Rosati, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Alfred State College, has announced the Dean’s List of students for the spring 2009 semester. Alfred State College offers associate degrees in close to 52 programs in the fields of agriculture, health, business, vocational, and engineering technology, as well as liberal arts and sciences. MCKEAN COUNTY LIVESTOCK CLUB On June 14h the McKean County Livestock Club held a meeting at the Courtyard located in Smethport. The meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by Aaron Strait. The American Pledge was done by Aimee Darrah, and the 4-H Pledge was done by Aaron Strait. Drinks were provided by Aaron Strait, snack was provided by Aimee Darrah. The secretary’s report was given by Aimee Darrah, and the treasurer’s report was given by Kim Tanner (the club leader). The members discussed some ideas for their fair table during their meeting. The members made a decorative wind item for their craft time. The next meeting will be held on July 12th at 2 p.m. at the residence of Ron & Kim Tanner. f

But some people are avoiding making home repairs because they are worried about the cost. Please let your readers know that some problems have to be taken care of when they’re small, before they become really expensive to fix. Thanks. -- Bill in Minneapolis A: Sure thing! It’s essential that certain home repairs (and maintenance items) be tackled right away before they develop into much bigger messes -- even if the repair needs to be done by a professional. Bath fixtures can avoid premature replacement if the tile surface is kept watertight, and the subsurface, usually drywall, remains dry. 4. Inspect electrical cords and outlets for signs of distortion, discoloration or cracks in the insulation, and hire an electrician to replace tired outlets that no longer hold a plug. A defective receptacle, light switch or fixture replaced during a scheduled visit will save you hundreds of dollars over an emergency repair.

5. Weatherproof windows and doors. These are the two areas with the largest amount of air transfer in both cold and hot weather. Use a digital thermometer to check the seal quality and inspect the caulking for areas that have cracked or shrunk, which will allow water to damage siding and floors. Once sealed, use a programmable thermostat to help regulate air temperature, which could save you up to 10 percent on your monthly energy bill. Consider getting a home energy audit. HOME TIP: When hiring a contractor to make home repairs, always insist on a written estimate before any work begins. Beverly Clark, author of Planning A Wedding To Remember, explains the criteria to consider when selecting a diamond: Color- The clearer the diamond, the greater its value. Diamonds are graded on a scale: The greater the degree of color in the stone, the lower the stone’s value, with the exception of very rare colored diamonds which are extremely valuable. Clear or colorless stones are referred to as perfect. Cut- Accuracy in cutting is essential to the beauty and sparkle of the diamond. The stones are proportioned and faceted to maximize the brilliance through their crowns. The brilliant or round cut is the most common. Other shapes include oval, pear, marquise, emerald

Hornish Jr. Is Adjusting to NASCAR DOVER, Del. -- Sam Hornish Jr. is getting the hang of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Hornish, from Defiance, Ohio, has quite the impressive resume. He is a former winner of the Indianapolis 500 and a three-time IndyCar champion. When he struggled in NASCAR, many observers anticipated that he might return to the open-wheel ranks, but the challenge of adapting to stock cars appealed to him. Though he was runner-up to Regan Smith in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year race, Hornish was only 35th in the final standings. He has stuck with the NASCAR experiment, and recently his performances have

Krueger, a psychiatrist, combines psychology, economics and neuroscience to address questions like the ones above. Because there is a "secret" language of money, many of us make mistakes. Nearly every chapter in the book contains a quiz, designed to help us understand why we do what we do. The quizzes are deceptively simple (such as "What is your current income, and what level of income would it take to insure your happiness and contentment?") It is in the explanations that our patterns are revealed. According to the book, all of us have a "money story," an unconscious tale we tell ourselves about who we are, what money means to us and how much we're worth. The problem is the secrets we keep from ourselves about money, whether it's how much credit-card debt

we've really run up or the way we rationalize an indulgent purchase. For example, when we make a risky purchase, there is a chemical component to our action, a rush that comes in anticipation of making the purchase. That same chemical reaction shuts down the minute the purchase is made. Krueger shows us how to decipher what our actions really mean. "The Secret Language of Money" is for anyone who's ever been in debt, been rich but unhappy, been caught in an impulse buy/return cycle with merchandise, made promises and bargains about cutting down on spending, been a workaholic or shopped to satisfy feelings of envy or power.
