HYMN All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good: His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the Angel-host Be praise and glory evermore. William Kethe, d 1594
THE WELCOME We meet here today to give thanks to God for the lives of those lost at sea. We remember with affection all those who have no known grave but the sea. We pray for their families and friends. We pledge ourselves to work for greater safety in all seafaring and to support all who work to save and preserve human life. We thank God for the work of the Maritime Foundation and for all who have given so generously of their time and effort in founding the Record Book kept within this church. We keep silence and thank God for his creation and many blessings. 3

HYMN Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same for ever, Slow to chide, and swift to bless. Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him; Dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace. H.F. Lyte, 1793-1847

THE PRAYERS Led by John Holland CBE JP DL Past Chairman of the Maritime Volunteer Service A Prayer for the Departed A Prayer for Seafarers A Prayer for the Work of the Maritime Foundation and the Maritime Volunteer Service
THE LORD'S PRAYER THE GRACE A REFLECTION Led by The Rev'd Bertrand Olivier Vicar of All Hallows by the Tower to be followed by a short Organ Meditation: Prelude on St. Columba - C.V. Stanford A procession forms and moves to the front of the Nave during the singing of the following hymn
HYMN Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; be thou my best thought in the day and the night, both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light. 5
Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, be thou ever with me, and I with thee Lord; be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; be thou my soul's shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise: be thou mine inheritance now and always; be thou and thou only the first in my heart; O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, thou heaven's bright sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won; great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. Irish, c 8th century; trans. Mary Byrne, 1880-1931 versified Eleanor Hull, 1860-1935
THE ACT OF COMMEMORATION We give thanks for all those whose names are recorded in this Memorial Book. We keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds, and pledge to work for a more peaceful world. Amen A sheaf of flowers is laid by the Memorial Book. The procession returns to the pews. During the following hymn there will be a collection for the work of The Maritime Foundation and the Maritime Volunteer Service. All stand

HYMN Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Saviour, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O sacred Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, Who bad’st its angry tumult cease, And gavest light and life and peace O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso’er they go: And ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea William Whiting, 1825-78 tune: MELITA - J.B. Dykes, 1823-76
THE BLESSING You are requested to sign the Visitor’s Book which will be at the North Porch entrance of the Church. The Service next year will be held on Thursday 14th October 2010. 7
“For those in peril on the Sea” Over the centuries in both peace and war many men, women and children have died at sea. Most have no known grave or permanent memorial of their passing. The Memorial Book provides, without regard to creed or nationality, a memorial to loved ones who have died at sea so tragically and, where possible, records the circumstances. If you have a relative or friend who died in such circumstances, however long ago, and you would like to enter his or her name in the Memorial Book, please ask for an entry form. If there are any difficulties in completing the form, our historian will be pleased to help. A Thanksgiving Service is held each year for the families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. Details of the Service are announced in the press, and invitations are sent to the families and friends of those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel of All Hallows by the Tower Church on Tower Hill near the Pool of London. This is the central church of Toc H and has long been connected with the sea. A charge of £45 is made for placing each name in the Memorial Book. A handdrawn facsimile extract of the entry, suitable for mounting and framing, is also provided. Any surplus arising after costs have been met will be used by the Maritime Foundation for education and training equipment to reduce accidents and loss of life at sea.
