CAN YOU MENTION NOUNS THAT DON’T TAKE ARTICLE? • Articles are A,An, The - a and an come with countable nouns, the comes with particular definite thing only • When you are talking about something in general, not a particular thing - use a noun without an article. You can also use plural nouns without an article. • Frogs are my favorite animals. • Children like playing games. • Babies cry a lot. • Glasses are things that you wear to correct your eyesight. • Birds are animals that can fly. • People enjoy watching television.

Abstract nouns don’t take A/ An. Thouse nouns that are not countable cannot take a / an. Nouns that don't show quantity are normally used without a or an. The article the, however, may be used with nouns that don't show quantity. Don’t use articles with commodities. I like sunshine. I sometimes have fruit for breakfast. You’ve got dirt on your face. A clock measures time. Put sugar in your tea to make it sweet. I need time to think of a new plan. Would you pass me the salt, please. (particular salt) Can I borrow the paint when you’ve finished? (particular paint)

Use of this – that – these – those • We use this and these to talk about things and people that are near. We use that and those for things which are far from us. This and that are used for singular, these and those are used for plurals. • Use this with singular nouns. • Who lives in this house? • This car belongs to my mom. • Does this key fit the lock? • This book is my favorite. • Who gave you this money? • This cheese tastes funny.

What is wrong with : every boys have come? • Correct sentence is : every boy has come. • Rule: Some quantifying determiners can only be used with singular nouns. They are another, every and each. • I need another pencil. • He likes every child in the class. • Each house is painted a different color.

Which is right: are there any boys? Or is there any boy? Both are right. With some determiners, we can use singular and plural both. These are any, no, no other and the other. • Any dog will bite if it’s afraid. • Are there any good books in the library? • There wasn’t any space in the cupboard. • No child likes getting hurt. • There were no pencils in the drawer. • We’ve done no work today. • There is no other way of solving the problem. • She has no other friends. • We have no other food in the refrigerator. • Do you like this picture or the other picture? • The other boys laughed at him. • I like the other music better.
