This is a fund raiser to help the Troop with the expenses for their summer activities. They just returned from a 5 day, 100 mile Canoe trip down the Suwannee river and also, a week long Summer Camp at Camp Thunder near Warm Springs ,Georgia. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

It is with great sadness that I witnessed the resignation Tuesday night of Police Officer John Uppole. The "City Council" voted 3-2 to ask him to resign his employment in the town of Barwick. It is a Great Loss for the citizens of Barwick. This man had sacrificed alot to come and protect us in Barwick. We weren't even allowed to hear the reason why they let him go. There was an overwhelming majority that wanted to keep him our Chief of Police, yet just a 3-2 vote let him go. All I can say is we will never feel as safe as we did when Office John Uppole was employed. Sometimes I'd hear a police siren in the middle of the night and smile cause I knew I'll sleep better knowing he is watching over out town. To Officer John Uppole: know that our town apparently didn't deserve an honest, dependable, hardworking and trustworthy person as yourself. Our prayers are with you now and always. Let me tell you a story, about a man that came to Barwick to help the citizens police their streets. He was hired with his faithful companion Eagle to help him, a resourceful canine able to sniff drugs and your basic bad guys. He was a man of many years of experience in law enforcement handling dogs and enforcing laws of the community he worked in. He was vetted by the City Council and hired with "the dog." A dog also fully trained, in other words another police officer with four feet. . He left a full time job with another city to take on the challenge of Barwick, a town of approximately 500 citizens, not a big, but, a steady challenge. He was given a probationary period in which to prove his mettle. During this time he used Eagle to apprehend and deter criminals in their merry endeavors, he met almost all the citizens of Barwick, black, white , latino, biker, trucker, everyone, people said he was doing a great job, but, that dog, why do we need a dog? Well, folks, herein lays the problem, you see we have a council that does not know how to stand up to the citizens, who, after the fact, came and complained about a decision their council made and demanded it be reversed. Not a large group of citizens, but, just “the right ones”, who know what is best for Barwick. Our police officer also was given the right to drive home his patrol car, a normal practice in any police department. Again, these "special citizens" questioned why he was wasting gas driving to and from his home, he could just leave the car parked in front of city hall. It was evident that he was doing his job, when, during municipal court held on Wednesday the 10th of June the fees and fines levied amounted close to $1000.00. The day prior to court our council held a special called meeting to discuss personnel, namely our police officer who, it seems was asking the citizens to help him keep the dog on duty and help him keep his job. Well, the citizens responded with a packed city hall all in favor of the officer, the likes have not been seen in Barwick for many years. Only three members of the council were present and a decision had to be carried over until the regular scheduled council meeting on Tuesday the 16th of June. Again a packed city hall standing room only, all in favor of keeping our police officer . He was willing to leave the dog at home, park the car in front of city hall, extend his probationary period and other concessions, all to keep his job, save the city money and maintain continuity in Barwick. One citizen stood up during the special called meeting and stated "I have lived in Barwick for 17 months and in that time period we have had 4 police officers, what is wrong with this picture?" Well, reader, our police officer was asked to resign, without giving him a reason, against the will of the citizens of the town he was sworn to protect. Now the patrol car sits in front of city hall, Eagle has some time off, and the City of Barwick is once again without police protection. This process of finding a good, willing police officer to work in Barwick will surely be repeated if the same people are allowed to continue to make the same decision (the council). Perhaps this November the voters of Barwick will make a change and elect council members that will listen to the wishes of the citizens of Barwick. The Editor (Views in favor or opposed are welcome)

RECIPE OF THE WEEK TEX-MEX SUMMER SQUASH CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS:

2 1/4 pounds summer squash, quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced crosswise (about 10 cups) 2/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion 1 4-ounce can chopped green chiles 1 4-1/2-ounce can chopped jalapenos (about 1/2 cup), drained 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 2 1/4 cups grated extra-sharp cheddar cheese (about 7 ounces), divided 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup mild salsa 4 scallions, thinly sliced, for garnish 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion for garnish

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Combine squash, onion, chiles, jalapenos, salt and 3/4 cup cheese in a large bowl. Sprinkle with flour; toss to coat. Spread the mixture in the prepared baking dish and cover with foil. Bake the casserole until it is bubbling and the squash is tender, 35 to 45 minutes. Spoon salsa over the casserole and sprinkle with the remaining 1 1/2 cups cheese. Bake, uncovered, until golden and heated through, 20 to 30 minutes. Sprinkle with scallions and red onion.
