AIAC – A Look Ahead Into 2012CE – Part I

Introduction I love movies. On Friday the 13 (November 2009), I watched the recent Hollywood movie titled 2012. The film has indeed remarkable cinematography and visual effects. Direction is also good. The message, although seemingly gloomy, was very direct and clear. I liked the film personally, as a film.

Then yesterday, I saw a documentary on History Channel on 2012. It seemed to me that this concept of Doomsday seems to really have made an impact on people’s mind. I was at a Chicago astrologers meet a few months ago, introducing the subject of lunar nodes. After my presentation and a brief Q&A session, I was asked what my opinion is on 2012 CE. I did speak briefly on my views on it but reserved most of my comments for later. I am sure most of my readers are familiar with the 2012 controversy. If not, then before reading this article I would request them to google 2012 and just get a brief introduction to the subject. Just an introduction is fine and then they can carry on reading the rest of the article, which is completely my personal view on the subject.

The Long Count ReRe-set If the Mayans would have had a 14.0.0.0.0 B'ak'tun in the past, I wouldn’t be writing this article neither would you have heard anything special about 2012 relating to end of anything (except Olympics). The fact is that the Mayans ended their long count cycle at the 13.0.0.0.0 B'ak'tun and began a new cycle from there.

Some astrologers have claimed that time is cyclic. I agree with this statement only 50%. If I have to give Time a 3-D shape it would surely be spiral of concentric circles (like a bed or a car spring). Something like below –

According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the K'iche' Maya of the Colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 14th b'ak'tun (i.e a new cycle begins after 13.0.0.0.0). The previous creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, followed by the start of the fourteenth (or new cycle) b'ak'tun, 13.0.0.0.0, on December 21, 2012. There is only one reference to the current creation's 13th b'ak'tun in the fragmentary Mayan corpus: Tortuguero Monument 6, part of a ruler's inscription. Thanks to the spiral nature of time, if we can visit the events that could have occurred in the last cycle of the Mayans, we can estimate the nature of events in 2012.

AIAC – A Look Ahead Into 2012CE – Part I

Thus we a date (or a date range) which if analyzed properly by cross-referencing other civilizations we can reach a conclusion about the kind of events which we can expect in 2012. We know from the Mesoamerican calendar that the present BIG cycle began on August 11, -3113. We also know from references in Popol Vuh that this was perhaps the forth cycle of creation.

The Hindu Connection Other Ancient civilizations also had references of four great cycles and one such reference is found in Ancient India. It is said that the present age (also called Kali Yuga) began on 18th February, 3102 BCE (or -3101). This date has a striking resemblance with the Mayan date of 11th August 3114 BCE (being only 12 years apart). In ancient India, this was the date of disappearance of Krishna from Earth and the day that city of Dwarka was submerged in the ocean. The sea-level rose and submerged huge land masses and lot of people died. It will be interesting to note if ancient India had an end date for Kali Yuga as well.

In Canto 12, shloka 2.24 in Srimad Bhagvatam we find such a reference. Back in 2004, I did some research on this and posted the date which satisfies the combination mentioned in the verse. The date is 26th /27th July 2014 CE. This date is surely a very close date to 21st Dec 2012 when dealing with such a huge range of time.

This date marks the end of the present age which started in 3102 BCE and would end on 2014 CE. I will continue my writings in the second part of the article.
