WORKING OUTLINE INSTRUCTIONS Use a separate sheet of paper for each section of the research paper. For each page, include the following: •

Write a statement that tells the purpose (focus) of that section. 1. Make your point. 2. Follow with the card number(s) of the quote, summary or paraphrase that supports that point. 3. Comment on or explain the connection between your quote and the point you are making.



Repeat steps 1-3 until you have thoroughly supported the focus of the section



Use paper clips to attach the note cards used for that section.



Repeat the above for each section of the paper.



Fold pages in thirds around the cards and rubber band to hold it all together. FORMAT

SAMPLE WORKING OUTLINE SECTION The following is a sample section of a working outline. This is page three of a working outline for a paper on “Junioritis.” III. Although it my be tempting to slack off at the end of the school year for a variety of reasons, one pressing reason to “hang in there” is the fact that those all-important SAT’s are coming up. A. Raising writing scores 1. Types of writing prompts # 16, # 12, # 21 2. Practicing essays # 5, # 11 3. Using the time remaining in the school year to practice writing skills can go a long way to improve writing scores. B. Improving vocabulary 1. Taking vocabulary work seriously # 7 2. Using new Vocabulary every day # 3, # 8 3. If the habit is developed in the last weeks of school, it may carry over to the summer months so new vocabulary is not forgotten C. Commercial preparation programs 1. How effective # 18, # 20, # 25 2. When is the best time # 22 3. Practicing what you learn # 23, # 24 4. This is a good time to take an SAT preparation course because the summer months can provide time for reviewing and practicing before school starts again.
