Taxonomy Different opinions exist with regards to the taxonomy of animals. For convenience and for the purposes of this course, the five-kingdom and ten-phylum scheme will be used. The ten phyla that make up the kingdom Animalia are: Protozoa, Porifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes, Nemathelminthes, Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and Chordata. During the rest of the semester, members of the class will be assigned into groups that will make oral and written reports on each of these phyla. Groups should include the following in their reports: 1.
Characteristics which separate the members of the phylum from other members of the animal kingdom
2.
Major classes of the phylum and the characteristics which separate the members of the class from other members of the phylum
3.
The different organs and organ systems that members of the phylum utilize specially those that are unique for the phylum
4.
Importance and contributions of the members of the phylum
5.
Representative animals for each class complete with common names and scientific names
6.
Visual aids (oral reports preferably using Powerpoint; pictures not necessary in the written reports)
Groups should: 1. E-mail the written report one week before the scheduled oral report for editing. 2. Present an oral report on the scheduled time. 3. Submit a printed copy of the edited written report on the scheduled time. 4. Make the printed copy of the edited written report available for their classmates to photocopy.
