You’ve taken the first step and picked up an issue of our informative publication, great work indeed! But the journey has just begun, inside you’ll find out about what’s Sure, we praise our city and rightfully so, we hot on our side love it as there is something here for everyone of the world in and in every season: speaking of which, we 2009. have just been informed that for the very first time this year, we’ll have a new manifestation called the Zagreb Cultural Summer which entails festivals, performances, exhibitions and other attractions between June and September. Great! So, without any further hindrance, pick up your marker, highlight your interests and we hope to see you in Zagreb throughout the course of 2009.

If you haven’t noticed we have all four seasons covered in details, now lets take a glimpse at autumn with the event appropriately entitled ‘Yes Zagreb’. From the end of September until the end of November, our city will be succumb by a variety of international and multicultural happenings ranging from festivals, theatre shows, performances, exhibitions etc. Creative people from different European and world centres arrive to Zagreb... and we invite you to partake, join in and share the experience with us!

One of Croatia’s finest national and cultural institutions is LADO, the ensemble for folk dances and songs of Croatia and some would say our cultural ambassadors to the world. In its 60 years, LADO has gathered the most famous Croatian choreographers, ethno-musicologists, folklorists and composers who have spent endless hours in choreographing some of the most magnificent dances and songs of our land. Today, LADO has 37 outstanding dancers who are at the same time excellent singers and they can easily transform from a dance ensemble into a folk choir, whilst there are also 15 excellent musicians that play 50 traditional and classical instruments. Their exquisite costumes are of amazing beauty with some older than 100 years. In marking their 60 year celebration, LADO have a detailed 2009 schedule which begins in March with the promotion of the documentary and multimedia

DVD ‘60 Years of LADO’. On March 22nd, a replica of their first ever concert held on February the 4th 1950, on the same stage at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb will be held. They perform at the Lisinski Hall on May 23rd with special concerts at the Croatian Music Institute in June and September. LADO will carry out their traditional summer tour with a performance at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival as well as visiting other coastal destinations. They travel to the USA and Canada from October 8th to November and will then carry out some traditional concerts back home before they begin to prepare for their traditional Christmas concerts in Zagreb. According to the critics, LADO is one of the best folklore ensembles in the world and have in 60 years graced 6 world continents and dazzled audiences throughout. In their jubilee year, we invite you to witness the pinnacle of our musical tradition and in all its glory.

Their artworks were an introduction to an entirely new, unstoppable avalanche of events which not only changed people, but their souls and spirituality. 120 masterpieces from the legendary groups ‘The Bridge’ and ‘The Blue Rider’ will be presented. Visitors will be able to enjoy the master pieces of Kandinski, Franz Marc, August Macke, Paul Klee, Aleksey Jawlenski, Ernest Ludvig Kirchner and many others who were so ahead of their time.

Considered as one of Croatia’s elite in modern fine arts, this memorial exhibit presents over 100 oils on canvas, as well as aquarelles and drawings. The exhibition gives the broadest and yet deepest insight into the artist’s relatively small opus which ended mysteriously at the tender age of 24. A magnificent collection of 103 etchings by the famous Dutch artist include his self portraits, the portraits showing his mother, his wife, co-workers and contemporaries as well as etchings of body figures, scenes from the Old and New Testament, historical and literature topics, genre-scenes, landscapes and nature studies will all be presented. The largest collection of clocks in this part of Europe has been gathered and themed sections organised to help inform visitors. Jan Reich is one of the Czech Republic’s leading contemporary photographers; his photography from the two cycles entitled Bohemia and House in a Landscape will be on display. 16.01. Gioachino Rossini – Cinderella

When this reworked fairytale was written centuries ago, the librettist Jacopo Feretti replaced the glass shoe with a bracelet due to Roman censorship – a bare female foot was not allowed to be shown on stage. The words were written in 22 days and Rossini wrote the music in just 24 days. It is known to be Rossini’s most complex opera. Croatian National

Dora Kovačević – Calender Having undertaken a scholarship at the ‘Ecole Superieure des Arts Decoratifs’ in Paris and later pursued her work at the Accademia di Belle Art in Milan, it is of no wonder that her works can be found in many museums. 27.01. Blackmore’s Night Medieval folk rock band led by legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and his wife Candice Night will perform as part of their “European Secret Voyage 2009’ tour. Public transport Zagreb’s public transport has a comprehensive system of tram and bus lines. Both transport systems have daily services beginning at 4-5am through to 11-12pm. Several lines operate throughout the night but at less regular intervals; for all schedules and daily timetables visit www.zet.hr. Identical tickets are used for both bus and tram journeys and are best purchased from kiosks costing 8 kuna each. It is also possible to buy tickets from drivers for 10 kuna, however this does not include the new modern trams. From the moment you board and insert the ticket in the automatic stamping machine, it is only valid for a one-way journey lasting 45 minutes maximum. A daily ticket costs 25 kuna and allows one day’s unlimited travel until 3am the following day. This could prove to be a good choice. If you would like to go sightseeing in the Upper Town, you can buy a ticket for only 4 kuna and ride in the popular Uspinjača (Funicular), the 40m lift which is scheduled every 10 minutes and operates from 6.30am to 12pm.
