Our Kindergarten Classroom News Important Info. & Dates: April 5th: Report cards go home April 7th: Family Nature Hike Day April 11th: ½ Day: CONFERENCES April 16th: Family Game Night (6:30-7:30) April 18th: ½ day – NO AFTERCARE April 19th – 28th: SPRING BREAK Here are some skills we will be working on throughout the month:

Literacy

Phonics: This month, we will wrap up short vowels, then begin learning about long vowels and their spelling patterns. Specifically, we will focus on studying long /a/, long /e/, and long /i/ this month. When discussing “long vowels” we emphasize that the vowel says its name. (ex: a-acorn-/a/, eeagle-/e/, etc. Here are some of the patterns we will discuss: • April 1st: short /u/ review • April 8th : Long /a/ patterns: a__e (lake), ai (sail), ay (say) • April 15th: Long /e/ patterns: ee (seen), ea (bean), e_e (here) • April 22nd: Long /i/ patterns: i__e (fine), igh (right), y (fly) • April 29th: SPRING BREAK Handwriting: We will continue to work on correctly writing all uppercase and lowercase letters. Our main focus while writing these letters is that they are on the writing lines in the correct place. We will really be looking for proper grasp of the pencil, and correct formation of the letters. You can help by making sure and reinforcing that your child is starting from left to right, and top to bottom when writing at home. Word Work: This month we will work on: *Identifying initial, final, and medial sounds in

words. Further segmenting words with multiple phonemes in order to better develop our inventive spelling This month we will learn our last 2 word families. After reviewing all the word families we have learned, we will move into lessons on digraphs. Digraphs are when two letters come together to make one sound. For example, sh says /sh/ like in ship. We will work on digraphs at the beginning, middle, and end of a word. • April 1st: -ell (bell, tell, fell) • April 8th: -ing (ring, sing, ding) • April 15th: REVIEW • April 22nd: SPRING BREAK • April 29th: /sh/ digraph Sight Words: This month we will continue to learn THREE sight words each week. Please make sure you are practicing sight words with your child as often as possible. Confidently knowing how to read and write these words will help your child tremendously as they continue to learn how to read and write independently. The sight words we will be focusing on this month are: April 1st: out, our, now April 8th: with, will, this April 15th:: came, say, they April 22st: SPRING BREAK April; 29th: under, pretty, this Writing: This month we will be working on writing poems. Here are some of the types of poems we will be working on: • Acrostic poems • Name poem • Rhyming poems

Comprehension Skills: To go along with our

poem unit, here are some comprehension skills that we will be working on while reading these poems:

Our Kindergarten Classroom News * rhyming *rhythm *fluency while reading *creating a “mental picture” Math: Here are the topics in math we will be learning about this month! • We will be learning all about shapes. First we will go over the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes. We will review the names of all shapes, and then discuss how many sides, vertices (corners), faces, and edges they have. • Then we will move into our topic on measurement. Throughout this unit we will learn about height, length, weight, and capacity. We will use hands on materials to experiment with all these different forms of measurement.

Science: This month, we will finish up our unit on plants. We will explore soil, plant adaptations, and observe the process of a growing plant. We will then jump into our animal unit. During this topic, we will learn about • The 5 different classifications of animals (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, insects). • Animal Habitats • Animal Adaptations Social Studies: This month, we will be talking about our Cooperation Shooting Star for Character Education. We will talk about how we can show cooperation at home and at school.
