2009-2010 —The Pros and Cons of This School Year By Karina Keefe and Sarah Schoepp We all know that every year is different, but how different is this one going to be?

-You only have one PAWS, and you have it more often for a longer amount of time (this could also be a bad thing)

Spiffy :) (Everybody CHEER) -Allowed to chew gum (most of the time) -There were more elective choices this year -PAWS is limited to your grade (that could be a bad thing, though)

Horrendous:( (Everybody BOO) -Less times for lockers -PAWS choices are limited to your grade (Also a good thing) -One PAWS, more often and for a longer amount of the year (which could

be a good thing) -The new dismissal time (ten minutes later than last year) -New pinnacle passwords -Electives and gym are at different times than they were the other years -Lunch is at different times than it was the other years -New and “improved” dress code—no wristbands, gloves, chains, safety pins…

ADVICE COLUMN Submit your letters in a locker with a yellow poster and we will give you advice!!!

Hey, this is J from ASK JEL- the school’s advice column. We will feature problems addressed by students and respond with advice from each member of JEL. There might even be some spiffy guest stars! All problems are completely confidential and anonymous. Just write down your questions or concerns and drop it through the slots of a JEL lockers in each of the hallways. There should be a yellow poster on it! Finally, look for what you wrote and our responses every month at our advice column, ASK JEL. Everyone at JEL is looking forward to seeing your problems (and helping them)! Love, Yo Fran J

Ask JEL Advice Column Thank you to everyone who gave us questions, we really appreciate you getting us started! Here are some questions that have been asked: Dear JEL, I like school a lot more than I thought I would, but I feel like it’s almost impossible for me to make any friends. Please help!!

Sincerely,

Lonely Lenny Dear Lonely Lenny, It is good to hear that you are enjoying Middle School; it’s definitely different from elementary school. Making friends is hard for many people for sure, I know that personally. Some things that have helped me are to take a look around. Look for someone you might not have

take a look around. Look for someone you might not have noticed before. Start asking them questions and see if they have anything in common with you. I know that if you are not very social, this can be tough. Don’t worry, it’s worth it in the end. Another thing is to smile. Smile and say hi to every person you know and try to make conversations during class. People will almost have no choice but to like you if you are so all smiles and kindness to them. If it looks like someone is having a hard day you can ask them what’s wrong and offer to help. They’ll be glad to have someone who cares! Sincerely, E. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4.

Did you want to go to TJ High? From the features and editorials crew I certainly wanted to, but that was never an option for me. However, if you live in Dearbought or Waterside, or really just outside the technical boundaries of Walkersville, it was an option for you, actually a requirement until recently. But now, you’re all going to Walkersville High. Most students who might have gone to TJ say that they have mixed feelings about it. TJ offers more classes, and they have a great music program. There are classes with a higher intrigue, and the school is bigger. It might also be a nice change for some people. One student, who says she’s never really moved, thought it would be nice to have that experience of a fresh start at a new school. On the other hand, after attending school with the same people every day for three years, it might be frightening to leave. And wouldn’t you miss us? Walkersville High holds the Engineering program for the county. They also have an annual ceremony to honor students with a 4.0 GPA each year, and then to students who had a 3.5 GPA or better. No other school in the state holds that ceremony, and Walkersville takes pride for their honored students. It’s your opinion on whether or not you’d like to go to TJ High, and just letting everyone know, you still can. It’s a public school, so you have the right to go there if you really want to. But Walkersville High will offer bus transportation, good friends you’ve known forever, and a great Engineering program. If you really want to go out of your way to go to TJ High, that’s fine. But if you really, REALLY want to go out of your way to jump off a bridge, that will be fine, too. Your choice.

Dear JEL, I might be losing a friend. He says he’s still my friend, but his other friend says I’m not. What should I do? ~Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Losing friends is one of the hardest things in the world. I remember when I entered Middle School I lost some friends I thought I would be life long friends with. Eventually I had to realize that it was time to move on. This may or may not be your case. If it is, begin looking for other people you could be friends with. When you see your not-so-much-a-friend, smile, say hi, and be nice but do nothing else. Revenge or even continuing your old friendship may not be necessary. Don’t worry about him anymore. In life, many people go their separate ways. Wishing you the best of luck, E Hey! This is J speaking. Okay, first of all, let me just say that his friend doesn’t know how your friendship is. Try to get to know your friend better. Start conversations with him, invite him or her over, etc… Before you know it, you guys will be close friends. You don’t even need to ask your friend if he is really your friend. You can just feel it without affirmation! YEAH! And if he tries to give you the cold shoulder, he isn’t worth it. Love, J
