GAS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
ALMA PROJECT
Project Profile The ALMA Observatory (Atacama Large Millimeter Array), located at 5000 meters altitude in the second region of Chile, near San Pedro de Atacama, evaluates the construction of a gas pipeline for feeding three combined generators at Operations Support Facility (OSF), which turns to supply power to ALMA and give electricity to their operations. The new pipeline will increase the autonomy and operational continuity of all activities and operations at OFS ALMA. ALMA OFS requires this new pipeline to avoid the risks of disruption of gas supplies, which currently is done by trucks. The risk increases by weather conditions during the summer rainy season (December to March), the continental winter (June to August) and also for any blockages in the paths. This could generate a run out of gas for the generators, suspending all operations of the observatory and threatening staff and facilities. The gasline will also reduce the impact caused by the constant flow of trucks at a nearby tourist destination named San Pedro de Atacama. The pipeline begins at EMR CESPA station at 2350 meters above sea level; the supply pressure at that point will be 70 bar (1015 psi). The gas pressure at the control station OFS ALMA, 2950 meters altitude, is 16 bar (232 psi). The pipeline will be a 3“ diameter Flexpipe and about 24.5 kilometers length.

The gas line begins at the measurement and control station located at 3.8 Km south from San Pedro de Atacama (EMR CESPA) and goes next to the 23-CH road up to the ALMA Access Control (9.5 Km), turning east and going up 15 Km until the OFS ALMA situated at 2.900 meters above sea level.

Pipeline Main Points
PK 0. CESPA CESPA (Cooperativa Eléctrica San Pedro de Atacama). Start point of the gas line to be connected to the main pipeline, named NorAndino.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 0. Connection Valve The arrangement has a 4” diameter pipe. After the valve, there is a reduction to 3”.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 8. Road Intersections The pipeline will run parallel to the 23-CH route at a distance of 10 m from the center of the road. The line has five rural road intersections, none of them is paved.

PK 9.3 ALMA Access Control During the rainy season this low point becomes a pond although there is no flood. The pipeline shall have concrete blocks for buoyancy control. The Regulation and Measuring Station (ERM, Spanish Initials) will be next to the Access Control Station and will reduce the pressure from 67 to 16 bar.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK9.3. Tunnel and Casing for crossing For crossing the CH23 route a tunnel liner about 27 m length shall be used.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 16 Deep Ravine Crossing A steel casing containing the gas line shall be anchored to the rock and also to the bridge. To provide an extra mechanical protection, a concrete coating shall cover the steel casing.
Pipeline Main Points
PK 17,4 Small Ravines There are three small ravines. The gas pipeline will be buried and shall be concrete coated.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 20.4 Protected Stone Monolites and archeological sites There are a few archeological sites along the route mostly between the ALMA gate and the OSF. The flexibility of the line allows to surround these sites.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 24 Heavy Truck Crossing There will be five road crossings inside ALMA facilities. Two of them are where the antennas are carried by trucks supporting a 200 ton load; in these crossings, a deeper trench shall be excavated and the Flexipipe shall be installed inside a casing and will be externally concrete coated.
Pipeline Main Points (cont.)
PK 24,5 Power Generators, end of Pipeline Close to the end point, the gas line shall cross a 23KV buried line and also a fiber optic cable.
