HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world's largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own "armor and weapons" here, in our newsletter, so it is called THE ANVIL.

This year has been an exciting one for the Hephaestus. I can remember times where it seemed like meeting once a month was too often to get together, and now it seems like we have so much to do that two or three times a month isn't enough!
You may also recall that we're planning the Captain's Cookout... and a Firefly Shindig in the coming months. After talking with Pete, I don't see any reason we can't combine those events, and have a Firefly-themed Captain's Cookout! It'll be shiny! It will either be in June or July... keep your eyes open for an announcement.
The 2008 Region 2 Summit has been awarded, and it's gonna be close by! The USS New Hope, based in Montgomery, will be hosting it's first ever Summit, and I couldn't be prouder of our former Shuttle. Several of the USS Hephaestus crew have already pledged our support to this event, and I encourage you to help out too. Let me know how you want to be involved, and I'll pass it on to Nancy, Jan and Doug.
You may have picked up on the idea that Texas Hold'em poker has become a standard game among the Hephaestus crew. You'd be right! We have an informal poker group that's been rotating through member homes for the last year. If you're interested in having an event at your home, this could be a great, inexpensive way to do it. Whether you want to play or just host, it's a great night of socializing. Contact me or Pete for more details.
The flip side of this announcement is that it puts the Summit exactly one week away from the upcoming OmegaCon convention, to be held here in Birmingham. You may recall these folks attended a Hephaestus meeting, looking for staff and support, and while I'm willing to support the convention with my money and attendance, I'll probably be too tied up planning the Summit to give any staffing time to OmegaCon... Maybe the next year, when the Summit won't be staffed by us!
The second Annual Gratitude Festival has been announced, and once again it's going to be held in September at the same location near Jackson's Gap. This was a great event last year, and I can't recommend enough how much you'll enjoy attending. When the dates are firmed up, I'll let you know. If you haven't been to a Business Meeting in a while, try to make one. We have a lot of new faces, and Stan is the perfect host for us, opening his store every month. He's never once asked us to buy anything, which is incredible... So I will... Come by and meet some new folk, and support Stan by buying something.
Speaking of time and support... I have recently turned in my resignation to the STARFLEET CompOps group. I've got a lot of stuff on my plate these days, and it was the one thing I felt I could cut out that would make a big difference immediately. I've enjoyed working there, and will probably continue to help as I have time, and I appreciate them giving me the opportunity to serve there.
USS HEPHAESTUS
Until next month...

I am writing this briefing on my brand spankin’ new iMac computer and I will email it with my high speed Internet connection! Truly I have moved from the Dark Ages to the Space Age in computers! Because I have a new Internet service provider, I have a new email address which is as follows:
[email protected]. Memorial Day has come and gone, so summertime is here, time for picnics, family reunions, trips to the beach, and Hephaestus socials. No we don’t have a trip to the beach planned, but Pete has some fun socials scheduled. They are listed elsewhere in this Anvil. One of my favorite events is the Captain’s or summer cookout. It was scheduled for July, but has been moved to June 16 or 23. Check the Hephaestus list for the definite date. See you at the cookout. Pat Hicks
FIREFLY SHINDIG TO BE HELD IN JULY In order to get as many people as possible to be able to attend, and to give us more time to plan, the 'Starfleet Shindig' hosted by the USS Hephaestus in Birmingham has been rescheduled for July 21. For those of you who are already Firefly fans, you will have a day full of shiny fun, and if you aren't already a fan, here's your chance to find out what all the talk about one of the greatest sci-fi series of all time is all about!
table will include, among other things, melted cheese and strawberries, plus lots of chips and snacks. We'll play a round of Dinosaur Races, where you can threaten the other players with "I Can Kill You With My Brain" and lots of other cards, followed by Poker for Chores (bring ten untraceable credits for the pool, winner will take home enough to fuel his ship long enough for him and his naughty men to slip around a bit longer).
The day will start at 2 p.m., and will feature a cookout (you'll have to rustle up your own varmint, but we'll provide all the fixins), plenty of refreshments (including our very own Mudder's Milk, which we'll be brewing up from various combinations of chocolate, ice cream, and a blender), viewings of Firefly episodes all day including the Big Damn Movie and (if someone brings it, or we can get our hands on a copy) the Done The Impossible DVD. More details will be announced as we get closer, but mark your calendar now and plan to have a fun day!

by Dennis Evans Greetings, As you have read the Starflleet/Firefly Shindig (a.k.a. The Captains Cookout) has been set for July 21st at the home of Pete and Sue Ellen Mohney. This should be a great time as the cookouts always are. This years event will offer a slightly new theme with the Firefly Theme. For those who may not know, Firefly was a TV series that aired on Fox a few years back and later became a Motion Picture named Serenity. While only running a short time the series has developed a strong following and if you ever take time to watch you will understand why. Please make plans to attend. The Deadline for The next Anvil is Tuesday June 26th. Please get me your submissions by that time. As always please send your submission to me at
