Happy 4th of July... Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country. The Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and appointed a committee to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had

decided to govern themselves. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and it was approved by all the members of Congress. They revised the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776, then officially adopted it on July 4, 1776.

Congress ordered that all members sign the Declaration of Independence. The next January, Congress sent signed copies to all the states. This document is not just a piece of paper, but a symbol of our country’s independence and commitment to certain ideals.

Magazine Rack... “The Buzz on Native Pollinators” in National Wildlife discusses the decline of the honeybees and other pollinating animals. Scientists estimate that in the United States alone, native bees perform as much as 3 billion worth of pollination services annually. It also illuminates what all of us can do to conserve the pollinators in your back yard.

In case you missed it, in National Review (June 8, 2009) is an article about our own Indiana governor Mitch Daniels including a picture of him on the front cover of the magazine. “Mitch the Knife” is described as ‘The Blade’ . It is an interesting article and should be read by all Hoosiers—a good opportunity to get to know your governor.

Mother Earth News has an article that offers 35 tips to help you handle pest control, weeding and other peak summer garden chores. “Keeping Up with Your Garden” is good for those gardeners who like to plant rather than pick. You can use the guidelines in this article to keep your garden working efficiently.

computers. If you want to know the most common and unusual phobias, the most borrowed and the most translated authors or the leading chocolate consumers and the most overweight countries—this is the book for you!
