October 26, 2009 To NHS Members and Parents: RISD has structured a district-wide set of guidelines for extracurricular activities, specifically guidelines pertaining to alcohol and drug use. Each organization is held to the same set of guidelines, which are provided and also on the RISD website. The philosophy of National Honor Society is that students should represent themselves, NHS, and Berkner High School in an honorable and unquestionable manor. NHS is a privilege that select students are invited to join. Students must then maintain respectable conduct and character and meet academic and volunteer requirements in order to remain an NHS member. The district has put into place guidelines that not only NHS must adhere to, but also every extracurricular activity in the district. The guidelines are active as of 2008. You will find the guidelines attached; read through them with your student to ensure that everyone is clear of the consequences that will follow behavior out of accordance with the district guidelines. For example, if an NHS member is found to have dishonorable character and has broken the guidelines, they will be dismissed from NHS and will not be reinstated. Behind the district guidelines, you will also find an agreement form. This MUST be signed and returned to Ms. Tackett, E314, by Thursday, November 5th. Please do not return it during class. If it is not returned, the NHS member will become inactive, and will not be allowed to participate in NHS activities or graduate with NHS honors. This is NOT optional and the matter shall not be taken lightly.

Sincerely,

Kelly Tackett NHS Sponsor 469-593-7267
