Gillian Armstrong RETROSPECTIVE A Collaboration of the UP Film Institute & Pelikula@TitusBrandsma Date:

19 September 2004

Venue: UP Film Institute Videotheque

There's no doubt that Gillian Armstrong has had a brilliant career and it's partly due to her films that Australian Cinema is being raved overseas and its talents lured by Hollywood. The UP Film Institute and pelikula@titusbrandsma pay tribute to one of the pillars of the movie industry Down Under. Veteran film critic Leonard Maltin couldn’t have said it better with the following descriptions of the films to look forward to:

1 pm MY BRILLIANT CAREER (1979 - AUS - 101 min.) Excellent portrait of a headstrong young woman (Judy Davis) determined to live a life of independent and intelligent pursuits in turn-of-the-century Australia. Based on a true story. 1980 Golden Globe Best Foreign Film (nom). 1980 Academy Awards Best Costume Design (nom). 1980 BAFTA Best Actress (win), Most Promising Newcomer (win). 1979 Australian Film Institute Best Film (win), Best Director (win), Best Adapted Screenplay (win). 1979 Cannes FF Palme d'Or (nom). (Courtesy of the Embassy of Australia)

3.30 pm MRS. SOFFEL (1984 - USA - 110 min.) Interesting but gloomy rendering of a true story set in 1901, when wife of Pittsburgh prison warden (Diane Keaton) falls in love with convicted murderer (Mel Gibson). 1985 Berlin Int'l. FF Golden Bear (nom). 1984 Golden Globe Best Actress - Drama (nom).

6 pm HIGH TIDE (1987 - AUS - 120 min.) Quietly emotional story of a woman (Judy Davis) who inadvertently encounters the teenage daughter she abandoned years ago. It's fun to see Davis in the opening scenes playing a backup singer for a crummy Elvis impersonator. 1989 Nat'l. Society of film Critics Best Actress (win). 1987 Australian Film Institute Best Actress (win), Best Supporting Actress (win), Best Film (nom), Best Director (nom), Best Original Screenplay (nom). (Subject to change)
