Interhigh Athletics Carnival Reece High School sent a team of 50 students to represent the school at this year’s Interhigh Athletics Carnival at Penguin Athletics Centre. Performances throughout the day by our students were absolutely outstanding and provided one of the best results for the school for a number of years. There were numerous highlights during the day, whether it be individual or team performance of students stepping up to different events due to injury or illness of others. The effort of our Grade 8 boy’s team must be mentioned. These boys placed first in 17 of 21 events - an absolutely outstanding effort. Out of the group, Ryan Wilson was named grade 8 boys champion - well done. Also, Luke Smith took out the joint grade 10 champion - a huge effort. The following students were winners in division one at the carnivalGrade 7Luke Bowerman- Long jump Rebecca Howe- 1500m Grade 8Dylan Meldrum- 800m, 1500m Hamish Bound- 400m Ryan Wilson- 100m, 200m, long jump, triple jump, shot putt Boys relay team Trisha Peper- Long jump Cody Brown- Discus Grade 9Ward Rakei- Triple jump Olivia Nugent- Discus Grade 10Trent Coleman- Triple jump Luke Smith- Shot putt, discus, javelin

THE SALE OR SUPPLY OF ALCOHOL TO YOUTHS (POLICE OFFENCES ACT 1935) LEGISLATION The Tasmanian Government enacted legislation to regulate the supply of alcohol to people under the age of 18 years, on private property. This legislation will be proclaimed on the 12 November 2009, and will be enforced from that date. The aim of this legislation is to support a more responsible approach by parents, guardians and other adults with parental rights, who choose to supply young people with alcohol. I am seeking the assistance of the Department of Education in raising awareness of this legislation within the Tasmanian community. A PDF of the Youth and Alcohol brochure, explaining the new legislation is attached. Your assistance is requested in distributing this information within your school community and via email communication networks. To date, legislation in Tasmania has regulated the sale of alcohol to minors and the consumption of alcohol in public places, but there has been no regulation around the supply of alcohol to minors on private property. The Sale or Supply of Alcohol to Youths legislation places the onus on responsible adults to give, or obtain permission for a youth to be supplied with alcohol on private property, and to ensure that the supply is undertaken in a responsible manner. Under this legislation, a failure to act responsibly may incur financial penalties of up to $12,000 or, in the case of more serious offences, a term of imprisonment. The potential harms to young people from alcohol are considerable and the penalties that may be incurred reflect the seriousness with which the Tasmanian Government and community views this issue. The current National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol advocate that there is no safe level of consumption of alcohol for anyone under 18 years. Tasmania Police anticipates that this important legislation will ultimately assist in protecting young people from the harms associated with alcohol consumption, and your support in raising community awareness greatly appreciated. If you require further information about the Sale or Supply of Alcohol to Youths legislation, or wish to obtain additional brochures or posters please contact Executive Support on 03 6230 2600, or via email ([email protected]). Yours sincerely

Darren Hine Acting Commissioner of Police
