Ramblings: 10thousanddoors.org Two things you don’t often hear in the same breath are United Methodist Church and cutting edge. We are a steady group. Traditionally we like to take things a little slower than society. We give great thought and prayer before we do something because we know that what the church does (and the people of the church do as representatives of the church and therefore God) matters. So you can imagine my shock when a friend of mine told me about an exciting new web presence of the church. I have visited the different web sites of the church for years. Our church has one (fumcrosenberg.net). The district has one (southwestdistrict.org). The conference has one (txcumc.org). The jurisdiction has one (scj.umportal.org). And the international church has many (umc.org is the main one). For the most part these are fine web sites, but they usually seem a little staid and predictable. However this new site is different. www.10thousanddoors.org is the United Methodist churches new site focusing on what we are all about: helping others as we all grow closer to Christ. On this site you can find all kinds of ways we are making a difference in the world. You can find volunteer opportunities around the world, watch videos of people doing exactly what Christians should be doing. This is all part of a new idea that has swept through the United Methodist Church that is called “Rethink Church.” However a pastor friend of mine has said that the name “Rethink Church” is simply wrong. When people start talking

about rethinking church and decide that to be authentic Christians we should be standing with our brothers and sisters as they face oppression, feeding those who are hungry, ministering to those who are in prison, they aren’t actually rethinking church. They are rediscovering church. This is the way church was designed to be from the very beginning (I seem to remember something Jesus said to Peter after the resurrection, “Do you love me?” “Yes, Lord, I love you.” “Feed my lambs.”) I would encourage you to take a few minutes to look around the new web site and see how the use of cutting edge (I actually hate those kind of overused phrases) technology shows our church to the world in a great light. See how we are rediscovering what God wants us to do and to be, as individuals, as churches, and as the holy catholic church. IGS, John P.S. What I know is that if you read all the way to the end of the ramblings you saw the last line where I mention being part of the holy catholic church. Some of you are saying to yourselves, “Wait a minute. I thought we were Methodist and now the preacher says we are Catholic. I didn’t know Methodists were Catholic. We’re not! The UMC is not part of the Roman Catholic church (headquartered in Rome and lead by the Pope). We are part of the holy catholic (means “universal”) church that Christ created through his death and resurrection. What a difference a capital letter makes ;-)
