“Sharing a common thread!” Board Meeting The next board meeting will be Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

Harriet Hargrave is coming June 9th! Harriet Hargrave will be our speaker on June 9th presenting her machine quilting trunk show. Harriet Hargrave wrote the "bible" of machine quilting, Heirloom Machine Quilting.. She is also well known for her books Mastering Machine Appliqué and From Fiber to Fabric which is the quilters definitive book on textiles and their care and keeping. Harriet is the owner of Harriet’s Treadle Arts in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and works with Hobbs Bonded Fibers to develop new quilt batts. The June meeting & workshops will be held at the Ankeny Baptist Church. Harriet Hargrave will also teach two workshops. On Tuesday, June 9th, the workshop is called “Quilt as Desired” and is a round table discussion. There will be no actual sewing. Time will be used to discuss batting choices, quilt top preparation, and any problems that come up as we look at ideas for quilting and finishing your quilt tops. Wednesday, June 10th, is an invisible machine applique class. The latest products will be covered, as well as tried and true methods for achieving perfect appliqué by machine. Mock Hand appliqué techniques will give a hand appliqué appearance, and is Harriet's "instant gratification" technique. Perfect satin stitch is another option. Each class cost $40 for guild members & $45 for non-members. Contact Linda Northwick, 9645594, for additional details. Our June 9th guild meeting will include this year's

“Bash Your Stash” Presidents Challenge. Rules of the challenge include all fabric must come from your stash, no purchased fabric, not even for the back. The only purchased item is to be batting. The majority of the quilt/quilts must be strips and it must be made this guild year.

Presidents Letter I just saw a cute sign last night that said "Spring is time for seeds, Summer is time for weeds", unfortunately at my house both seasons seem to be times for weeding. Then there are the nice rainy days for sewing! REMEMBER!!! June's meeting is at Ankeny Baptist Church, 2842 Sw Third St, please come to the lower level door. If you did not get a map last month there will be some in the lobby of Holy Trinity. There is also a small map on page 4 of this newsletter. June is the month for our President's Challenge. If you have a challenge quilt I will have you take it to a room and when the time comes I will have you bring them out. Some will be too big for sacks so we will just have to be honest about which quilt you think fit the rules and you like the best, instead of --my friend is holding that one so I will vote on it. I do not want to take up too much of Harriet's time so we will try to keep it quick. I heard several of you have quilts for this challenge, I can't wait to see them. The quilt show is a little more than a month away!! Yikes, remember sell those raffle ticket and sew those country store items. Because nice matters Debbie Pierschbacher President

Call for a free estimate. Help Tip – Birdnesting

Quilts in the Garden submitted by Cecilie Vogt

from The Quilt Block Newsletter No, not the nests made by robins or house finches but the thread nests on the reverse side of our machine embroidery. Birdnesting is almost always a threading problem. We know that sounds way too simple but it's true. One way to solve the problem is to always thread the machine with the presser foot lever UP. This allows the thread to position itself properly in the tension dial. Threading the machine with the presser foot DOWN closes the tension discs pulling the thread to the underneath side and creating a not so pretty thread nest on the underneath side when we begin to stitch. Try this tip for happy stitching!

Are you looking for that quick project to make? Maybe you'd like to make one more donation quilt in a hurry—or you're still trying to finish up a graduation gift. Here is a tried and true pattern that goes together fast and looks good too! It's a great project for a beginning quilter. This FAST AND EASY pattern makes a crib, twin or larger size easily just by adding more rows. You can add several borders to it also.

Directions for the FAST AND EASY quilt: This quilt calls for a main fabric, two contrasting fabrics for the 4-patch squares, and fabric for borders & binding. Cut the main fabric into 10 1/2” blocks that will finish at 10 inches. Cut 12 squares for a crib size quilt (will need about a yard of fabric) or cut 20 blocks of the main fabric for the twin size quilt ( you'll need about 1 ! yards for twin size). You'll need two contrasting fabrics for the smaller squares. The contrasting fabric blocks should be cut into 5 ! squares and sewn together to make a 4-patch block. The 4-patch block will measure 10 1/2” when put together and will be a 10” finished block. For strip piecing, cut 5 1/2" strips, and sew contrasting strips together. Sub-cut the strip pairs into 5 1/2" slices, then take 2 slices and make the 4 patch block sets as above. You'll need about ! yard of each contrasting fabric for the crib quilt and 1 yard of each for the twin size. Finish the quilt with as many borders as you would like, a one inch finished inside border looks nice (cut 1 1/2” strips). Then add an outer border, 3 inches wide for a crib quilt or 4 inches wide for a twin quilt. You'll need about 1/2-1 yard of fabric for binding depending on the size of the quilt. Try making this with a “layer cake” and two charm packs and have the squares finish at 9 1/2”. The layout for the CRIB quilt is 6 blocks down and 4 blocks across

You can fussy cut the fabric to feature special prints in the large block.

The layout for the TWIN quilt is

8 blocks down and 5 blocks across
