Charles Richard Drew

Charles Drew was born in Washington on June 3, 1904 to Richard and Nora Drew. He was the oldest of five children. As a student Drew was good in academic sports, at the age of eight he won four gold medals in swimming. In 1922 he gradated from Laurence Dunbar high school. Charles received the James memorial in his junior and senior year for his athletic performance in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He attended Amherst College where he became an all- American in football as a halfback. He was the member of the Omega PSI PHI Fraternity. Two years later he worked as an athletic director, football coach, and science teacher at Morgan state university in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1928 he entered a medical school at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. Later he joined a British professor named Dr.John Battle in blood researched. His researched continued as an intern at Montréal general hospital. Drew received a fellow ship from Howard university medical school. When he was at Columbia University Dr.Charles Drew worked with Dr. Allen Whipple and Dr.John scudder on the problem of blood storage. Charles Richard Drew was an American medical doctor and surgeon who started the idea of a blood bank and a system for long term preservation of first blood bank in the 1930s. In 1939 world two broke out in

Europe. By 1940 the Britain with the help of them turning to the United States. With the need of blood to save the lives of wounded soldiers. The blood transfusion association chose Drew as the medical supervisor of the blood for Britain program. In 1950 Charles Richard Drew died in a car accident. His life could have been saving but due to discrimination with the white hospital nearby did not give him the blood transfusion he needed.

REFLECTION

the fist blood bank in the early 1930s and came up with and idea to save people by giving blood to them. This was known as blood transfusion. A blood bank was for a place where blood or blood plasma is collected, processed, stored, and distributed. Blood transfusion was the process of giving blood to someone through the veins during an operation. This process could only happen if you and the other person donating blood had the same type of blood as you did. In world was II Charles drew was the one who save all those people lives who were wounded and hurt at that time. Due to that Charles drew save many lives by doing blood transfusion. He was rewarded many awards for what he did. Charles also started the first Red Cross. An international organization that cares for the wounded, sick, and homeless in wartime, according to the terms of the Geneva Convention of 1864, and now also during and following natural disasters. After many years Charles r. drew was in a serious car accident. The wanted to take him to a colored hospital by there were only hospitals by to care for him. Because of

segregation was still going on at that time Charles died because nobody treated his injury and loss to much blood.
