If you discover he’s reading a book about Bertrand Russell, that makes you think he’s educated, he’s curious, he’s therefore productive – all that the mind builds on little pieces of information available in one’s Facebook profile – you are likely to be the next victim of morphing or false image building on the internet. Especially, in a time when you’re less likely to pair yourself with someone you’ve known since childhood, you depend more on social networking that comes handy in expanding your horizon. Such activity, as appealing as it might, does not necessarily lead to the most satisfying of conclusions or end in what one is constantly conjuring up. A social network is a structure of nodes, which are generally individuals or organizations, and tied by one or more specific common interests such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, sexual relations or otherwise. In the internet, these structures (most often very complex and deceptive) offer the platform for combining likeminded people and getting souls closer for happiness that they only perceive, but are scarcely attainable. This path to happiness is too risky as many land up in a deep soup because their profiles say a lot about them – perhaps too much. As Northeasterners, we are more prone to such dangers because our simplicity leads us into trusting people. TNT worked on this particular sector where dangers often involve online predators or individuals who claim to be that which they are not. Danger, also, does exist with networking in the real world and caution has to be maintained in either case. Just like you’re advised when meeting strangers at a bar, school, or work – you are also advised to proceed with caution online. By being aware of your surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn’t feel right. Once you’ve convinced yourself that you are sufficiently informed, you can begin to search for networking communities to join – be it MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut or Classmates. Broaden your horizon but do so without compromising your safety. Cya.
