Nelson Central School We e kl y N e ws l e tt e r

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu – Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Welcome to T erm 3 – I trust everyone has had an enjoyable break and that you managed to avoid Swine Flu where ever you were! If you are a family new to the school – a special welcome to you; we hope you enjoy your time with us. We currently have two student teachers in our school – Kiri Paterson is in Room 13 with Helen Zachariassen and Nina Foster is in Room 9 with Rachel Boyd. Next week we will welcome Alison Slee to our school. Alison brings a wealth of experience with her; she has taught in Canterbury schools and schools in other parts of New Zealand. Alison has taught at all levels of the school and has also taught in schools overseas. Alison will be opening the next classroom for 5–year–old children in Renwick 1.

flu–like symptoms should stay at home until they are well and are no longer coughing or sneezing. For the vast majority of people this will be a mild to moderate illness, however it can be severe for some. If symptoms become worse, people should seek medical advice from their GP or phone Healthline on 0800 611116 . Says Dr McGrath "This is usually three to four days from the start of symptoms, but it could be up to a week. Staying away from other people when you are sick will help slow the spread of the virus in the community and allow both schools and health services to better manage the impact of the flu pandemic." "This is an opportunity for students and teachers to remind themselves that personal hygiene is really important in reducing the chances of getting pandemic influenza, or passing it on to others. Simple measures can make a huge difference, so remember to cover coughs and sneezes and wash and dry your hands frequently."

On a rather chilly Monday afternooon in the holidays an energetic band of helpers arrived armed with shovels, brooms, buckets and wheelbarrows. Their challenge was to move 4 cubic metres of sand from the driveway between Room 11 and Room 10 into the junior sandpit. What an a mazing tea m we all made and after just one hour the sand was all shifted and we were rewarded with a refreshing juicy. Well done everyone and a big thankyou to the School Community Group for making this happen! And many thanks also to Foothold Developments for their great job on the roof.
