Titus Brandsma Center – Media Program Details of Proposed Activities for the three-year time frame and effective measures for evaluation

(in close coordination with the core groups and advisory groups) Objective 1: Revival of Traditional Media Regular Programs 1. Research/Study of existing and extinct traditional media forms in different project sites for the purposes of the following per year: 

First year:

focus on the inventory of all existing and extinct traditional forms of media



Second year:

focus on uses of these forms; practical application and implementation; and revival



Third year:

impact and effectivity of these forms on personal, community life and its collective contribution to social development and nation building; suggested activity: production of a media artifact: results of the research will be the content of short video documentary showcasing indigenous traditional forms-rituals, dances, ceremonies, material culture used in communication like gongs, tambuli, town criers, etc...

Measure:

monthly report on the progress of the research to the committee on research (core group), copy of research output every year; copy of the video documentary

2. Networking - formation of folk media groups (community-based one per BCC, parish-based for quasi-religious activities, one only and school-based groups, three groups from one established theatre club if there’s any) through auditions or already established groups within the mission area 

First year:

inventory of theatre groups within the barrios, town and provincial level for production of a directory and easy networking; also, have a following of their activities (facilitated by the resource and data base center)



Second year:

conceptualization of tie-up and collaboration projects to aid and give to local theatre groups within the mission areas (facilitated by the core group in coordination with the advisory group)

2 introduction of local theatre groups within the mission area (Escalante, Agusan, etc...) must have been made beforehand through letters or other means 

Third year:

Measure:

enhance networking relationships and alliance building

monthly status report on the progress of making the directory, results of tie-ups and networking efforts

3. Group Study and Theatre Program (community and school-based, per folk media group), a weekly session of dialogue, sharing and critical analysis of oral media content such as folklores, legends, epics, myths, short stories, poetry and proverbs. Discussion will include sharing of experience, relevance and application in present day situations (family, community and society) Sample Routine: 1st week

mini play/drama of chosen folk literature; after, discussions on the value revealed by the literature, then processing through sharing of experience; as an assignment, members will be asked to think of possible solutions to conflicts presented in the literature in relation to present day situation then present it through these mini drama on the next session

2nd week

presentation of alternative story endings in answer to conflicts presented process it through sharing/discussion afterwards (this will give them wider perspectives in problem resolutions)

3rd and 4th week

presentation of another folk literature going through the same process



First year:

implementation of the group study and theatre program regularly (weekly) throughout the year



Second year:

continuation of the program; the following activities are suggested: sharing of the findings of group study sessions through forums (twice a year - relevance and practical application of these folk literature (facilitated mostly by the elderly and adults in the group) contest for the best mini plays/dramas conducted under the program, two groups will be winning said competition (community-based and schoolbased groups will choose a folk literature that strikes them best during the group study session, facilitated mostly by the youth sector)

3 in collaboration with the core group and advisory group, these plays can be mobilized for tours within schools and barrios in nearby towns and cities at the end of the year, a concert of mini plays/dramas 

Third year:

continuation of program; forums on the findings during the group study session; presentation and awarding of best mini plays; concert and a suggested major activity: after the awarding of the two best mini plays and a possible tour, a major theatre production (with complete costumes, props, utilization of an improved set and lighting techniques) will be prepared fusing the community-based and school-based theatre groups in one and be a part of this major play; this is in close coordination with an established theatre group in the province

Measure:

monthly report, annual report on summary of findings during sessions, documentation of forums and mini plays (photos, written or video-optional)

4. Series of workshops and trainings for folk media groups – quarterly workshops of three days each on skill-enhancement (community-based and school-based) 

First year:

basic skills on acting, simple cultural presentation (dance, monologue, chorus, mime) stage management and directorial, included team-building



Second year:

advanced skills on acting, cultural presentations, stage management and directorial, included team building and leadership



Third year:

updating of skills and specialized trainings on technical aspect (set design, light and sounds, costume) and stage management

Measure:

Objective 2:

evaluation of every workshops and trainings through evaluation sheets given at end of each series

Strengthening and advancement of organization and integration of practitioners

Regular programs 1. Networking - formation of communicators’ group (community-based, parish-based, school-based and representatives from community media) 

First year:

inventory of community media within the town and provincial level through direct mails

4 communicators’ group is composed of: grassroot communicators, church communicators (lay leaders, ministers and catechists), faculty/campus journalists, representatives of community media, and development workers particularly those who are working in NGOs/POs/GOs establishing of network facilitated by a directory/database of community media within the area (courtesy of resource/databank center) organize an initial dialogue among these communicators’ in the area of how can they collaborate and work together; special emphasis will be given to the issue on the real relationship of Church and media and how are church communicators being viewed by professional journalists; and, what the Church can offer the media people (pastoral care) 

Second year: strengthening of network through organizing solidarity nights (important for relaxation, reducing pressure imposed by deadlines and other outside factors



Third year:

Measure:

continuing alliance building and consolidation of communication network

monthly progress reports, documentation of events (photos, written, videooptional)

2. Focus Group Discussion (communicators’ group), a twice a month session, which discusses issues confronting communicators/media people in their every day routine; also to analyze content of news/feature reports, documentaries and other media artifact on issues (more or less monitoring each others’ works, thus, to achieve balance reporting for every issues at hand 

First year:



Second year: continue and develop more the process of the focus group discussion



Third year:

Measure:

implementation of the focus group discussion program; planning of topics for discussion must be done every month

evaluative research on the issues discussed during the sessions and the possible solutions to this and come out with a module on this

monthly report of the discussions made; annual report for the summary of these discussions and the evaluation

3. Media literacy education (between communicators’ group and community members-BCCs, students and parishioners)

 First year:

a twice a year public discussion on issues, question and answer type the focus of the dialogue will be to arrive at a new understanding of how

5 media can contribute to social development; and how the members of the community and media people can collaborate to achieve this 

Second year:

series of workshops and trainings (quarterly, three days each) which will focus on analyzing media content of various media artifact in print, broadcast, internet and other audio/visual medium



Third year:

continuing of the media education series with additional suggested activities for integration: evaluative research on the impact of media education to recipients to be included in the module done for focus group discussion (a two-part module) with these efforts, development of courses to be integrated in the school curriculum and other areas will follow; production of modules for these courses will be required and use as primary aid for instruction, related materials (books, journals, articles, etc...) will only be references; modules to be written by the members of the communicators’ group is essential to cater to the particular needs of their community (these are based on the collective ideas surfaced during the sharing/dialogue sessions)

Measure:

documentation of each event; monthly progress report on the development of courses and production of modules

4. Annual retreat and mission conference (communicators’ group and invited media people), a three day yearly retreat and mission conference to conclude the event 

First year:

focus on Church and Media and teambuilding; how media is being viewed by the people?



Second year:

focus on “Media at the Service of Social Development”; where is media in the society?



Third year:

focus will be on “renewing the mission”; how am I as a media/communicator contributed in so far as development and education of people is concern?

Measure:

documentation of each retreat/mission conference

5. Series of Trainings (communicators’ group and media people), a twice a year of three days each series of trainings for the communicators for updating of skills and teambuilding 

First year:

training/seminar on Public Journalism/Countryside Journalism and integration of social communication



Second year:

training/seminar on how to better utilized these new concepts on

6 helping communities to realize their potentials and develop socially through continuous participation in social action 

Third year:

Measure:

Objective 3:

application of new technologies as aid to the profession; a new perspective of searching for news/stories – precision journalism

documentation of these trainings and submit a report; evaluation per training through evaluation sheets

Sharpening and heightening utilization of various means in social communication

1. Management of the Resource and Databank Center (facilitated by the core group) 

First year:

the Resource and Databank Center will have the following in its care: Database of Folk Media Groups within the mission area – barrio, town and provincial level (with directory, updated every year) Database of Community Media working within the mission area – barrio, town and provincial level (with directory, updated every year) Database of national groups – folk media and media companies (with directory, updated every year) Database of probable resource speakers, lecturers, groups/institutions that can facilitate in-depth and specialized workshops and lectures Maintenance of book/film library, equipment and other needs



Second year:

maintenance of database and continue acquisition (will be working in close coordination with advisory group for requests: funding, accreditation, support from government/private companies and individuals



Third year:

maintenance of database and continue acquisition of equipment and other library materials; and putting up a Communication Centrum (physical museum and online) showcasing historical communication artifacts (first TV/radio in the community), indigenous communication materials – costumes, instruments, accessories. (in coordination with the research group involved in the study of traditional/folk media)

Measure:

monthly progress reports of each database; reports on latest acquisitions

7 2. Implementation of communication systems (indigenous/group media forms) in response to community issues (facilitated only by the core group, but efforts are from the members of the community-BCCs and students) 

First year:

putting up of bulletin boards, graffiti walls, flip charts, wall paintings, suggestion boxes and other applicable means to help address community issues (dissemination of information and stimulate expression of opinion) production of information kits (IEC materials – information education campaign materials) of social issues confronting community: environment conservation, electoral and good governance, resolving conflicts, alternative livelihood, health and family planning for parish-based (parishioners), organization of quasi-religious activities



Second year:

maintenance of the communication systems pursued and its development



Third year:

maintenance of the communication systems pursued and its development; compilation of IEC materials

Measure:

quarterly reports on the communication systems set-up and evaluation reports on the Impact of these systems, copy of compiled IEC materials

3. Organizing of academic activities, which contributes to the understanding and reflection of community issues of the youth sector (school administrators and students are the key players, facilitated by the core group) 

First year:



Second year: integration of these activities in the school curriculum; start inter-school contests



Third year:

Measure:

academic activities are as follows: poster making contests, photo exhibits, essay writing contests, feature writing contests, sculpture, pottery, modelling and carving contests with community issues as topics of these activities

maintenance of these activities as an annual event; production of a book (compilation) of posters, photos, essays and feature article which won in school contests (compiled per theme)

report/update – names of winners per contests, documentation of these events progress report on book making

4. Film Dialogue – a weekly viewing of films, one film per schedule, (foreign/art, quality films) and processing through dialogue (organized and facilitated by the core group, whole community is invited) 

First year:

implementation of the program; monthly themes will be followed for

8 scheduling of films to be shown 

Second year: maintenance of the weekly program



Third year:

maintenance of the weekly program and the implementation of the suggested activities: production of a module on the process of film dialogue including sharing done during sessions and the impact of the program to the viewers

Measure:

quarterly report on the dialogue; progress report on the module

5. Maintenance of newspaper section and radio/TV segment (facilitated by the core group) 

First year:

materials for writing the script for the segments will be coming from the IEC produced by the community or other media artifacts produced by them and the students’ essays and articles; supply materials to segments related to the interests of the community work out a collaboration from contacts in community media companies (tie-ups, project deals), simulcast of forums and lectures organized by the different groups within the community – group study/theatre, communicators’ groups collaboration with community radio stations for a drama production produced by theatre groups within the mission areas and train them for this purpose (radio drama production)



Second year:

maintain a segment in community radio/TV and newspaper section and a radio drama.



Third year:

maintenance of segments; compilation of newspaper segment

Measure:

monthly reports including copies of scripts used; annual reports of topics/issues discussed in the segments, copy of the compiled regular newspaper section maintained by the community

9 FLOW OF PROJECT To start: Advisory groups will be set up per mission area to direct the implementation of the project in the local communities.



Local Media Core Group The members will be divided into committees that would handle specific responsibilities: Research, Group Study and Theatre, Community Issues, Communicators’ Group. Group will share in handling the Resource/Databank Center, “Pelikula sa Kanayunan” (weekly film dialogue) and trimedia segments (radio, TV, print). Committees will have groups/workers at the community level (BCCs) and schools.

  

Basic Christian Community (BCC) In this level, study and theatre groups will be formed to carry out the Group Study and Theatre Program of the media core group. Committee on Group Study/Theatre will oversee the activities of the group and keeps report/updates of its progress. Community leaders’ group will also be set up to tackle community issues within their area. Committee on Community Issues handles the group.

  School

Workers on this project from the school level are the administrator, faculty and students/campus journalists. One big theatre group will be formed and divided into small groups. These groups will be responsible for the Group Study and Theatre Program, which will be facilitated by the Committee on Group Study/Theatre. Community and Development Group will also be established to contribute in the advocacy of social development through addressing community issues. Committee on Community Issues also oversees the group.

  

Research Group  

This group is formed with members coming from the school and the BCCs (community leaders/members, school administrator, faculty, non-teaching personnel and students). Responsible for carrying out research/studies to be conducted within the community (Escalante, Agusan, etc...) with the Committee on Research overseeing the group’s progress

Communicators’ Group  

Composed of the grassroot-Church-school communicators, community media and development workers (NGOs/POs/GOs). Responsible for the initiation of the Focus Group Discussion, Media Literacy Education Series, Annual Retreats/ Mission Conferences and Trainings for the group. A committee from the core group will facilitate the group’s development.
