Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefit until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

WARNING! Frank Quinn’s hiding your tax increase AGAIN. Last year, Quinn hid $360,000 in spending in what he calls “interdepartmental charges”. That’s a 7.2% tax increase that he concealed in your water and sewer bills! This year’s budget is even worse. Not only is he hiding another $360,000 in your sewer and water bills, again this year, now he’s hiding a 10% tax increase (almost $500,000 in new taxes) by using the FEMA money to bury his spending! Over two years, that’s $1.18 million in concealed spending, costing you over 24.4% in tax increases! In fact, Quinn’s stealth tactics prompted the Board to pass a “Truth in Budgeting” resolution to finally bring transparency to the budget.
Frank Quinn, we just can’t afford his failed policies anymore. This November, vote for a change and bring real leadership to Scotia-Glenville! Paid for by Local Business

SMALL TALK
KLAT LbyLA MOlsen S Peter neslO reteP yb
I think I will jump right into the flu shot controversy this week. I don’t know about you but the lawsuit filed by the healthcare workers over the mandatory flu shots doesn’t give me much confidence in our healthcare system. It also doesn’t make me really want to get a swine flu shot at all. I must admit that, being a biker, I understand their resistance to government mandates. Helmet laws have always been a bur under my saddle. Even though I would never be stupid enough to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, I really resent the government telling me that I have to. From that point of view, I can understand healthcare workers resisting the mandate. The problem I do have is that the healthcare folks are telling us the reason they don’t want to be forced to take the shots is they don’t trust them. We are told the shots have not been tested and might not be safe. And this is coming from people that ought to know about these things. It sure doesn’t make me want to rush out and get a H1N1 flu shot. Once again from the biker’s perspective, it would be kind of like being against helmet laws because I thought helmets had not yet been perfected and might not be safe. Well, any thinking person knows that this just not true. Helmets must all pass the same tests and have the same specifications. The manufacture of motorcycle helmets has been pretty much standardized over the years and they are all basically the same. Ah, but lately a new breed of helmet has been introduced. We now have carbon fiber. Are these really safe? Have they been thoroughly tested? Can we trust them as much as we did the older fiberglass or polycarbonate helmets? Should I join a protest that questions the safety of the specific helmet or should I protest the mandate of wearing a helmet in the first place? If I protest the use of a specific helmet, then I am calling into question the entire testing process of the DOT. Actually, I don’t have a problem with the testing process of the DOT and if they say a carbon fiber helmet is safe, I figure they have tested it and I will feel safe using one. The problem I do have with the healthcare workers is that they are telling us they don’t want to take the flu shots because they don’t think they are safe. If they were just saying they don’t like the mandate to have H1N1 flu shots, well heck, I would probably march with them. But they are, in effect, telling everyone not to get the flu shots because they have not been properly tested. And because of these statements by healthcare professionals, millions of people will probably not get flu shots and the pandemic could possibly run rampant through New York State. You see, it’s not for their own safety that the healthcare workers should get the flu shots. It’s for the safety of the people they come in contact with on a daily basis. To go back to the motorcycle helmet analogy, if a biker splatters his or her brains all over the pavement, nobody else gets hurt. A biker who gets into an accident without a helmet is only a danger to himself. I firmly believe that if a person wants to take that risk and act like a complete idiot then who am I or who is the government to try and stop him? However, healthcare workers who have not been immunized against the flu (whichever strain) are not only a danger to themselves but can also be a danger to everyone they treat or come in contact with. Now, I am in the age group that comes at the bottom of the totem pole for getting H1N1 flu shots anyway. But I would really like to know the nurse, or PA, or whoever, that’s treating me in the doctor’s office or in the hospital has gotten a flu shot. At least, then I would be a bit more content in the knowledge that I am not being exposed to the flu unnecessarily by someone who should know better. And so, if the healthcare workers tell me that they are going to get a flu shot anyway, but they don’t like being forced to, then I would support their cause. But telling the general public that the flu shots are not safe seems to me to be the height of irresponsibility. Even though I will be at the end of the line, I plan to get a H1N1 flu shot as soon as I can. I believe there is no more danger than there has been with getting a regular annual flu shot. I have been getting them for many years and have never had the flu. Government mandates are generally bad and I have fought them in the past. In this case I don’t like the government mandate but the reason given for fighting the mandate is a very bad thing indeed. And that’s Small Talk for this week. Defensive Driving Courses Offer Many Benefits By definition, defensive driving is driving in a manner that utilizes safe driving strategies, enabling motorists to address hazards more easily. These strategies go well beyond instruction on basic traffic laws and procedures. With defensive driving classes, students learn to improve their driving skills by reducing risks, anticipating situations and making safe, well-informed decisions. The benefits of taking a defensive driving class vary with each state, but often include a reduction of points on your driver’s license following a ticket and the assurance that insurance rates will not increase. In some states, taking a defensive driving course can mean a reduction of up to 10 percent in your insurance rates for a period of three to five years. Just as the benefits of defensive driving classes vary with each state, so do the requirements. While most basic defensive driving classes last four hours, some can be as long as six or eight hours. In some states, students have the option to take defensive driving courses online or watch a videotape or DVD, while other states only allow students to take defensive driving in a classroom setting. Defensive driving courses are regulated by each state and are designed to train drivers based on the laws of that state. Tips for Buying a Safe Vehicle
Safety is without a doubt one of the biggest and most pressing issues to consider when purchasing a new or used vehicle. How do consumers know if the vehicles they are purchasing can stand up to the myriad dangers of the open road? The bottom line is that there’s really no safety guarantee when it comes to cars. However, there are a lot of things to keep in mind and investigate when shopping for a vehicle that will give prospective buyers peace of mind once they hit the road.
Defensive driving courses also offer tips on how to properly use safety equipment to ensure the well-being of both the driver and passengers.
1. A good first step — even before consulting consumer reports on safe vehicles — is to talk to friends and family about which cars on the market they feel are the safest based on their personal experiences. If no one can provide sound advice, check message boards online for information pertaining to automobile safety.
More information on the benefits of defensive driving courses, courtesy of the American Safety Council, is available at www.safemotorist.com.
2. Next, begin combing consumer safety reports and newspaper articles for information on any automobiles of interest. Pay particular attention to crash data when doing this research.

3. After deciding on a particular vehicle, go and check out the car in person. Inspect the car closely and be sure the vehicle has front and side air bags, the most up-to-date seat belt features, superior traction control and anti-lock brakes, to name a few important safety features. 4. The weight of the car is very important. Heavier vehicles tend to fare better in crash tests than lighter vehicles, as lighter vehicles tend to tip over more easily.
5. Take the car for a test drive. Focus on how the vehicle handles and how quickly and easily it accelerates and stops. Test the seat belts to make sure they are working properly. If possible, bring someone along for a second opinion. This could be a salesperson, spouse or friend. Many times people become intensely focused on buying a particular car based solely on its aesthetic appeal. Try to keep in mind that what matters most is how safe the car is, not the look of it. Having someone in the passenger seat when test driving a car should help the buyer keep this in mind.

Winston, a 7 year old neutered male Schnauzer mix, is as cheerful as he is fluffy. This mature boy has a gentle, confident nature while still being very playful. He’d love to make his furever home with you. He is one of our many pets eligible for a “Senior for Senior” adoption discount. Hard to believe, but someone abandoned this little cutie with several others out by our dumpster one chilly night. The APF still has many kittens, not to mention over 50 cats up for adoption right now, so please stop by and meet 3 month old neutered male, Snickers and his many friends looking for new homes. The APF is now open Thursday evenings till 7:30 pm for adoptions.
