JOB TITLE:

MAJOR CRIME SUPPORT OFFICER

GRADE:

SCALE 6

REPORTS TO:

DI PPU

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

NONE

MAIN PURPOSE FOR THE ROLE: Under the direction of the Senior Investigating Officer and Deputy Senior Investigating Officer, ensure the efficient and effective conduct of investigations of institutional child abuse. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: •

Investigation of child abuse enquiries involving physical and sexual cruelty and neglect.



Interviewing of victims of abuse and obtaining Criminal Justice Act witness statements with due sensitivity and confidentiality.



Collect, handle and maintain continuity of exhibits.



Assist in the preparation of files for evidence for CPS.



Liaise with Local Authority (Social Workers) and other agencies.



Provide initial support for victims and families during the enquiry and highlight concerns to the Victim Liaison Officer.



Introduction of victims to court proceedings and provide support to them during their court appearances.



Maintain safe working practices for self and others in accordance with the Avon and Somerset Police statement of Policy on Health and Safety at work.



Update records in respect of victim care and other aspects of the Operation.



Compile written reports and statements as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: The post holder must be computer literate and have experience of interviewing of an investigative nature (e.g. PEACE interviewing techniques). Previous experience of writing statements would be an advantage. The post holder should ideally hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel around the force area using alternative transport.
