For the Month of May… Relay For Life 2009
“It was fun. I had a great time. I also got twelve hours of community service!” -Jonathan Burke

Hope Throughout the Decades
“I met cool people fighting for the same cause. It was great!” -John Wood
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
“It was unlike any other. It was refreshing to do community service with my peers and other youths of my age.” -Anne Marie Underwood “It was sexy.” -Yoyo Yo.
Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people to:
Teacher Appreciation
• Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight.
In honor of Teacher Appreciation week Valley Key Club officers distributed little treats to the teachers. Flowers made of foam were wrapped around Hershey’s chocolates. Small tags that acknowledged their hard work and dedication accompanied these gifts. Two hundred gifts were made for all of the Valley High School staff members. These were distributed to the teachers’ mailboxes at the end of the week. The next Monday teachers visited their boxes and found a sweet surprise waiting for them! We wanted to show our appreciation and gratitude for these outstanding educators and thank them for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence in the classroom.
• Remember loved ones lost to the disease. At Relay, people who have walked alongside people battling cancer can grieve and find healing. • Fight Back. We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease. Here are a few members’ experiences gained from Relay for Life throughout the years… “It was an exciting event! I had so much fun! Guitar Hero was a good game for entertainment. The variety of bands that came to perform was really good! Seeing all the survivors come together was touching.” -Krystle Del Barrio

Pennies For Patients Thousands of schools nationwide raise funds to cure leukemia and other blood related cancers through the Pennies for Patients program. This month Valley high school participated in the Pennies for Patients program in which students were encouraged to donate spare change to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The participating second period class that collects the most money was awarded a pizza party. The winning class raised $37.00. As a whole, Valley High School raised over $200.00 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and it’s all thanks to the staff and students!
