• Growth rate - peak in the early 1960s due to reductions in mortality. • Slowed down due to 1. Rising age at marriage 2. Increasing availability and use of effective contraceptive methods.
The annual increase in world population peaked at about 88 million in the late 1980s. The peak occurred then, even though annual growth rates were past their peak in the late 1960s, because the world population was higher in the 1980s than in the 1960s.

World Population Day, 2008 •Theme- “Family Planning: It’s a Right; Let’s Make it Real”,
Maternal mortality is defined as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days after termination of pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management. This includes death as a complication of abortion at any stage of pregnancy.
