Hymn Dear Lord and Father of mankind Forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise, In deeper reverence praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them without a word Rise up and follow thee, Rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee The silence of eternity, Interpreted by love! Interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace, The beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm! O still small voice of calm! John Whittier, 1807-1892

The Welcome We meet here today to give thanks to God for the lives of those lost at sea. We remember with affection all those who have no grave but the sea. We pray for their families and friends. We pledge ourselves to work for greater safety in all seafaring and to support all who work to save and preserve human life. We thank God for the work of the British Maritime Charitable Foundation and for all who have given so generously of their time and effort in founding the Record Book kept within this church. We keep silence and thank God for his creation and many blessings.

Hymn Glorious things of thee are spoken, Sion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for his own abode: On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou may’st smile at all thy foes. See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear of want remove: Who can faint, while such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace, which like the Lord the giver, Never fails from age to age. 4
Saviour, if of Sion’s city I through grace a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name: Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, All his boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Sion’s children know. words: John Newton (1725-1807) tune: ABBOTS LEIGH - Cyril Taylor b1907

The Lord’s Prayer The Grace A procession forms and moves to the Mariner’s Chapel during the singing of the following hymn 5
Hymn Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won; Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, Kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; Let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting: No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife; Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above: words: Edmund Budry, 1854-1932 tr. Richard Hoyle, 1875-1939 tune: Maccabeus
The Act Of Commemoration We give thanks for all those whose names are recorded in this Memorial Book. We keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds, and pledge to work for a more peaceful world. Amen A sheaf of flowers is laid by the Memorial Book The procession returns to the nave During the following hymn there will be a collection for the work of The British Maritime Charitable Foundation and the Maritime Volunteer Service. Hymn Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Saviour, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O sacred Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, Who bad’st its angry tumult cease, And gavest light and life and peace O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso’er they go: And ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea William Whiting 1825-1878
The Blessing You are requested to sign the Visitor’s Book which will be at the North Porch entrance at the Church The Service next year will be on 16th October 2008

“For those in peril on the Sea” Over the centuries in both peace and war many men, women and children have died at sea. Most have no known grave or permanent memorial of their passing. The Memorial Book provides without regard to creed or nationality, a memorial to loved ones who have died at sea so tragically and, where possible, records the circumstances. If you have a relative or friend who died in such circumstances, however long ago, and you would like to enter his or her name in the Memorial Book, please ask for an entry form. If there are any difficulties in completing the form our historian will be pleased to help. A Thanksgiving Service is held each year for the families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. Each year details of the Service are announced in the press and invitations are sent to the families and friends of those who have been entered in the Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel of All Hallows Church on Tower Hill near the Pool of London. This is the central church of Toc H and has long been connected with the sea. A charge of £45 is made for placing each name in the Memorial Book. A handdrawn facsimile extract of the entry, suitable for mounting and framing is also provided. Any surplus arising after costs have been met will be used by the British Maritime Charitable Foundation for education and training equipment to reduce accidents and loss of life at sea.
