A History of Montclair I

t is impossible to sum Montclair up in a few words. It’s hard not to love the place. I have been asked to outline the history of Montclair for Townscape. I will start with the history of our town in ancient times, the times I find most interesting. If I am invited back in the future, I will be proud to share more recent history. The Unami Delaware Indians — who called themselves the Lenape or Lenni Lenape, which means “original people” — did not have permanent villages on our mountain. They traveled through Montclair to get to their winter camps in the West and to their summer camps in the East. They didn’t have a name for what is now Montclair; it was simply part of Scheyichbi, “long water land,” which is what they called New Jersey. They called the mountain “Watchung.” They had names for the brooks that flow through the area: Nishuane, Yanticaw, Watsessing. They called the Europeans Swannuken, “salt water people.” The first Swannuken were the Dutch, who claimed New Jersey as part of New Netherland in 1609. They didn’t settle here. either. Their first towns were on Manhattan Island and in Jersey City. In 1664, the English captured the Dutch capital on Manhattan. James, the Duke of York, gave New Jersey to his friends John Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. Sir George’s nephew, Philip Carteret, became the first proprietary governor of New Jersey. The new owners wanted to sell as much land as they could as fast as they could. A group of English settlers from the New Haven area, who were unhappy with politics in their colony, and a group of 14 Dutchmen took advantage of the cheap land prices. The English bought a tract called New Ark, or Newark, along the Passaic River in 1666, which ended up being the size of present-day Essex County. The Dutch in 1679 bought 10,000 acres, which today comprise most of Little Falls,

Clifton, Passaic and Paterson. They had to pay a quitrent of 50 English pounds a year plus “one fatt hen.” In 1694 Jasper Crane, one of the English settlers in Newark, bought 150 acres “at the foot of the mountain” for his son Azariah and 150 acres for his son Jasper. These lots were the beginning of Cranetown, which later came to be known as Montclair. Azariah, his wife, Mary, and their son Nathaniel built the first house in Montclair, near the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Orange Road. It was torn down about 100 years ago. John Hendrick Speer was one of the 14 Dutchmen. His share of the purchase was what became Little Falls. His great-grandson, Reynier, built a home on Upper Mountain Avenue in 1788, which still stands. That house, at 612 Upper Mountain, became the heart of Speertown, as Upper Montclair was called. Abraham Van Gieson took advantage of cheap land prices and in 1700 bought a small lot in what is now Nutley. The Dutch reckoned land value by access to water. Abraham’s lot was considered small because it had only about a quarter-mile of frontage along the Yantacaw River, but it extended all the way back to the top of the mountain. Continued on Page 8

History Continued from Page 5

The Van Gieson family owned everything between Bellevue Avenue and Watchung Avenue from Nutley to Cedar Grove. Abraham’s house is still in Nutley, on Chestnut Street. The Van Giesons became prominent in Upper Montclair history. Abraham’s grandson, also named Abraham, was a captain during the Revolution. He and his wife, Fytje, inherited 66 acres at the corner of Valley Road and Watchung Avenue and built a house there in 1778. It was rebuilt and changed in the early 20th century, but still stands at 76 Watchung Ave. Rynier I. VanGieson built 346 North Mountain Ave. in approximately 1827. Augustus Theodore VanGieson, grandson of Isaac R. VanGieson, built 439 Valley Road in the 1840s. All of Montclair’s original homes have been demolished. Three existing houses are believed to have been built in the 1740s: 771 Valley Road, 149 Watchung Ave., and 136 Union St. Because the records are sketchy, the dates could be off by as much as 50 years. All three houses have been altered and remodeled extensively and do not look like the colonial houses they once were. One house that looks much as it did is 471 Valley Road, built about 1786 by Daniel and Jane Sigler. Also retaining much of their character are the houses at 128 North Mountain, built by Walling Egbert in 1786; 50 North Mountain, built by Josiah Crane in 1796; and 369 Claremont, built in the 1790s by Nathaniel Crane for his freed slave, James Howe. No major Revolutionary War battles took place in Montclair, although there were patrols and foraging parties from both sides here. On Sept. 23, 1780, the Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington brought their armies to Montclair to stage an attack on Hessian supply depots on Staten Island. The attack was to have taken place on a moonless night, Sept. 26, but the boats Lafayette needed to cross the Kill Van Kull

2008

never showed up, and when dawn arrived, the element of surprise was gone. Lafayette returned to Montclair, and the armies remained here for three weeks. Washington stayed in a house at the corner of Valley Road and Claremont Avenue. The house is gone, but a plaque — on a boulder that was always at the site — commemorates the place. The house Lafayette stayed in is also gone, but, for some reason, its doorstep remains. It had been the house of Isaac R. and Mary Van Gieson. A plaque and a tiny park mark the spot, next to Photo Cullen at 551 Valley Road. Montclair remained part of Newark until 1812, when Bloomfield, of which Cranetown was a part, split away from Newark and became West Bloomfield. The first railroad was built in the 1850s, and with it came access to New York. New York businessmen brought their families to breathe the fresh air. Many stayed. They started to buy the farmers out. What really started modern Montclair was the second railroad. When the citizens of Bloomfield refused to bond the second railroad in 1868, the citizens of West Bloomfield voted to secede. Julius H. Pratt, who was to become the president of the second railroad, suggested the name Montclair. His home, built in 1857, was on Elm Street. It is now Martin’s Funeral Home. Rich businessmen poured into the town and bought lots to develop and large lots on the hill for their own grand houses. Many of the old farmhouses were altered and used as temporary houses while the huge Victorians went up. Most of the houses that we think of as huge today were actually small to these “newcomers.” The really big houses, situated on enormous lots, were torn down in the early 20th century. The “small” Victorians survived. Many of the houses that we admire today on Upper Mountain Avenue and similar streets were built in the first quarter of the 20th century.
