The Desmond Wettern Fleet Award honouring the HM ship, submarine, Naval Air Squadron or Royal Marine Unit that has best contributed to a positive image of the RN during the year. Sponsored, and nominated by RN Fleet Media.
Desmond Wettern, on the bridge of HMS Battleaxe in 1981. A celebrated writer on maritime affairs for over 30 years, he was also the Daily Telegraph’s naval correspondent. In 1993 the Royal Navy established the Desmond Wettern Fleet Award in his memory. The Maritime Foundation, of which he was a founder member, created the Desmond Wettern Media Award to commemorate his dedication to the belief that the United Kingdom’s economic wellbeing and security are inextricably bound up with the sea.
The Countess Mountbatten of Burma CBE CD JP, the Maritime Foundation’s president with Anthony Harvey, its secretary.
Against the background of a Cold War still at its peak and the looming Falkland conflict, there was a feeling amongst mariners that if no action were taken to protect Britain’s maritime industries, there would be little left of the Royal Navy, the British Merchant Marine or the fishing fleets and their supporting infrastructure by the end of the century. This concern was highlighted by a reversal in government policy towards the maritime industries and the absence of a powerful political voice to coordinate a major campaign. In consequence, it led senior retired naval officers, leading shipowners and prominent City figures in the maritime field to form the Maritime Foundation. The Maritime Foundation promotes Britain’s interests across the entire maritime sector. Its purpose is to inform and raise public and parliamentary awareness of the importance of Britain’s maritime industries, commerce and defence through education, training and research. It has published a wide range of reports on the need for a coherent maritime policy, including major studies on the British merchant fleet and its linkages, defence matters, the UK maritime skills base and their contribution to the nation’s economy. In addition, the Foundation was instrumental in setting up the Parliamentary Maritime Group, comprising members of all parties from both Houses, as a body through which Parliament could be kept informed of Britain’s maritime affairs.
