23 November 2009 The Kellogg School Of Science and Technology The Scripps Research Institute 10550 N Torrey Pines Road, TPC-19 La Jolla, CA 92037 [email protected] To Whom It May Concern: I am a Staff Scientist in the lab of Dr. John Elder at the Scripps Research Institute, and have known Elizabeth Fink as a research technician since June of 2007. She is always positive and enthusiastic about her work. Elizabeth is very proficient in a number of molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. She isn’t afraid to ask questions regarding the purpose of an experiment or for clarification of directions, and is constantly seeking to improve her knowledge and skill set. She is incredibly committed to becoming a scientist and is always eager to participate in discussions involving not just what she is working on, but the bigger picture as well. Her comprehensive abilities are significantly greater than her peers and she is already working on her own projects, where she designs and executes experiments with limited supervision, and is working towards getting her results published. She works well independently and as part of team. She is always courteous, professional and patient with others and has the utmost respect for her peers and colleagues in the lab. The new post-doctoral researchers in the lab have benefited just as much from her experience as she has from theirs. I am confident in her abilities, and rely on her to guide the less experienced members of our lab (such as the new technicians, and rotation students) in the protocols that we use. She has developed a number of protocols for the lab and is constantly looking for new techniques that will help improve our research. Elizabeth introduced the siRNA techniques to our lab and now the post-doctoral researchers are using them. In my opinion, Elizabeth has been an integral part of the Elder lab and will make an excellent graduate student. With her drive, patience, and outstanding lab skills, she has excellent potential and I know she will contribute greatly to the scientific community. Sincerely,

Ying-Chuan Lin, Ph.D. Staff Scientist The Scripps Research Institute 10550 N Torrey Pines Road, MB-14 La Jolla, CA 92037 (858) 784-9707
