Welcome to the July newsletter, as promised virtually on time! June was another busy month for the club and it had an international flavour with our good friends Richard H72 and Ron H66 over from the Netherlands. The month started with a Chris Crewe #15 final win at Nelson using a borrowed Ant Dewhurst #80 car. This caused some debate as Matthew Fenton #90 has also been staking a claim for this car. Strides, was up next and it was rare visitor Maff Shaft #11 who came away with a heat and final double. Matthew Smith #14 was starting to hit form and he took heat and final at the following Nelson. More impressively he went on to win the Nelson qualifier later in the month and was upgraded to blue. Martyn Chaffer #31 made his tri-oval debut and took an instant liking to it by taking the final. The tri-oval was the last meeting for Richard and Ron and they were in determined mood with Richard taking a heat second to qualify for his first final. Ron followed that by winning the consolation and in the GN it was a Cloggie’s 1-2 with Ron taking the win! Unfortunately the next Stride’s was cancelled due to low car numbers. Please try and support ALL the club tracks whenever possible. The final meeting of the grading period saw another debut final winner, well done to Mickey Smith #17. The points shake up after all that sees Ant well ahead at the top of the points with a hundred point + lead. Lee Fairhurst #18 is catching Chris Crewe and that could develop into a good battle during July. Les Cotton #60 and Maff Shaft #11 both regain red after scoring well in June and finally Stephen Chadderton #13 regains a blue roof. After round 10 of the RMSCC Championship qualifiers, Dan Rogers #29 still leads from Lee Fairhurst #18 with Chris Hodgson #19 third and Ant Dewhurst #80 4th. With dropped scores very much in play, there could be some major changes yet throughout the grid. Away from RMSCC but on the Brisca ovals, Jon Radcliffe made his debut in the F1 heritage class, Chris Crewe was out at Skegness and recorded 4 finishes. Lee Fairhurst continues to impress in the F1’s with a GN at Cowdenbeath from blue top and starts July as a red top. July sees 2 qualifiers for the RMSCC championship and a W&Y round at Blackley. It also is a major month for Brisca, with the Skegness speedweekend featuring many RMSCC members and the European Championship at Northampton.

This month’s driver profile is Maff Shaft #11 in recognition of his rise to red grade

Q: How and when did you first start racing? May 2007 at a Blackley speedweekend, after an invitation from Dan #29 Q: how quickly did you get the hang of it? I got the hang of it after a few meetings, after winning a few races and gaining confidence.

Q: Which track do you go best on? The main track at Blackley, I hardly miss finals there recently. Q: What has been your best achievement at RMSCC? Winning Blackley track championship, Summer 2008. Q: What were your first impressions of Chaddy? Hilarious, seen as though the first thing I heard out of him was him singing.. “I shot the sheriff, and he shot me back” Q: Who do you like to race against? There are a few people who I enjoy racing with. Ian #79 as we started at similar times, and have a bit of rivalry that way. Graham #98 races purely for fun and you get just what you give. Dan #29 same reasons as his dad. But as long as they race fair, then anyone. Q: What grade do you aim for? As high as I can, but I’m not too fussed where I end up I just race for fun. That’s how it’s meant to be. Q: Finally, if you could change anything about the club, what would it be? Its pretty much spot on, a few more racers wouldn’t hurt. I’d also like to see more available for lower graders to ‘Compete’ for, it’s an incentive to stick with the racing. Short tracks are popular with people who struggle at nelson.
