Would + have+ past participle (conditional perfect)

The third conditional Si usa per indicare ciò che sarebbe potuto accadere se si fossero realizzate determinate condizioni / is used to express what might have happen if cetain conditions would have realized:

Se non avessi fatto tardi saremmo arrivati in tempo. If you hadn’t been late, we would have arrived on time. Se non avessi perso il treno, non avrei conosciuto Carmen. If I hadn’t missed the train, I wouldn’t have met Carmen. •

Invece di would have possiamo usare could have(per indicare abilità), might have(per indicare possibilità), should have(per dare un consiglio)/ instead of would have we can use could have(ability), might have(possibilità), should have(advice):

Se tu avessi studiato, avresti potuto passare l’esame. If you had studied, you could have passed the exam. Se avessi avuto i soldi, avrei potuto comprarlo. If I had had the money, I might have bought it. •

In alcuni casi potrebbe presentarsi una combinazione mista di tempi /in some cases we might use mixed tenses:

Se tu non fossi così pigro, avresti potuto passare l’esame. If you weren’t so lazy, you would have passed the exam. Se lei non fosse uscita con quel freddo, oggi non sarebbe ammalata. If she hadn’t gone out in that cold weather, she wouldn’t be ill today.
