Special Message Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Filipino Community: I welcome you to the Church of the Epiphany for your annual celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar. I am delighted that His Excellency, Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, Archbishop of Zamboanga City, is here with us today as the celebrant of our Mass and honored guest at our dinner. I wish to thank you for the magnificent statue of Our Lady of the Pillar that you have donated to our church and which has been blessed by Archbishop Valles. It will soon become an object of devotion and veneration for all the members of our parish community. I am grateful for all the good work that our Filipino community accomplishes here at Epiphany. MESSAGE At the outset I would like to thank Archbishop Romulo G. Valles for having accepted my invitation to be the main celebrant of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for our 20th Fiesta de la Santisima Virgen del Pilar and to officiate the enshrinement of La Virgen del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany. The enshrinement, of course, would not have been possible without the approval of Msgr. Leslie J. Ivers, Pastor of the Church of the Epiphany. On behalf of La Comunidad de Zamboanga de Nueva York I would like to thank Msgr. Ivers for his kindness and generosity. The enshrinement of La Virgen del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany is a dream come true and my trip to Zaragoza, Spain to obtain the statue of La Virgen del Pilar was well worth it. In this regard I would like to thank Consul General Ana Feria of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid and Fr. Julian Ruiz of the Basilica de La Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza who were so helpful to me . I would also like to thank Congresswoman Beng Climaco for gracing our Fiesta Pilar. Through the intercession of La Virgen del Pilar, we pray that the Holy Spirit will guide her in her daily task as a public official. I would also like to express my thanks to Ambassador and Mrs. Hilario G. Davide for having participated in our Fiesta de la Virgen del Pilar. Let us pray that La Virgen del Pilar will protect not only the people of Zamboanga but also the other islands of the Philippines and the entire world from natural disasters and adversities. The Story behind La Virgen del Pilar Our Lady of the Pillar (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Pilar) is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her claimed appearance in Spain. Her shrine is in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, by the river Ebro. According to legend, in the early days of the Church, the Apostle James the Greater was evangelizing the Gospel in Caesaraugusta, but his mission was making little progress until miraculously, he saw Mary committing him to Jerusalem. In his vision, she was atop a column or pillar, which was being carried by angels. That pillar is believed to be the same one venerated in Zaragoza today. Miraculous healings have been reported at the scene. In Zamboanga City, The Philippines, the Virgin of the Pillar has been venerated for almost four centuries. Her statue is embossed at the top of the façade of the 17th century Spanish military fort called El Fuerza Real de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza. The military fort is now a catholic Marian shrine. The city has also a street named after her - Pilar Street. Our Lady of the Pillar is celebrated on 12 October and is the patron virgin of Spain, the Hispanic peoples, the Hispanicized city of Zamboanga as well as other municipalities in the Philippines, and the Civil Guard of Spain. María del Pilar is a common female name in Latin American countries. In Spain, it is usually abbreviated to Pilar. In Davao City, the Circulo Zamboangueño de Davao--through their collaborative efforts--was able to build a shrine in honor of Nuestra Señora del Pilar. The shrine is sited within the premises of the Magsaysay Park. In the City of Manila, Our Lady of the Pillar is also the patroness of the Santa Cruz church at the heart of the district of Santa Cruz. This church is being administered by the Blessed Sacrament Congregation. The Jesuits had brought along with them the patroness when they administered the church during the Spanish era. In Santa Cruz, Manila, her feast day is also celebrated every 12th of October. However, the church has its Marian procession on the 3rd week of October. La Comunidad de Zamboanga de Nueva York Rediscover Zamboanga The City of Zamboanga (Chavacano/Spanish: Ciudad de Zamboanga) is located at the southernmost tip of Mindanao in the Philippines. It comprises of the southernmost portion of the Zamboanga Peninsula, extending from the northwestern part of Mindanao. Bounded on the south by the Basilan strait, on the west by the Sulu and Zamboanga del Norte, on the North by Zamboanga del Sur, and on the east by Zamboanga Sibugay, and the most populous city in the Philippines. Zamboanga City is one of the oldest cities in the country and is the most Hispanized. It is also one of the largest cities in the world in terms of area. It is the third chartered city in the Philippines. Zamboanga City is also one of several cities in the Philippines that are independent of any province. Philippine Commonwealth Act No. 39 signed by President Manuel Luis Quezón on October 12, 1936 established Zamboanga as a chartered city. It has been known variously as "El Orgullo de Mindanao" (The Pride of Mindanao), nicknamed the "City of Flowers," and affectionately called by Zamboangueños as "Zamboanga Hermosa" - Chavacano/ Spanish for "Beautiful Zamboanga". Today, the city is commercially branded for tourism by the city government as "Asia's Latin City," a clear reference to Zamboanga's identification with the Hispanized cultures of "Latin America" or the USA's "Latino" subculture. Zamboanga City has been the center of commerce, trade, health services, and education for all of the Western Mindanao Region. It is the seat of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority (popularly known as Zamboecozone). Zamboanga City brings its best foot forward during the popular Fiesta Pilar, celebrated in honor of the city's patron saint, La Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragoza Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza, Spain. A statue honoring the saint is prominently embossed above the facade on the eastern wall of the meter-thick walled fort called El Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (also called El Real Fuerza de San José in its early days). This Spanish army fort was built on June 23, 1635, by the Spanish Jesuit priest Fr. Melchor de Vera in defense against pirates and slave raiders. Zamboanga is home of the four major universities: Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Western Mindanao State University, Universidad de Zamboanga and the proposed UPZamboanga the second UP campus in Mindanao Island. The city contains the first Catholic diocese in Mindanao, today's Archdiocese of Zamboanga which was created in 1910 and elevated to an archbishopric in 1958. (Source: Wikipedia)

MESSAGE At the outset I would like to thank Archbishop Romulo G. Valles for having accepted my invitation to be the main celebrant of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for our 20th Fiesta de la Santisima Virgen del Pilar and to officiate the enshrinement of La Virgen del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany. The enshrinement, of course, would not have been possible without the approval of Msgr. Leslie J. Ivers, Pastor of the Church of the Epiphany. On behalf of La Comunidad de Zamboanga de Nueva York I would like to thank Msgr. Ivers for his kindness and generosity. The enshrinement of La Virgen del Pilar at the Church of the Epiphany is a dream come true and my trip to Zaragoza, Spain to obtain the statue of La Virgen del Pilar was well worth it. In this regard I would like to thank Consul General Ana Feria of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid and Fr. Julian Ruiz of the Basilica de La Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza who were so helpful to me . I would also like to thank Congresswoman Beng Climaco for gracing our Fiesta Pilar. Through the intercession of La Virgen del Pilar, we pray that the Holy Spirit will guide her in her daily task as a public official. I would also like to express my thanks to Ambassador and Mrs. Hilario G. Davide for having participated in our Fiesta de la Virgen del Pilar. Let us pray that La Virgen del Pilar will protect not only the people of Zamboanga but also the other islands of the Philippines and the entire world from natural disasters and adversities. The Story behind La Virgen del Pilar Our Lady of the Pillar (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Pilar) is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her claimed appearance in Spain. Her shrine is in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, by the river Ebro. According to legend, in the early days of the Church, the Apostle James the Greater was evangelizing the Gospel in Caesaraugusta, but his mission was making little progress until miraculously, he saw Mary committing him to Jerusalem. In his vision, she was atop a column or pillar, which was being carried by angels. That pillar is believed to be the same one venerated in Zaragoza today. Miraculous healings have been reported at the scene. In Zamboanga City, The Philippines, the Virgin of the Pillar has been venerated for almost four centuries. Her statue is embossed at the top of the façade of the 17th century Spanish military fort called El Fuerza Real de Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar de Zaragoza. The military fort is now a catholic Marian shrine. The city has also a street named after her - Pilar Street. Our Lady of the Pillar is celebrated on 12 October and is the patron virgin of Spain, the Hispanic peoples, the Hispanicized city of Zamboanga as well as other municipalities in the Philippines, and the Civil Guard of Spain. María del Pilar is a common female name in Latin American countries. In Spain, it is usually abbreviated to Pilar. In Davao City, the Circulo Zamboangueño de Davao--through their collaborative efforts--was able to build a shrine in honor of Nuestra Señora del Pilar. The shrine is sited within the premises of the Magsaysay Park. In the City of Manila, Our Lady of the Pillar is also the patroness of the Santa Cruz church at the heart of the district of Santa Cruz. This church is being administered by the Blessed Sacrament Congregation. The Jesuits had brought along with them the patroness when they administered the church during the Spanish era. In Santa Cruz, Manila, her feast day is also celebrated every 12th of October. However, the church has its Marian procession on the 3rd week of October. La Comunidad de Zamboanga de Nueva York Rediscover Zamboanga The City of Zamboanga (Chavacano/Spanish: Ciudad de Zamboanga) is located at the southernmost tip of Mindanao in the Philippines. It comprises of the southernmost portion of the Zamboanga Peninsula, extending from the northwestern part of Mindanao. Bounded on the south by the Basilan strait, on the west by the Sulu and Zamboanga del Norte, on the North by Zamboanga del Sur, and on the east by Zamboanga Sibugay, and the most populous city in the Philippines. Zamboanga City is one of the oldest cities in the country and is the most Hispanized. It is also one of the largest cities in the world in terms of area. It is the third chartered city in the Philippines. Zamboanga City is also one of several cities in the Philippines that are independent of any province. Philippine Commonwealth Act No. 39 signed by President Manuel Luis Quezón on October 12, 1936 established Zamboanga as a chartered city. It has been known variously as "El Orgullo de Mindanao" (The Pride of Mindanao), nicknamed the "City of Flowers," and affectionately called by Zamboangueños as "Zamboanga Hermosa" - Chavacano/ Spanish for "Beautiful Zamboanga". Today, the city is commercially branded for tourism by the city government as "Asia's Latin City," a clear reference to Zamboanga's identification with the Hispanized cultures of "Latin America" or the USA's "Latino" subculture. Zamboanga City has been the center of commerce, trade, health services, and education for all of the Western Mindanao Region. It is the seat of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority (popularly known as Zamboecozone). Zamboanga City brings its best foot forward during the popular Fiesta Pilar, celebrated in honor of the city's patron saint, La Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragoza Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza, Spain. A statue honoring the saint is prominently embossed above the facade on the eastern wall of the meter-thick walled fort called El Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (also called El Real Fuerza de San José in its early days). This Spanish army fort was built on June 23, 1635, by the Spanish Jesuit priest Fr. Melchor de Vera in defense against pirates and slave raiders. Zamboanga is home of the four major universities: Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Western Mindanao State University, Universidad de Zamboanga and the proposed UPZamboanga the second UP campus in Mindanao Island.
