May Day celebrations. Helsinki is one big
party town on the evening before May Day and the following morning. “Vappu” marks the true arrival of spring, and the streets are filled with a real carnival atmosphere. At 6pm on the last day of April students give the Havis Amanda statue a wash and present her with a student hat. The celebrations continue through the night and into the next morning, when people gather in the city’s parks at Kaivopuisto, Ullanlinnanmäki and Kaisaniemi for a picnic brunch and more champagne!
