Columbia Basin College...
Future role in the community
Columbia Basin College is one of Pasco’s biggest institutions both physically and economically. It employs six hundred people and serves over 7,000 people every academic quarter. The higher education landscape is changing around the Tri-Cities. WSUTri-Cities now offers full four-year programs and CBC will initiate its first full four-year program next September. Could the day come when a student might take their first two years of higher education at WSU-Tri-Cities, then transfer to CBC to complete a bachelor’s degree? Not likely, but not impossible… A lot that was taken for granted about the role of each institution is no longer necessarily accurate. The future of Columbia Basin College is the subject of this month’s Pasco Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at 11:30AM on Monday, October 13th, at the Pasco Red Lion Hotel. CBC President Rich Cummins will outline some of the school’s strategy for the future and discuss some of the steps down that path to be taken in the near future. Cummins joined the Columbia Basin College staff in 1990 as a member of the English faculty. He moved to the administrative staff in 1996, working with the school’s technology and the distance Rich Cummins President, Columbia Basin College
learning program. During the 2006-07 school year he served as interim President while Dr. Lee Thornton was on sabbatical. Between those who are in school, those with children or grandchildren in school and those who rely on Columbia Basin College for ongoing education and training of their work force, a larger number of people than one might suspect have a stake in the future of Columbia Basin College. To assure that a prospect returns a call is almost impossible. However, I have few ideas for you in Little Miracle #87, The Watering Hole. Everyone has a professional they need to meet. Some executives will not return your phone calls. Everyone you need to meet has a favorite watering hole. Search for events that they frequent. I have four suggestions:

Hello! My name is Ryan Brault and I am the 2008-2009 President of the Pasco Chamber of Commerce. I am a financial advisor with Edward Jones. My home— and family, of course—and office are all here in Pasco. This is an exciting time to step up to being a part of the leadership team for the Pasco Chamber. There is a great deal of momentum from the last year and as we move into the 4th quarter of this year I am looking forward to continued growth in membership and improvement in the services that we offer. I am happy to welcome our new board members and I thank them in advance for their commitment and service to the chamber and the community. I also thank those who continue on in service on the board for their willingness to help keep that momentum growing.

I am sure that we all appreciate those who are retiring from board membership for their hard work these last couple of years. They were there to see the Chamber through some rough spots and help reverse what had been a downward trend. To them and many other strong supporters of the Chamber who worked behind the scenes this last year or two go our thanks for their positive, enthusiastic outlook from which we now benefit. The Chamber will continue to refocus and redefine itself in this fast-paced, ever-changing world. There are deep roots here…and they give us a strong foundation for continued growth, while still changing with the technology and the times to meet the needs as they in turn change. The Chamber members represent a diverse network of small businesses and professionals. They are and will continue
to be the backbone of this community— individuals and families living and working here in Pasco, Franklin County and the surrounding area. A quick note—I appreciate the responses to the membership survey contained in the previous newsletter. If you would like to participate in that and haven’t yet, I encourage you to find your copy of last month’s newsletter and do that, or send an email to the Chamber. We want to make sure that we provide the value that we hope you expect. All comments received and surveys turned in will be taken into account as we go through the process of strategic planning in upcoming board meetings.
