Welcome
Methane gas Methane gas is prepared by heating sodium acetate with soda – lime (soda-lime is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide). The chemical equation of the reaction Involved in the preparation of methane is: CH3 COONa + NaOH CH4 + Na2 CO3 Sodium acetate
Sodium hydrox ide carbonate Methane (From soda-lime)
Sodium
The apparatus required for the laboratory preparation of methane is shown below:-
A mixture of sodium acetate and soda- lime is taken in a hard glass boiling tube. The boiling tube is heated , first gently and then strongly. On heating, methane gas is evolved which is collected over water( by the downward displacement of water). Since methane gas is collected over water , it shows that methane is insoluble in water.
