I trust you are well rested, refreshed and ready for T erm 2. During the holidays several changes have been made around the school. We now have a set of paving blocks leading from the Manuka Street entrance across to R13 The steps from the bottom field up to the adventure playground have been enhanced and one does not have to be a giant to use them! Handrails have been installed on the Renwick House steps (west side) and outside R12 to make it easier for the visually impaired to get around the school Yellow markings have also been painted on various steps and ramps to make it easier for the visually impaired to get around the school The walls on the south side of Room 10 have been painted A divider has been installed between Rooms 16 & 17

Cambodian Orphanage You may remember that last year the student council organised a collection of books to help children at CCH orphanage in Cambodia set up a library. Altoget her 270 books wer e donated, a fabulous result. However, we have not yet been able to find anyone able to help us transport the books to Phnom Penh. If are able to help, or know someone who coul d, please contact Tracy in Room 11.

40 hour Famine The weekend of May 22-24 is when young people all over New Zealand will be going without a meal, technology, electricity or even speaking to help raise money for World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine. Anyone wanting to take part will be issued with a sponsor book once they have returned their parental consent for m to Tracy in Room 11. Remember “Citizenship is Everyone’s Business”

THE ZERO WASTE CHALLENGE FOR NELSON AND TASMAN SCHOOLS This term we will be revitalising our school's “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE” policy and will be focusing on reducing the amount of plastic packaging in our lunchboxes.

We will be making a 'plastic lunchwrap ball' out of lunch wrappings at the start of the challenge and another one a t the end to see what reduc tion we can achieve. First we will measure the waste in week 1, then af ter ac tively REDUCing waste over the nex t few weeks we will re-measure it in week 4.

So instead of buying plastic wrap try lunch paper which can be composted at home.

Your child has received order forms for Scholastic Books. Orders can be placed a t the school up u ntil Tuesday 19th M ay. Please fill in the forms (name & room number is importan t). Include the correct amount of change and place everything in a sealed envelope. Place this in the box provided in the sc hool office. Cheques must be made ou t to Nelson Cen tral School or Scholastic NZ Ltd. If they are not then your order will not be able to be processed and will be returned to you.
