Zoey, our 2009 Dog Park Mascot

About Zoey:

Congratulations to Zoey, the new Top Dog Mascot of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). Zoey and her owner, Chelsea Barnes, have received an amazing prize package including a free annual Gold Pass, an official mascot collar and leash, and a personal photo shoot! Zoey, a Collie and Golden Retriever mix, will make official appearances at our Dog Day Afternoon, Yappy Hour, and Pet Fest events and will help with their promotion. Zoey’s amazing story was instrumental in choosing her as our Top Dog Mascot. As a puppy, she lived in a puppy mill where she protected other dogs from abuse. Fortunately, Zoey was rescued by animal control. She came to Chelsea’s household as a foster dog and is now a permanent member of the family. Her bravery and loving nature are inspirational. Competition was fierce for the Top-Dog Mascot Contest. It kicked off on March 28 at Pet Fest 2009 at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mt. Pleasant. By the application deadline of April 30, 2009, 47 applications had been received, which were then narrowed down to seven finalists. Owner testimonials on Top Dog Mascot applications played a large role in determining our finalists. Interviews with the finalists and their owners took place at Dolittle’s on June 6. Dogs were judged on their friendliness, personality and temperament, obedience to owner’s command, and “star quality”!

From our Feature Customer Photo Winner for December 2009, Terri Kutz

I would first want to say how beautiful your James Island County Park is, how wonderful and polite your staff is, the great amenities your park offers and how much we enjoyed staying with you during our family’s weekend camping trip this past July. My family and I really enjoyed our stay there and look forward to returning soon, in fact we are looking at spending our week long family Christmas camping trip there this year. I took so many wonderful photos of the breathtaking natural beauty there at James Island County Park. I would like to share a photo that was hard to pick because there were so many beautiful photos, but this one just stood out to me the most and says to me, ”This is beauty… this is James Island”. This photo is for everyone to enjoy the peace and natural beauty I saw through my camera lens that quiet summer evening in the marsh of James Island County Park at sunset. Thank you again for allowing us to enjoy your park and hope to see everyone again soon.
