Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door by David Kaufman While Day symbolized virtuous America to the rest of the world—especially in her heyday, the 1950s and early 1960s—both she and that era are still perceived as being far more innocent and carefree than they really were. Indeed, what makes Day’s story so richly fascinating is the fact that she was in many ways the opposite of her image as “the girl next door.”

What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception by Scott McClellan In this refreshingly clear-eyed book, written with no agenda other than to record his experiences and insights for the benefit of history, McClellan provides unique perspective on what happened and why it happened the way it did, including the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina, Washington’s bitter partisanship, and two hotly contested presidential campaigns.

Damage Control by J. A. Jance Joanne Brady is the Sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, a mother and a wife, but daily she struggles to maintain a balance between her three major roles. One long weekend stretches the resources of her department to the limit.

Sinner by Ted Dekker The story takes place in the near future and tells of how our country comes to despise those who follow Jesus. Set against this backdrop come three very gifted individuals; one from the desert, one from the city and one from a small town. They’ll forever change the world.

A Lady of Secret Devotion by Tracie Peterson Cassandra Stover can't believe her luck when she becomes the companion to Mrs. Jameston, a wealthy society woman. Not only can she help her widowed mother and sister, but Cassie genuinely comes to care for the elderly woman who treats her like family. Enter Mark Langford, an insurance investigator, and everything changes for her.

Hot Mahogany by Stuart Woods As always, a Stuart Woods novel is a special treat. From the opening page, action begins and never stops keeping the reader on the edge of their seat, whether Stone dodges a lover or someone trying to end his investigation. Though in this thriller Stone is much more sleuth than lawyer, fans will enjoy Stone’s look at the dangerous world of antique sales.

Black Wave: A Family’s Adventure at Sea and the Disaster That Saved Them by John and Jean Silverwood Just as it seemed to the Silverwoods that they had mastered every challenge the sea could bring, their world was shattered in a split-second of unimaginable horror. Now their real challenge began, forcing them to fight for their very lives.

Rough Justice by Jack Higgins Suspense grandmaster Jack Higgins writes another fascinating tense thriller that is loaded with action. Yet with all the non-stop action, the story line also contains the political realities of the world today with insight into Muslim fundamentalists, Russia’s efforts to return to superpower status, the NATO response, and the fragile peace in places like Northern Ireland.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames By David Sedaris The author’s ability to transform the mortification of everyday life into wildly amusing art is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever in this remarkable new book.

Screen Doors and Sweet Tea by Martha Hall Foose The lady knows Southern food! The book is a must-have for the home cook -- and a must read for anyone who craves a return to what real food is all about -- comfort, conversation at the table, and really, really good eats.
