A day in life of Brahma How insignificant are we? Why this ego?
Life of Brahma
Scale of Time: Smallest to Biggest Unit of Time
A day in Life of Brahma: How big is Kaliyuga • Lets assume the smallest unit of time is Kaliyuga • One Mahayuga comprises 4 yugas viz. Satya, Treta, Dwapara and Kali in the ratio 4:3:2:1. Meaning Satya Yuga is 4 times as long as Kaliyuga. So in all, one Mahayuga is 10 times the duration of Kaliyuga • 4 Yugas = 1 Mahayuga = Life of Deva = 12,000 divine year = 4,320,000 human years • At the end of each Mahayuga there is very very very small and insignificant destruction • Kaliyuga = 1000 + 100 + 100 divine years = 1200 “Divine Years” • Life span of “Devas” is equal to 1 Mahayuga i.e. 10 Kaliyuga duration
A day in Life of Brahma: Manavantara and Sandhya
• Sandhya: Universe is partially re-created at the beginning and partially destroyed at the end. The duration of this creation and destruction is 2 kaliyuga duration each (4 in total) • Manvantara: In the middle of creation and destruction is the active part which lasts 710 Kaliyuga duration (71 Mahyuga) • Think of Sandhya as the “quick power nap time” for Brahma during his working day
A day in Life of Brahma: Manavantara and Sandhya • In one day of Brahma there are 14 Manvantara and 15 Sandhya which come in cycle one after another like phases – Try fitting 14 light and 15 dark strips in a line • Think of it like one day of Brahma has 14 “active” phases and 15 “non active” phase. Easy way to remember is thinking of this as a lunar month with some dark (amayasya) and some lit (Purnima) days. Just that dark and light phases are not equal in duration • Now the interesting fact is that duration of Manvantara and Sandhya is NOT equal. The ratio is 710:4 i.e. universe is active 710 times and not active 4 times • The 4 part in which it is not active is split into two equal halves – 2 parts for partial creation and other two half for partial destruction
A day in Life of Brahma: Manavantara and Sandhya • So in a day of Brahma there are 14 Manvantara and 15 Sandhya. Manvantara is 710 times the duration of Kaliyuga and Sandhya is 4 times the duration of Kaliyua 1 day of Brahma Manvantara Sandhya
Frequency Duration (In Kaliyuga Terms) Total 14 710 9940 15 4 60 Total 10000 Kaliyuga Duratioon
• Manvantara is “work time” and Sandhya is “quick power nap time” of Brahma (Crude analogy for easy understanding)
A day in Life of Brahma: Kalpa
• So in a day of Brahma there are 14 Manvantara and 15 Sandhya. • One day of Brahma is called “Kalpa” • So what happens next day? • Next day Brahma is sleeping after the hard work of the previous day • When he is sleeping the universe is Destroyed • When Brahma dies the universe is FULLY destroyed • So in all there are FOUR destruction Mini Destruction one after each MahaYuga Partial destruction after each Manvantara Destruction when Braham is sleeping FULL destruction when Brahma dies
How long does Brahma live • Brahma lives for 100 years • His 1 year has 12 months • His 1 month have 30 days • His 1 day is called kalpa • One kalpa is as long as 10,000 kaliyuga duration of 1000 mahayuga duration • FUN FACT: Life of Brahma is just one breath of Vishnu! • Are you baffled? GOOD! You just realized how insignificant you are on the scale of time!
How Big is the “known” universe? • Now that we know how insignificant we are on the scale of time, it may be a good idea to see how insignificant we are in space

Where are we in Time • Brahma lives 100 years and we are in the 51st year • We are in the first day of Brahma’s 51st year i.e. Brahma just had his 50th birthday yesterday • Within that we are in the mid day (7th Manvantara) • In that Manvantara we are in the 28th cycle (We know there are 71 cycle in each Manavantara) • Within this Manavantara we are in the 5000th year of 432,000 long kaliyuga • Krishna just came 5000 years back LUCKY US! Krishna is our contemporary!
