1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND
ECOTEL stands for environment friendly hotels. The ecotel collection is a group of hotels since 1994 (17 in Asia continent as of 2009) that focuses on standards of environmental responsibility in the hospitality industry and excellence of hotels. It is an innovative, socially conscious concept, a hotel that is committed to enhancing the guest experience while setting a new standard of environmental responsibility. The ecotel collection has developed and updated an environmental certification program for hotels called ecotel certification. The certification is based on 5 environmental areas, each of which is designated by a globe. The five globes are:
Ecotel is a new concept in hospitality that claims to work for environment protection and preservation. All eco-certified hotels must pass a detailed inspection and satisfy stringent criteria designed by environmental experts. The first Ecotel certified hotel was hotel NEW YORK VISTA in the year 1994. Facilities provided may range from a modest-quality mattress in a small room to large suites With bigger, higher-quality beds, a dresser, a fridge and other kitchen facilities, upholstered chairs, a flat screen television and spacious bathrooms. Small, lower-priced hotels may offer only the most basic guest services and facilities. Larger, higher-priced hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business center (with computers, printers and other office equipment), childcare, conference and event facilities, tennis or basketball courts, gymnasium, restaurants, day spa and social function services Ecotel hotels are defined as “a hotel or accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the environment”.
It is a new concept in hospitality that claims to work for environment protection and preservation. Eco hotels is above normal hotels because the Eco hotels contribute less amount of greenhouse gases to Atmosphere when compared to normal hotels. The Ecotel has better features like Solar Panels to generate electricity, Rainwater Harvesting system to supply water for toilet or plant trees, Roof Garden rick in shrubbery to provide extra insulation, Wind power to generate electricity for hotel, use of Recycled materials etc. They give more emphasis on environment friendly aspects. Ecotel hotels use products that are environment friendly and cause minimal harm to the environment In ecotel hotels the waste, which is generated, is segregated as dry and wet garbage and is recycled and used properly. Ecotel hotels are constructed keeping in mind their eco norms. Ecotel hotels are also called as eco-friendly hotels as they help in ecological balance. The five criteria for Ecotel certification which needed to be fulfilled are:
1 . Environmental Commitment 2 . Solid Waste Management 3 . Energy Efficiency 4 . Water Conservation 5 . Employee Environmental Education & Community Involvement.
1.2. Specific Background The project is proposed to be done in Adama Ethiopia. Adama City is located at some 100 kilometers from Finfinne, on the southeast along the main road to Harar. longitude . Adama lies in somewhat warm and lower badda dare climate. Hence, it enjoys hot and dry weather for the grater part of the winter and warm and sunny climate in summer. Thus, the area is generally, known for its attractive weekends and summer resort release. The existing situation indicates that most of commercial activities are concentrated in Gandas 20 and 07. The Gimb main market, business shops, government and private banks, major hotels, etc. are all congested on and around the main streets on Finfinne—Harar main road. There is only one sub market on Amede area, this too is located on the main road, although a bit far off. In general, the centres and market places appear to have been disorganised, contributing to the imbalanced development of the city. There are a lot of hotels, restaurants, bars, night clubs and cafes in the city and modern resort centres at short distance from the city; notably Sodere hot spring spa at 24 k.m and Atlas resort at 65 k.m and more others. Adama is situated within the Wonji Fault Belt, in the main structural systems of the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Geological studies indicate that the present physiography of the area is the result of volcano-tectonic activities occurred in the past and thus deposition of sediment largely of fluvial and lacustraine origin. Therefore, the main landscape in Adama and its surrounding consists of fault scraps and fault controlled depressions covered with sediments and volcanic domes and cones. The study further points out that the major proportion of the City lies in a relatively low lying flat land (within 1 to 10% slope) between two mountain ridges, at an average altitude ranging between 1600 and 1800 meters above sea level (masl). 2. Statement of the Problem
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE The objectives to make the building ECOTEL are: • Commit to place sustainable development issues at the core of the management Structure. • To design keeping in mind the natural conditions of the site, with out disturbing the ecosystem to a greater extent. • Proper orientation of activities studying the climatological aspects of the site. • The most important design aspect is to create landscaped terrace courtyards which will help on Conserving energy. • The building should have proper insulation to make good thermal comforts, to reduce noise pollution and avoid dust filtration. • Use of geothermal air conditioning for all the spaces to save energy and avoid green house gas emissions. •.Use of photo voltaic cells to generate electricity., Water-heating etc. •Rainwater harvesting , reducing water use and wastewater output. • Reducing solid waste output, ensuring that waste generated is kept to a minimum and disposed of in an environmentally sound way; • Purchasing environment-preferable products from local enterprises.
