Introduction On April 1997, almost 17 years after I started preaching the gospel inside buses, vans, trains, boats and airplanes, I was on vacation to write about such ministry. However, I became convinced that what will be used at least in the Philippines is not what I was using nor was it something from another country. So I canceled writing such book. I then read books and attended trainings on more effective means of evangelism. I got excited with prayer evangelism by Ed Silvoso with which all churches in Resistencia grew five times in two and a half years. I had a godly jealousy over G12 model in Colombia where in at that time, one church grew from 70 to 20,000 small groups in 8 years! I bought all I could from the Singaporean model as taught by Ralph Neighbor. I sought to be a “scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven … who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.” (Matthew 13:52 NAS). I combined my past knowledge and skills from my personal studies since I trusted in Jesus in 1979, Campus Crusade, Navigators with the new things I was beginning to learn. I also sought to practice immediately and teach what I was learning and saw improved results: •

Greater percentage indicated they prayed to receive Christ. For example, last Dec. 27-30, 2002, at the conclusion of our training, 64 youths of an old denomination in Isabela led 104 out of 106 to receive Christ.

Greater percentage got absorbed in churches among those who receive Christ. For instance, in one church in Quezon City where we conducted a Sunday training in January 2000, the church became excited about witnessing and planted 30 churches in 6 years. One whom I pushed to witness for the first time in that day soon became a pastor.

Lives were transformed. In 2003, I shared the gospel to the girlfriend with whom a professed Christian committed premarital sex. Then I preached the gospel in their wedding ceremony. That couple led 2 other live-in couples to attend my Bible study. I later preached the gospel again in the wedding ceremony of one of those couples.

What you have in your hand is what I believe to be a first part to a better approach to evangelism than preaching in public utility cars. It is fasting and prayer to begin reaching out to a place beginning with a son or sons of peace. It illustrates what all that I learned in the past 27 years as an evangelist. I pray that it will equip you (Ephesians 4:11-16) to do the work of an evangelist (2Timothy 4:5)--to help preach the gospel to all men in the power of the Holy Spirit (Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1:8) with all wisdom (Colossians 1:28-29) that you can help save as many as possible (1Corinthians 9:19-23), to the glory of God!

Interceding for New Berea

'This morning, as I was spending time with God,' remarks Pol, 'I became convinced that it is God's will for us to go to New Berea (Ps 81:13a; Mic 6:9a) and liberate it from the demonic spirits that have controlled it!' Tim replies, ‘I remember a missionary team was in a country where Christians were known to be killed or raped by the dominant religious group in that country. At that time, a similar plan was made beginning from that religion’s temple. The leader decided to lead his team in intercession on site. They went around the temple area (cf. Jos 6:9-26) and declared in prayer that they were pulling down the stronghold of anger and were planting love instead. They also asked God to send angels to guard the temple area… ‘The following day, the temple area were surrounded by the police that the those who joined the rally were not able to enter the place. They instead met in another place. When the speaker who were not from that place asked people to donate for their ‘brothers’ who they claimed were mistreated by Christians, they ran away from the offering basket! When he asked who would be willing to give their lives for their cause, none volunteered. As a result, it did not happen as it did in another island where people gave their lives for that religion’s cause, got demon-possessed as a group, burned houses, killed Christians and even raped some! The missionary team was spared from such evil partly because they listened to the word of the Lord for their situation!’ 'I also know of another who attended a seminar and waged war by himself and got boils all over his body! I think we need to first wait for "the word of the Lord" on what to do. On it depend lives-of others and even of ours (1Ki 13:2, 9, 17-26)!' 'You are right,' affirms Pol, 'we need to wait for the word of the Lord. However, we need not fear Satan. Instead, we are to fear God. That is the beginning of wisdom (Pr 9:10) with which to deliver the city (Ec 9:15). I asked God for ability to judge myself and my ways rightly (1Co 11:31; Hag 1:5; Ps 139:23-24). God convicted me of the sin of not taking the place where I lived to heart (Je 12:10-11). I did not pray for and sought its peace (Je 29:7). After confessing that sin, I claimed God's forgiveness (1Jn 1:82:2). Tim, are you also sure there is no unconfessed sin in your life?' 'After some moments of silence, Tim says, 'I know of nothing else remaining at this time!' How about you, my dear reader? Do you desire to see a place freed

6

from sin and the demonic forces that have controlled it? … God wants those who have His image to subdue it and have dominion over every living thing in it (Ge 1:26-28). Is God revealing a sin to your mind right now that mars His image in you? … If so, confess it. … Do you need resources to accomplish what God is asking you to do? If so, ask the Owner for them (Ps 24:1). 'What about Demie?' asked Tim. Pol replies, 'Well, you know how bold he was (De 20:8 Judg 7:3). He makes sure that he has no unconfessed sins (Jos 7:1ff). He is full of the Holy Spirit (Lu 4:18,19) and of faith (Ac 11:24 Nu 13:30 14:6-9). But he is preparing for marriage, so he cannot join us now (1Co 12:21; De 20:4-7). So let us not judge him since he cannot join us now (1Co 4:3-5).' Though you do God’s will for your life, have you compared yourself with others?... Have you judged those who do not follow your ways?... 'Okay then, when do we go?' 'This Saturday. Are you available to prayerfully research with me the sins of the people of New Berea (Ne 1:6 Da 9:5; Eze 22:23-30) that defile the land (Je 2:7 Ezr 9:10,11)?' So that Saturday, the two went to New Berea. Walking around it (Josh 6:2-3), Pol encourages Tim. ‘Let God be enthroned through our praises (Ps 22:3).’ ‘Father, thank You that You are love (1Jo 4:8),’ Tim prays. ‘You do not want anyone in New Berea to perish (2Pe 3:9).’ ‘You also more than able to do that in spite of many hindrances Satan have laid along the way!’ adds Pol. Tim smiles and worships God, ‘You also make everything beautiful in its time.’ Pol prays, 'God, you have determined men's appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings that they should seek and find the Lord (Ac 17:26). I believe that now is the time for them to seek and find You. Teach us to understand what we should do (1Ch 12:32).' 'Father, thank You for setting us free from sin and Satan to declare Your glory and gospel here (Is 66:18-19; Mt 24:14),' adds Tim. 'Yes God, give this place to us as our inheritance (Ps 2:8),' continues Pol. 'Just as John Knox prayed, "Give me Scotland or give me death," I now ask you to give us your love for New Berea that we can say from our hearts,

7

"Give us New Berea or give us death." (Ex 32:32).' 'Yes Lord, I agree!' declares Tim. 'Since you make your secrets and covenants to those who fear You (Ps 25:14), guide us to those who fear You that we may know Your secret plan for New Berea (Jer 33:3; Dan 2:22).' Do you fear God? … Do you exchange revelations with others who fear Him? … or do you act as if you are the only one who received revelation from God? … Have you asked God to reveal to you His secrets concerning the people you are seeking to reach? As they were walking and praying, they noticed that there are different religions who have established themselves in New Berea. 'I pray LORD that you open their eyes that they may believe in the Truth whom we will be presenting to them,' prayed Tim. 'I agree,' agrees Pol, 'If there were missionaries or people who lived here and have told of God's agreement or covenant with them about the place (Ps 25:14), let us know Lord.' 'Let's try this house, Tim,' invites Pol. With Tim following him, Pol knocked at a house, 'Good morning ma'am!' … The woman reflects peace in his face (Luke 10:6). So Pol continues, '… I am Pol and this is Tim. Your name is…?' 'Precy,' is her response. So Pol explains, 'we attended a seminar and one of the things we are asked to do is pray for people in this place. Can we pray for you?' 'Sure! … Please come in!' Inside the house, without asking for any request from Precy, Pol prayed, 'Father, I pray that you would provide for any need that Precy and her family has--whether it be a means of livelihood or healing for anyone who may be sick. Draw them close to you too. In Jesus' name I pray.' 'Amen!' Precy agrees. 'When we prayed,' ask Pol, 'Did you feel that God is with us?' 'Yes, I did! … In fact this is an answer to prayer! …' Pol and Tim looked at each other in amazement. 'Just before you came,' explains Precy, 'I prayed that God will fulfill his promise to his children who came here 20 years ago. Two ladies came here and taught us Bible lessons. I was 10 years then and I trusted Christ to save me from my sins. During that time, I heard from them that God promised them that this place would be a center where people in the world would be reached through mass media. What vision do you have for the place where God assigned you? ... “Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained...” (Pr 29:18 NAS)

8

‘But then,' continues Precy, 'my uncle who was a quack doctor and his friend courted them. Those ladies fell in love with them and left suddenly after some time. So our Bible study was stopped. My friends and I wondered what happened.' Is there something that has hindered you from accomplishing God’s perfect will for your life? ... Ask God to remove it! 'Soon after they left, my mother noticed the moral degradation in this place (Jer 2:3). Married people were separated from their spouses. As a result, those who worked abroad or remained here started to have other partners. Young people started to have premarital sex. Homosexuals and lesbians has increased in number. Corruption is everywhere that it is so difficult to process papers in the government offices without giving bribe money to those who are so-called public servants. At 20 years of age, I got married to someone of the same religion as my parents. The following year, I started to watch television broadcasts from different groups each of which claim that they are the true religion. I remembered those times that those ladies were teaching us. I was feeling in my heart that they were teaching the truth. So I looked for the Bible the ladies gave me and started to read them. I also started to pray that God would bring to this place people like those ladies!' With tears in his eyes, Pol said, 'You are exactly one of the people we are looking for! What you just shared show how God worked on New Berea in the past years (Judg 2:10). God's promises are still on effect (Ps 103:17-18). God remembers the covenant He made with those ladies (Jer 14:21; Ps 106:45)! So it is time for us to finish what those ladies started. You can help us by giving some information. Is that okay? …' Precy nods. 'In Jerusalem, God appointed watchmen (Is 62:6-7). You could be one of those whom God has appointed for New Berea. In the time of Joshua, there were men of war and "seven priests" who were to "carry seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark" (Jos 6:4a). Now, there are elders who are men of spiritual war or priests-interceding for souls. They are called elders of New Berea (Tit 1:5). 'Do you know of others praying like you or preaching or teaching like those ladies who are still in this city?' asked Tim. 'Sorry, but I know of no one else!' replies Precy. Do you know of others who also are burdened for the place you want to reach for the LORD? ... Have you tried to contact them? ... Pol explains, 'Just as God gave Jericho with its king and its valiant warriors to Israel (Joshua 6:2), so God gave to those ladies and now to you

9

and us New Berea and its principality (ruling spirit) and the demons working with it.' 'You mean you can win over them?' asks Precy. 'Because we are in Christ Jesus as evidenced by our changed lives (2Corinthians 5:17), the blessing of Abraham has come to us (Ga 3:14,29), we can possess the gates of our enemies (Genesis 22:15-18), the demonic forces we encounter (Eph 6:10-12). By asking Jesus to use His keys to close the gates of Hades, those shall not prevail against us (Mt 16:18),' affirms Pol, '… if we walk in his ways (Ps 81:13b-14), in His strategy.' 'How?' Pol continues, 'A map was used by Ezekiel for spiritual purposes (Eze 4:1-3). Therefore, we are seeking knowledge of the place (Pr 15:14) by looking for people (preferably older ones) who may be able to provide us copies of the maps of the place or the plan for the building. A map or a building plan is God's property also (1Co 10:26). Do you know of a city librarian or building administrator of a museum or of a historical building?' 'My mother works for the city museum,' replies Precy, 'I can get us a copy of the city plan! Come back two days from now and I'll give you a copy.' --oOo-Two days later, Pol receives the map from Precy. 'Did you get sick these past two days?' asks Precy. Pol replies with a smile, 'No. But thanks for your concern.' 'Yes, you got a little thinner!' observes Tim. So Pol explained to him privately, 'Actually, I fasted that I can help raise up the foundations of this place (Is 58:12).' Pol explains, 'Boundaries are set by God that the peoples seek God at their appointed times (Ac 17:26,27; De 32:8). What do you notice in the boundaries of the map, Tim?' 'The shrines of different religions are located in high places, on this mountain and on this other hill and near the river (De 12:2,3)!' observes Tim. 'Father,' prays Pol, 'restore your purposes for the mountains and the hills of New Berea, that it will now bring peace instead of curses (Ps 72:3).' 'Yes Lord!' agrees Tim. ‘Instead of invoking the names of other gods (Jos 23:7 NIV), work in this land that they will invoke Your name alone. Instead of participating in a demonic sacrifice (1Co 10:20 2Ki 17:17 21:6 2Ch 33:6), may they participate in sacrifice of praise to You.' Pol explains to Tim, 'The name of the place may tell something significant about its history (just as “So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the LORD it will be

10

provided.'”Ge 22:14). Come with me, let us ask Precy.' 'Precy,' asks Pol, 'may I ask you some further questions?' 'Sure!' 'Why is this place called "New Berea"?' 'Those who founded this place were Protestants. They found that the people gladly heard what they preached. The people also examined the Scriptures daily to see whether those things were so. So the Protestants named it "New Berea" (Ac 17:10,11).' 'If that is so, why are there so many religions in New Berea?' asks Tim. Precy answers, 'Though the people like to test everything they hear from the Bible, the people here have become so proud of the knowledge they have.' 'I notice that the people here have problem with pride,' Pol adds, 'When I examined some of the objects of their worship (Ac 17:23), I noticed a huge image of a man surrounded by many books and some are worshiping that image! I asked the meaning of his name and they told me his name means Knowledge.' 'Besides that idol of knowledge,' Tim adds, 'they also worship here the "queen of heaven" (Je 7:16-20). ‘There is one religious and government leader who has performed signs and wonders that people are afraid to talk against him and some speak flattering words in his presence like what some did before Herod (Ac 12:2024). In fact, one of his leaders told me that he is God the Son (Eze 28:2,12) and his father is God the Father! Their followers even built an altar (De 12:2,3) and a monument for the corpse (Is 65:4; Eze 43:7,9 NAS) of his father, the founder of their religion. Abraham built an altar when he came to the Promised Land (Ge 12:8), thereby including the land in the covenant between God and His people. In the same way, when the followers of that religion built an altar to his father, they covenanted the land to him and to the dark angels behind him (Kjell Sjoberg, p.111 of Peter Wagner's Breaking Strongholds in Your City). Thai is why we should first win with the angels the battle in the heavens (Judg 5:20).' 'I heard of one like him,’ remarked Pol. ‘A believer went to teach a government official’s daughter. When he arrived home, they were praying. Trembling, he said, "That is what I want--that truth will be known!" Soon, the official was convicted of multiple murders and rapes!’ ‘Those murders polluted the land (Nu 35:31,33; 2Sa 21:1)!’ exclaims Tim. ‘Murder has also become a problem here in New Berea,’ adds Precy. ‘I also sensed that there is low morality in this place when I saw the sensual art that they have in museums, parks, theaters, archeological sites and malls (Ac 17:29),’ confessed Pol.

11

‘You are right,’ affirms Precy, ‘morals have gone low here. Partly because the poor were not sufficiently helped (Eze 22:29-31), prostitution has increased. Lest I add my prejudices (Nu 13:27-28 De 1:28), let me say that, in fairness, the government has done some attempts to help liberate those who were forced into prostitution.’ ‘I think with this survey of the place, we can now begin to wage war (Eze 4:2-3). We shall walk over the place and claim it (De 11:24; Jos 6:3-5). Since you know better the sins of New Berea and can represent them better, would you like to join us Precy as we pray around this place?’ ‘Sure!’ When they arrived at the nearest altar, Pol pulled a weed to gesture what he believes to be true spiritually. He prayed, ‘Father, thank you that you have called us to uproot, tear down, destroy and overthrow (Je 1:10a) the works of Satan and his demons-our enemies (Ep 6:12). Cause us to discern the sins of the place that Your wrath may be turned away from it as we confess them (Ezr 9:5-15 Ne 1:6 Da 9:5).’ Encouraged by Tim, Precy prays, ‘Father, forgive us that we have worshipped the queen of heaven and other false gods. Since we served idols which cannot see, hear nor speak, we just sinned and were not rebuked (Ps 115:4-8). We lowered our moral standards. I kept silent when I saw crime was done because I wanted to protect myself. … ’ Pol becomes bold, ‘We declare to the spirit of murder in this place that since the Spirit is in us, and “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2Co 3:17), we are now planting liberty to replace murder in this place’. ‘Lord,’ worships Tim, ‘though sins were committed in this place, you have been in control. You were not surprised by what happened.’ Pol prays, ‘Father, thank you that we are co-seated with Jesus Christ far above all demonic spirits (Ep 1:18-22; 2:6). On this basis, in Jesus’ name, we bind the strong man (Mt 12:29 Mk 3:27 Lu 11:21,22), Satan, and ask him to stop veiling the minds of the unbelieving (2Co 4:4) in New Berea now that time has come for them to seek the Lord (Ac 17:26-27). God is not glorified if when we do His work, our loved ones and even our properties are harmed. Therefore, we also forbid him in Jesus’ name from inflicting any harm over them. Lord, cause our loved ones to make You their dwelling place that You can send angels to guard them in all their ways (Ps 91:9,11). ‘In Jesus’ name, we uproot the pursuit of knowledge without obedience to the true God for it causes one to become arrogant (1Co 8:1 NKJ). Instead, we plant (Je 1:10b Is 62:10) the fear God that is the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10).’ ‘Amen!’ exclaims Tim and Precy. Tim asks Pol, ‘Can we just tear down the idols in this place as Gideon did

12

in Ju 6:25-27?’ ‘If God clearly tells us as He did to Gideon,’ Pol explains. ‘Otherwise, we are to follow the instruction that we are to give no offense to anyone (1Co 10:32). The same can be said about driving stakes at the boundaries of the place (Is 33:20-24) or declaring something to the mountains in this place (Zec 4:7).’ ‘Are there other things we need to do?’ asks Precy? ‘We can also do good things opposite the sin or condition which controls the people of the place (Ro 12:21)’ replies Pol. ‘For example, since poverty have caused some to steal, kill and commit prostitution, we can combat it by following the example of the pastors in Resistencia, Argentina who built "16 water tanks in slum areas where there was no running water" (p. 245, Silvoso, ibid.)’ ‘God, enable us to do something similar in the near future! Enable us to help restore the hearts of the fathers who went abroad to their children that you need strike New Berea with a curse because of adultery and fornication that resulted from them (Mal 4:6)’ prays Tim. ‘Amen!’ agrees Pol and Precy. Pol continues to pray, ‘As we meet people in this place publicly and from house to house (Ac 5:42; 20:20), enable us to prayerfully share the gospel (Ep 6:15,19) and teach obedience to all of Christ's commands (Mt 28:19). As we meet believers in this place, enable us to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ep 4:3; Mt 18:15-35; 5:21-26). As we speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15) with which Christ and the Father loves us (Rom 5:8; John 17:23), enable us to help mend the saints that we can be united also in doctrine—in the knowledge of the Son of God—and in becoming like Christ (Eph 4:11-14) especially in loving one another as Christ loves us (Jn 13;3435; Eph 4:15). We desire to see the full realization of Jesus' prayer for unity (Jn 17:20-23). Then, as we preach the gospel (Mr 16:15) and teach (Mt 28:18-20), we shall expect men to be saved (Jn 13:34,35; 17:20-24; 1Ti 2:18). We ask all these things in Jesus’ name!’ Do you desire to reach a place for Jesus Christ? ... If so, seek to follow the example given in this booklet. ...

Fasting as God Expects

'Did you miss breakfast today?' asked Pol' 'I sure did!' replied Tim. 'I'm glad you are obedient to me in everything!', remarks Pol. 'Of course! You persuade me by example that fasting is good.' explains Tim. 'But I have a question. First, ‘DO I HAVE TO FAST?’ Pol explains, ‘Yes. God expects you to fast. Notice that in Matthew 6:1617, Jesus did not say, "If you fast" but "when you fast:" It is not an option but something expected of true believers.’ ‘But I don't want to be a hypocrite like the Pharisees!’ says Tim. ‘Then you fast not to be seen by men but for God (Ac 13:2 Zec 7:5).’ ‘But ISN'T FASTING ONLY FOR THE OLD TESTAMENT BELIEVERS?’ asks Precy. ‘No, it is expected of all Christians before Jesus comes again. Wonder is seen in Precy’s face. ‘Let me explain,’ Pol continues, ‘The first disciples fasted when Jesus went back to heaven and they were left to themselves as children of the bridechamber (Mt 9:15 25:6 Mk 2:19,20 Lu 5:34-35). That means that as friends of the bridegroom, they were to provide and care for whatever pertained to the bridal chamber (the room in which the marriage ceremonies were held). Yes, they were to do whatever was needed for the due celebration of the nuptials (Thayer). In other words, after Jesus went back to heaven, they were to help make the universal Church ready for her marriage to the Lamb (Re 19:7). ‘For this to happen, they were first to become new creations (2Co 5:17) so as to be able to receive the new work of the Holy Spirit—being poured on all flesh (Ac 2:17), baptizing (Ac 1:5) and clothing them with power (Lu 24:49 Ac 1:8), giving them “new tongues” (Mr 16:17). ‘When they were not yet fasting, they were like an old garment which will tear when a piece of new garment is patched on it (Lu 5:36). Thus, they need to become a new garment to receive the new patch.

14

‘Before they fasted, they were also like an old wineskins which will burst when new wine is poured out on them (Lu 5:37-38). Thus, they need to become a new wineskin to receive the new wine. As a continuation of this truth, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on them (Ac 2:17,18), some even said that they drank too much wine (Ac 2:13). ‘Jesus expects us to fast for it says, “When ye fast” (Mt 5:16). When we do so, being new creations, we can receive the Holy Spirit’s empowering for service. Then, like Christ (Lu 4:18), in answer to our prayer, God’s glory will be with us and He will continually guide and anoint us to help transform nations as we evangelize, heal, feed, cloth and shelter captives (Mt 24:14) and deliver them from wickedness (Is 58:6-12). This is how we are to obey the command to hasten the coming of the day of God (2Pe 3:12). And let me remind you, we are to obey because we love Him (Jn 14:21). We are so engrossed with the One we love that eating and drinking becomes less priority! ‘I'm afraid I would get sick if I do it!’ complains Precy. Pol laughs. 'On the contrary, FASTING IS BENEFICIAL for your physical health. ‘Bill Bright in The Transforming Power of Fasting and Prayer quotes Dr. James and Phyllis Balch in Prescription for Nutritional Healing: Fasting can help reverse the aging process, and if we use it correctly, we will live longer, happier lives ... You can fight off illness and the degenerative diseases so common in this chemically polluted environment we live in ... You heal faster, give your organs a rest, clean your liver and kidneys, purify your blood, cleanse your colon, lose unnecessary weight, get rid of toxin build-up in tissues, clear the eyes and tongue, cleanse the breath, and lose excess water. ‘Lee Bueno in her book ‘Fast Your Way to Health’ documents instances where through fasting 88-92% of people improved or totally recovered from ‘rheumatoid vasculities’ (p.20), DDT & mercury in the body (p.50-51), amoeba (p.96), tumors (p.87-88), ulcers, tuberculosis, sinusitis, pyorrhea, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, cancer, insomnia, gallstones, epilepsy, colitis, hay fever, bronchitis, asthma, arthritis. 60% of patients diagnosed as schizophrenic for at least 5 years and had not responded to standard treatment had remarkable success when they had water only fast (p.95). With 40,000 patients from 1928-1981, Dr. Shelton claims that the treatment of virtually every acute or chronic disease responds with astounding success to properly supervised fasting. Other diseases that were discussed include common cold, multiple sclerosis, ulcers, migraine, cardiovascular disease, obesity, psoriasis, and eczema (p.96). People were also freed from excessive caffeine, kidney disease, headaches, backaches, constipation, constant urination, myasthenia gravis (with extreme weakness and difficulty

15

in speaking as symptoms), acute glomerular nephritis, acute pain on the hips on walking (p.227-230).' 'But you did not mention my sickness in what you quoted!' complains Precy. 'Nevertheless, the Bible still promises healing in fasting. Is 58:8,11 KJV says. “... and your recovery will speedily spring forth...” 'Ahh!' responds Precy ‘More than that, fasting can give you direction on what to do. Will you read the first part of Isaiah 58:11, Tim?’ "And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places ...” ‘For example,’ continues Pol, ‘when I wanted just decisions on what to do (NAS Is 58:2), such as who to bring to be my companion in this mission to New Berea, I fasted, following the examples in Ac 13:1-4; 14:23 (Cf. Ezra 8:21-23,31,32; Ac 27:3-34). So I chose to challenge you! ‘When you fast, you can even receive knowledge, skill, wisdom (Da 1:12,17; 10:2-7,17), insight and understanding (9:2,3,21,22) even of dreams and visions (1:17),’ explains Pol. ‘During my recent fast, I saw God answering my intercession just as Moses did in De 9:17-20. ‘Do you mean if I fast, I can receive even direction for my love life?’ asks Tim with a smile. ‘God may chose to reveal that to you during your fast. However, you should not allow your emotion to hinder you from hearing other things from Him. I know of a missionary who when he was in love fasted. During the fast, he was convinced from his Bible reading that they were for each other. He also had a dream of reaching a people group in his country. He proposed to the lady that they will minister to her country together. She told him to seek God again for the place to minister. Later they broke up … and he realized he failed to follow God’s direction from the dream! ‘Will you read Isaiah 58:6, Precy?’ “Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, And break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6 NAS) ‘According to this verse, what would happen if you fast in the way chosen

16

by God?’ asks Pol. ‘I will be free from bond and yoke of sin and oppression!’ replies Precy. ‘For us to see in what way oppression was done by the Jews, will you read Isaiah 58:3 NAS, Tim? “ ‘Why have we fasted and Thou dost not see? Why have we humbled ourselves and Thou dost not notice?’ Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire, And drive hard all your workers.” ‘How were the Jews committing the sin of oppression?’ asks Pol. ‘They were driving hard all their workers while they were fasting,’ replies Tim. ‘In Psalm 73:4 NAS, speaking of the wicked, the word bonds was translated ‘pains’: “For there are no pains in their death….” Thus, because the Jews were driving hard all their workers, the latter were experiencing pain as if they were dying.’ Did you want your goal to be accomplished so much that you drove hard all that were supporting your leadership? … Did they feel pain and not your love for them? … Do you want to be freed from such ‘leadership preference’? … Then fast! ‘Verse 3 says, “Why have we humbled ourselves and Thou dost not notice?” God did not notice their fasting as a sign of humility. Is fasting a way to humble oneself?’ asks Tim. ‘Yes, for David said in Psalms 35:13 NAS, “…I humbled my soul with fasting….” Unlike what happened to the Jews, fasting is a way you can humble yourself, and thus free yourself from pride.’ Do you have a tendency to do your work without praying? If so, you need to humble yourself before God. Fasting can help. ‘One pastor was having problem with his sexual lusts. So he fasted. On the third day, he noticed that lusts no longer control him!’ Is there a sin in your life which you have not overcome? … Have you believed in Jesus as the Son of God (1John 5:4-5)? …. Have you considered yourself as dead to that sin but alive to God and presented your body as instrument of righteousness (Romans 6:1-13)? … Have you walked by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), living in dependence upon Him for strength to overcome that sin? … Have you submitted yourself to God and

17

resisted the devil (James 4:7)? … Have you fled from that sin (1Corinthians 6:18; 10:14; 1Timothy 6:1; 2Timothy 2:22)? … Have you memorized Scripture (Psalm 119:9,11)? … Has your desire to overcome it become so intense that you fasted? … If you have not done some of these things, then do so immediately. 'The Hebrew word for oppressed in Isaiah 58:6 is sometimes translated into the Greek word in “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38 NAS) 'The same word is used in “But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?” (James 2:6 NAS) 'If you are poor, the rich oppress you and your family by dragging you into court, a place you do not want to go and where you spend money but you have no choice. In the same way, if you are sick, Satan and his demons oppress you and your family by dragging you into the hospital/clinic, a place you do not want to go and where you spend money but you have no choice. An example of one oppressed by the devil through sickness and was healed by Jesus is narrated in Mark 5:25-34 NAS: And a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse, 27 after hearing about Jesus, came up in the crowd behind Him, and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I shall get well." 29 And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power [proceeding] from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?" 31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’" 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction." 25

Another example of one oppressed by a demonic spirit is given in Mark

18

9:17-29 NKJV: Then one of the crowd answered and said, "Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 "And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not." 19 He answered him and said, "O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me." 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood. 22 "And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." 23 Jesus said to him, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes." 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!" 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, "He is dead." 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" 29 So He said to them, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting." 17

Notice that the disciples could not cast out the spirit that oppressed the child and his father because it can only be cast out by prayer and fasting. Do you know of one whose sickness has been classified as incurable or chronic by the doctors or demonic by those who observe it but he did not get healed when you rebuked the sickness or demon? Then pray and fast for him for his healing! ‘Will you read Isaiah 58:8-10 NAS?’ “8 Then your light will break out like the dawn, And your recovery will speedily spring forth; And your righteousness will go before you; The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. 10—And if you give yourself to the hungry, And satisfy the desire of the afflicted, Then your light will rise in darkness, And your gloom will become like midday.” (Isaiah 58:8-10 NAS) ‘What do you see are the other results of fasting?’ ‘In darkness, my light will break out like the dawn and will increase in brightness as in midday! That means my good works will be recognized by others as coming from God, for Jesus said,

19

“…. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 NAS)’ ‘I had a bad testimony in the past. That means I shall recover from it and have a good testimony!’ exclaims Precy! ‘You shall recover fast! Verse 8 of Isaiah 58 also says that if we fast, we will recover “speedily” and our righteousness will go before us!’ adds Tim. Have you been a bad testimony? Fast, and you will recover fast from that bad testimony! ‘Verse 8 also says that ‘the glory of the Lord will be our rear guard,’ observes Precy. ‘I am afraid at times to walk in the streets at night. This means that God will protect me!’ Ezra’s group also fasted and sought God, and God protected them: “

Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God to seek from Him a safe journey for us, our little ones, and all our possessions. 22 For I was ashamed to request from the king troops and horsemen to protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, "The hand of our God is favorably disposed to all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who forsake Him." 23 So we fasted and sought our God concerning this matter, and He listened to our entreaty.” (Ezra 8:21-23 NAS) 21

When God’s people fast, He does not only defend them but may even attack their enemies: “3 And Jehoshaphat was afraid and turned his attention to seek the LORD; and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 So Judah gathered together to seek help from the LORD; they even came from all the cities of Judah to seek the LORD. … 22 And when they began singing and praising, the LORD set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; so they were routed. 23 For the sons of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir destroying them completely, and when they had finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. (2 Chronicles 20 NAS) Is there a threat to your life? … Then fast and ask God to protect you (Jonah 3:1-10 Esther 4:15-5:3 7:3-9:15)! ‘Will you read Isaiah 58:11 Precy?’

20

“The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” (Isaiah 58:11 NKJV) ‘So what do you see as an advantage of fasting?’ ‘He will satisfy my soul with water even in drought,’ answers Precy. ‘What do you think it means?’ ‘I will receive refreshing from God’s word (Ephesians 5:26) and Spirit (John 7:38-39) even when others find it difficult!’ Do you need refreshing from God’s word & Spirit? … Then fast. 'Tim,' calls Pol, 'will you read verse 12?' “And those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; You will raise up the age-old foundations; And you will be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.” (Isaiah 58:12 NAS) ‘Does that mean that if I fast, I can help in the welfare of New Berea?’ asks Tim. ‘I read that those whom God has used to transform cities fasted regularly … Luther, Calvin, Wesley, etc.’, states Precy. ‘We see earlier that fasting is a means to humble oneself. Now humbling oneself is a condition for the healing of New Berea. For 2 Chronicles 7:1314 NAS states: “13 If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, 14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Do you desire the place where you live to experience economic recovery? … Then fast (Joel 1:8-14 2:12,15-26) ‘As you may already know, many in New Berea went abroad because of the economic difficulty here,’ laments Precy, ‘As a result, many families were destroyed—The husband, the wife or both had an affair, and/or their children did not have both parents to raise them up that some have ended up being homosexuals or lesbians. Is there hope?’ ‘There is hope. When you satisfy the conditions of 2Chronicles 7:13,14, God promises to bring back those who were driven abroad because of economic difficulty:

21

‘And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. 14 ‘And I will be found by you,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will restore your fortunes and will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’” (Jeremiah 29:13-14 NAS) “13

‘WHAT IS FASTING?’ ‘Fasting means abstaining from food. It can be from all kinds of food or just some. ‘When you fast from all kinds of food, you may chose not to fast from water. In Jesus’ 40 days fast, He did not get thirsty after 40 days, but only “hungry” (Mt 4:2 Lu 4:2). Thus, he had a water-only fast. In the same way, Elijah "went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights," not "of that food and drink" (1Ki 19:8). He too drank water when he was fasting. Water-only fast is suggested when you want to fast for your health. ‘However, in exceptional situations, you may chose to fast from both food and water (1Sa 7:6 Ac 9:9 Ezr 10:6-9 Es 4:16 De 9:9,18 Ex 34:28). ‘The Lord may also lead you to abstain from certain kinds of foods and drinks: You may chose not to eat food which makes a fellow-Christian stumble (1Co 8:13). You may also chose not to drink all kinds of wine and eat wine-related products (Nu 6:3,4), bread (Lu 7:33 Mt 11:18), meat, or tasty food (NAS Da 10:2,3 Nu 6:3,4), but only take vegetables and water (Da 1:8,12,16). ‘In those countries where juices from fruits and vegetables are cheap, some chose to fast with juice only. Christian nutritionist Pamela Smith recommends drinking “twelve ounces of juice at your meal times and six ounces every 2 hours between meals, along with up to 2 - 3 quarts of water spread evenly throughout the day ... Vegetable juices will supply the electrolytes necessary for proper heart functions. Fresh squeezed juices are recommended. Any store-bought juice should be free of sugar (corn syrup, etc.) and salt. Acidic juices, such as orange or tomato, will be better tolerated if they are half juice, half water. Herbal teas and a pure vegetable broth (oil- and salt-free) can also be part of the daily intake. The juices, herbal teas, and vegetable broth will pass through the stomach without starting the digestive system and keep your body burning the low-grade stored fat, so you will not feel hungry... (Bright, ibid.) ‘But if I fast, I’m afraid, I would die from hunger!’ says Percy. Pol and Tim laughs. But since Percy seems to be serious about what she said, Pol explains, ‘I remember again the missionary who fasted. In his weakness after two days fasting, he kidded his trainee, ‘If I die from fasting,

22

tell her I love her!’ The trainee said to himself, ‘I don’t want my trainer to be changed!’ ‘You won’t die when you miss a meal or two! But when you fast for two days or more, you may feel the weakening of knees (Ps 109:24). You may even faint if you walk (Mt 15:32). In long fast, you may experience extreme weariness (Da 9:21 NAS).

‘HOW FREQUENT SHOULD I FAST?’ asks Tim. ‘As God leads. Paul fasted often (2Co 11:27 KJV). Anna, a prophetess, fasted and prayed day and night (Lu 2:36,37). John the Baptist fasted regularly too (Mt 11:18 Lu 7:33). Some fasted twice a week: The Pharisee (Lu 18:11,12) fasted on Monday and Thursday during the day (Gill). Note that Jesus did not condemn his fasting in this way, but only for exalting himself (Lu 18:14). The early church (2nd and 3rd century Christians?) fasted every Wednesday and Friday (Did. 8.1, as quoted in Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, p. 633. Didymus of Alexandria wrote his at about 395 A.D - p. XVIII of Thayer’s Lexicon). Wesley and the early Methodists followed their example. Jews fasted at least 4 times a year (Zec 8:19) such as on the day of Atonement called the fast (Clarke’s comment on Acts 27:9). So you may consider fasting regularly. They also fasted when godly proclamations were made (Joe 2:15 2Ch 20:3 Jon 3:5-9 Je 36:9 Ezr 8:21-23 Es 4:15,16 9:30,31). A heathen king fasted at night (Da 6:18). Others fasted one day (1Sa 7:6 Ne 9:1-3 1Sa 20:34) as commanded on the Day of Atonement (Le 16:29-34; Ex 23:26-32; Nu 29:7-11); others three (Mt 15:32 Mk 8:2,3 Ac 9:9), some night and day (Es 4:15,16). David at one time fasted in less than 7 days (2Sa 12:15-18,21-23). “Seventh day” is taken not “from its being taken ill, but from its birth” (Gill). Matthew Henry agrees, “It died... when it was seven days old... before it was brought under the seal of the covenant.” Unless specified, fasting is done in the daytime, before sunset. This explains why it was specified that “all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was still day” (2Sa 3:35; see also 2Sa 1:12 Jud 20:26). Some fasted 7 days (1Sa 31:13 1Ch 10:12). Gill comments “they fasted every day till evening, as the Jews used to do”. If you fast continuously for at least 7 days, you should break it gradually,

23

for ‘“Hippocrates, that great physician, says, that ‘‘those who remain without food seven days, thenceforward, if they would, cannot receive any support from food, because then the belly will not admit of any’’ and gives this reason for it, because the fasting intestine coheres, or is wrinkled.’ (Gill on Ex 24:18) Some fasted 14 days (Ac 27:33). “They ate very little, next to nothing...” (Matthew Henry), Daniel fasted for 3 entire weeks (Da 9:3 10:2,3) Nehemiah fasted for an unidentified number of days (Ne 1:4). He did so for some days somewhere between 3 to 5 months, from the month Chisleu (Ne 1:1) to Nisan (Ne 2:1). However, Nehemiah may still have tasted the king’s food since he was cupbearer (Ne 1:11b). Jesus and Elijah fasted 40 days and nights (Mt 4:2 Lu 4:2 1Ki 19:8). Moses fasted for 80 days and nights (De 9:9,18; Ex 34:28).’ ‘I once thought of fasting but I didn’t want to spoil our food!’, remarks Tim. ‘Then you should have considered it like the water David wanted to drink but poured out to the Lord (2Sa 23:16; 1Ch 11:18)!’

‘BUT WHAT DO I DO WHEN I FAST?’ asks Tim. ‘Be a practical revivalist,’ answers Pol. ‘What do you mean?’ ‘A revivalist seeks to follow 2Chronicles 7:13-14,’ explains Pol. ‘So you should: 1. Humble yourself (Ps 35:13 Ps 69:10 Le 16:29-31 Ja 4:2 1Pe 5:6 Mt 18:4 23:12 Ac 27:9). Remember though that following just the externals in fasting, afflicting oneself (Ps 35:13) is not enough (Is 58:3,5). In fact, you should not even seek to make known that you are fasting. Instead, anoint your head and wash your face (Mt 6:17). But in case one asks you or if you are encouraging one to fast, you may tell him about it in love (Ep 4:15). 2. Pray (Lu 2:37) for yourself and others (Da 9:3). Expect answers (Is 58:9) as your reward (Mt 6:17-18). Weep before God as He leads (Es 4:3 Ps 69:10). 3. Seek God to delight in His nearness and to know His ways (Isa 58:2). Read the Bible (Je 36:6 Ne 9:1-3).

24

4. Turn from your wicked ways (Isa 58:1-4,9-10). Seeking God (v.2) is of no value when it is done with unconfessed sin. Therefore, when fasting, confess any unconfessed sin such as the desire to get what one likes very-very much for oneself (Is 58:3). That includes the desire to win a legal, verbal or physical battle (Is 58:4a). For example, King Ahab fasted when he did not get the Naboth’s vineyard. His wife then proclaimed a fast to spiritualize the accusation against Naboth so that he can be killed (1Ki 21:1-16). The Jews indefinitely fasted also for wrong motive—to kill Paul (Ac 23:12,13). The hypocrites wanted fame, so they fasted (Mt 6:16). They had the form of godliness without the power (2Ti 3:5). ‘You should also be practical. Follow the advice of others who have fasted well. 1. If you are not abstaining from water, “drink lukewarm or cold water throughout the day and exercise moderately”. 2. Remove as many possible reminders of food during a fast. 3. “Water-only fasts that last for more than several days need to be undertaken with complete rest and under medical supervision because of the extreme danger of over-toxification, breakdown of vital body tissues, and loss of electrolytes.” (Bright, ibid., p.183) 4. You should stop fasting if you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, “unusual heart palpitation, prolonged headaches, extreme weakness.” (Medical Training Institute of America) Precy tells of her apprehension, ‘I heard of a story of one who fasted 40 days and had dextrose given to him. His body had a shock and he died.’ Tim adds, ‘Another person who fasted for forty days ate grilled pork on the second day of breaking the fast. He was confined on a hospital for two weeks!’ Pol cautions them, ‘When you break your fast, temptation to overeat will be there, because as you break the fast, “every bitter thing” will be “sweet” (Pr 27:7). So be careful that after fasting, you gradually eat food. ‘Apply self-control in breaking your fast as you did during the fast. For a day fast, you may eat a regular meal. 'When you do not eat and drink for two days, the maximum you are to eat should be an equivalent of a small “bread ... a piece [or part] of fig cake and two clusters [or cakes] of raisins” (1Sa 30:11-12 NAS). For three days, you may start breaking your fast by drinking juice. After

25

three hours, take fresh juice. After another three hours, take light meal. On the next meal, you may eat a little less than your regular meal. On the next meal, you may eat your regular meal. You gradually return to regular eating depending on the length of your fast—more slowly for longer fast. A good guideline is to stop eating when you sense that hunger is gone. When I once had my 3 day fast, I broke it with fresh fruits only in breakfast (the diet given for man in Ge 1:29) and lunch and soup at night. ‘To maximize benefits to others, after fasting: 1. Break your fast gradually. For five days, I took soup for the first day, soup with boiled fish on the second and third day. When I fasted for 21 days, I took about a week with this diet. Trust God for the same patience in breaking your fast as when you were fasting. The recommended weight goal is within 10 pounds above or below 6 pound for each inch above 5 feet of your height + (106 pounds for men or 100 pounds for women). If your weight before you fasted is above recommended, do not return to your previous intake after fasting! Glorify God in your eating too (1Co 10:31,32)! 2. Use your savings from fasting to give to other’s basic needs-- food, clothing and shelter (Isa 58.7,10). A good model to follow is John Wesley. He received large amounts of money yet ate the cheapest staple food most of the time, so that he can give more to others, especially the poor. 3. Seek to minister to the soul of the afflicted (Is 58:10b). 4. When led, do more to help your country recover (Is 58:12). ‘Thanks Pol! This time is really very informative,’ declares Precy. ‘Yes Pol, it was really nice of you to share these things to us!’ adds Tim. ‘You’re welcome! So when do you plan to fast?’ ‘I will begin with the daytime fast with water only twice a week beginning next week to help reach New Berea!’ says Tim. ‘I will fast with water only, during the day also but only once a week beginning this week also to help reach New Berea,’ says Precy. ‘Good! So lets meet to witness tomorrow 10 o’clock in the morning?’ asks Pol. ‘Okay, see you!’ answers Tim. ‘But I will not join you tomorrow. I have work,’ says Precy. ‘Okay, see you Tim here tomorrow 10:00 o’clock.’ repeats Pol.

Converting a Son of Peace

A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW TO SHARE THE GOSPEL ‘Father,’ prays Pol, ‘You are reigning in this place (Is 52:7). As we declare your kindness (Ro 2:4), put Your Spirit on them (Eze 37:14). Grant them repentance (Ac 5:31) from sin (3:26; 8:22-23) to You (26:20; 20:21; 3:19). Give them grace to understand, know and believe (Ro 3:11; Isa 43:10; Ps 9:10; Ac 18:27) with all their heart that Jesus who has been raised from the dead (Ro 10:9) is the Son of God (Ac 8:37). Let them be willing (Ps 110:3) to confess Him as Lord (Ro 10:9) that they may receive life (11:18) that is eternal (Ac 13:48) and forgiveness (Ac 3:19; 8:22; 10:43). Jesus, use Your keys to lock the gates of Hades now that those we meet may not enter anyone of them (Re 1:18). Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we can have boldness to speak (Ac 2:29). Let us find those on whom Your Spirit is already working that they become additional workers with whom we can fellowship, meet needs and preach the gospel (Luke 10:1-9, 17-24).’ 'Let us visit this house,' invites Pol. 'Okay!' responds Tim. 'Good morning sir!' smiling Pol greets a man. The man slams the door before him. 'Definitely that is not a son of peace, right?' comments Tim. 'You are absolutely right. The son of peace does not wage war against us (Ps 120:7) nor debate with us (Sirach 28:9 APC) nor inject enmity (RAPC)!' responds Pol with a peaceful smile. 'Let us go to another house.' 'Good morning sir!' Tim greets a man who was very serious in his looks. He responds with a peaceful look, 'What can I do for you?' 'We are praying for people in this place. May we pray for you?' Tim asks. 'Sure. Come in!' 'I'm Pol and this is Tim.' 'I'm Nel.’ ‘What would you want us to pray for you?’ ‘I have just been diagnosed with pneumonia and am taking medicine.' 'So let us pray for you then. ... Lord Jesus, thank you that on the cross you took even pneumonia. So I ask you to fulfill your promise that if I ask anything for the glory of the Father, You Yourself will do it (Jn 14:12-13).' Pol touched his back and commanded, 'In Jesus' name, pneumonia leave this body now! ... 'Did you feel that God is with us when we prayed?' asks Pol. 'I felt that your hand was hot!' exclaims Nel.

28

‘My hand did not get hot,’ testifies Pol, ‘it was Jesus’ hand that you felt! … He told us, ‘If you ask anything in My name, I will do it that the Father may be glorified in the Son’ (John 14:12-13). Since God will be glorified, Jesus healed you! God is with us today! DO YOU WANT TO BE WITH GOD WHO REIGNS ALWAYS?’ Of course!’ So Pol explained to him the piece of literature shown in the next page.

DO YOU WANT TO ALWAYS BE WITH GOD WHO REIGNS? If so, admit that you have disobeyed His commands: • “Do not murder.” … “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer” … “Anyone who says to his brother, ‘Idiot!’, ‘Empty head!’ … ‘Fool!’ will be in danger of the fires of hell!” 1 Have you slept angry? Did you not forgive? Have you cursed him? • “… do not lie to one another. …" 2 Have you lied? … • “You shall not commit adultery”; “… everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” 3 Have you looked to lust for one not your spouse? Have you caused others to sin? Since you have disobeyed at least one of these commandments, YOU ARE IN DANGER OF HELL! “… the murderers, the sexually immoral … and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur [10 times hotter than boiling water]. This is the second death." 4 … However, “… CHRIST DIED FOR SINS once and for all, the righteous FOR the unrighteous, to bring YOU to God 5. GOD THEN RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD 6 and He appeared to more than five hundred ….7 Because Jesus rose from the dead just as He said He would, His claims for Himself are true: HE IS THE MESSIAH. In the beginning, He was already with the one God and Father. 8 Being His Word, He came from the Father but was not created. Instead, through Him, the Father created all things and gives life. The Father also called Him GOD. He took the form of a man. 9

He must accompany you so that you can go to heaven. He asserts: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through Me.” 10 That is why YOU HAVE TO INVITE JESUS to be your God, Lord and Savior from sins and hell. He promises: “HERE I AM! I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK. Pol continues reading,`If so, admit that you have disobeyed his commands: “Do not murder. … “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer … Anyone who says to his brother, ‘Idiot!’, ‘Empty headed!’ … ‘Fool!’ will be in danger of the fires of hell!” I said I won’t do this. But when my sister slandered me before my mother, to get even, I used to speak evil against her! … 'How about you? Have you slept angry? … ' 'Yes!' 'replies Nel with a smile.' 'Did you not forgive?' Nel nods in agreement. 'Have you cursed him? 'Yes, I did … we are just humans!’ ‘God also commands, "... do not lie to one another. …" Have you lied?” ‘‘Sometimes!’ ‘Since you have disobeyed at least one of these commandments, YOU ARE IN DANGER OF HELL!' 'Please read this verse...' '“But … the murderers …and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."' ‘However, “… CHRIST DIED FOR sins once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring YOU to God.” GOD THEN RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD and He appeared to more than five hundred—. 'Because Jesus rose from the dead just as He said He would, His claims for Himself are true: HE IS THE MESSIAH. In the beginning, He was already with the one God and Father. Being His Word, He came from the Father but was not created. Instead, through Him, the Father created all things and gives life. The Father also called Him GOD. He took the form of a man.' ‘He must accompany you so that you can go to heaven. He asserts: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.” ‘That is why YOU HAVE TO INVITE JESUS to be your God, Lord and Savior from sins and hell. . He promises: “HERE I AM! I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK. IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE AND OPENS THE DOOR, I WILL COME IN AND EAT WITH HIM, AND HE WITH ME.” 'Some, in opening their hearts, prayed this way: “Lord Jesus, I agree that I have sinned and am in danger of going to hell. I now open the door of my life and receive you as my Savior and God.” ‘Does this prayer express the desire of your heart?’ ‘Yes,’ replies Nel. ‘If it does, pray this prayer right NOW . . . I am going to repeat this prayer a phrase at a time. You may follow after me. Okay?’ Nel nods and followed him in prayer… ‘Did you open the door of your life to Christ?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Did he come into your life?’ ‘I hope so?’ ‘Will you read this verse again?’ Pol points to Revelation 3:20 in the

gospel tract. Nel reads it, ‘HERE I AM! I STAND AT THE DOOR AND KNOCK. IF ANYONE HEARS MY VOICE AND OPENS THE DOOR, I WILL COME IN AND EAT WITH HIM, AND HE WITH ME.’ ‘Since you opened the door of your life to Christ, do you think He fulfilled His promise to come?’ ‘Of course!’ ‘He also promises, “NEVER WILL I LEAVE YOU; NEVER WILL I FORSAKE YOU.”— Will he ever leave you?’ ‘No.’ ‘If so, when you die, where will you be with him?’ ‘In heaven!’ So Pol and Tim congratulates Nel. Pol continues, ‘Do you have a Bible in your house?’ ‘I don’t!’ ‘Well, here is a booklet on the Gospel According to John. … Read it daily. Join also a small Bible study group. We can start one in your house? Is that okay with you?’ ‘Sure!’ ‘How about tomorrow night, 7:30 p.m.?’ ‘That would be good for me!’ ‘Can you also invite your family and friends?’ ‘Of course I will!’ ‘See you then 7:30 p.m. here tomorrow! ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ON WITNESSING When they left Nel's house, Tim requests, 'Can we take a drink in this restaurant? I have some questions!' 'Sure,' Pol answers with gladness. They entered a small restaurant and Tim ordered some drinks. ‘It is good that we found Nel!’ ‘We found him because God prepared him to receive our peace (Lu 10:6).’ ‘It seems that there is power even in our greeting!’ ‘Of course! We are children of God (Jn 1:12; 1Jn 3:2). Jesus will do whatever we ask that will glorify God (Jn 14:12-13), even moving mountains (Mt 17:20)! When we bless others by greeting them, “Good morning/afternoon/evening,” we can really make their day good because we are bringing the good news! In fact, some have become effective witnesses simply by greeting all in their neighborhood with a smile. ‘You are too fast in praying for Nel’s healing! Shouldn’t you first allow him to serve us food according to Luke 10:7-8?’ ‘Ha-ha-ha! In some cases, sons of peace serve food first before I am able to pray for them. One of the best means to develop friendship is fellowship through eating! In fact, Jesus used it as an illustration of fellowship with the person to whom He comes in (Rev 3:20). That is why I

use food to develop friendship and encourage others to use it too. ‘Should I allow the person to whom I am witnessing to hear my prayer for his needs before I share the gospel?’ ‘Not really! I have led people to Christ without first letting them hear my prayer for their needs. However, I have found it a chance to obey Christ’s command to heal the sick (Lu 10:6; Mt 10:8; 28:20). 'When praying for others, I expect the Lord to testify to the word of His grace through signs (Ac 14:3; Mr 16:20). That way, as I preach that the kingdom of God has come (Lu 10:9), they will recognize that I am one of the believers of the gospel. “.... These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name ... they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." (Mr 16:16-18) ‘Isn’t it too proud for us to desire that others see that we are the true believers?’ ‘Jesus will not do anything for us if it will not glorify God (Jn 14:12-13) ‘What if Nel did not experience God’s power when you prayed?’ ‘I have prayed for some who did not feel anything. But I just continued. The righteous shall live by faith and not by sight (2Co 5:7). Prayer for others expresses love. That is why I have led people to Christ though they did not feel the healing when I prayed for them. 'Moreover, you need to remember that God did not only use healing to open up people for the gospel. In giving food, clothing or shelter to those in need (Isa 58:6-12), Christians have led many to Christ. This was also true of the apostles (Ga 2:9).

'Why is your presentation of the gospel short? That one took you 7 minutes only!' 'I want to persuade those who hear me become Christians even in a short time (Ac 26:28-29). However, when they would not, I seek to explain the gospel in the best way I can, as long as they are willing to hear. For a Buddhist, I took 45 minutes. For a Muslim, I took 45 minutes also. But for a Hindu, I took 4 hours. For those who attend the Bible studies I lead, I would even allow others take as long as 7 weeks to understand the gospel. ‘The Law was given through Moses after Israel was delivered from Egypt. Why do you use the Law for people who are not yet saved?’ ‘The “gospel ... is ... for salvation ....” (Romans 1:16 NAS). According to it, it is sound teaching and lawful to use the Law for those to whom it was made—for its violators: “But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” (1Timothy 1:8-11 NAS)

‘Oh yes! ‘, exclaims Tim, ‘In the verse you read, the Law is part of the gospel!’ Pol smiles. 'Why do you stress the law and hell more than God's love? Isn't it that "more come to God through the love of God rather than the fear of God"?' 'That is a statement that is not found in the Bible. The closest would be, “...the kindness of God leads you to repentance” (Ro 2:4 NAS). However, the kindness of God is magnified when we have sorrow for our sinfulness. That sorrow is produced as we are rebuked for our sins—our transgression of God's laws (1Jn 3:4 KJV). For example, Paul rebuked the Corinthians for their sins such as jealousy, strife (1Corinthians 3:1-4), pride (4:7,18; 8:2), tolerating incest (5:1-5), suing one another in courts (6:1-8), causing another to stumble (8:7-13), abusing the Lord's supper (11:20,29,30), having bad company (15:33). In 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 NAS, he said, “8 ... by my letter ... you were made sorrowful according to the will of God.... 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation....” 'Thus, in leading people to salvation, I seek to be used by God to produce sorrow in them that comes through the knowledge of their sinfulness. I let them realize this by using the Law to show them that they cannot be declared righteous by it, “because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20 NAS). Once they see their sinfulness, their disobedience to God, I warn them of the result—retribution (2Th 1:8; 1Pe 4:17) that they may have the fear of God, be wise (Pr 9:10), see their need of the Savior and I may present them complete in Christ (Colossians 1:28-29). Then they can say with us, “Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith.” (Galatians 3:24 NAS)' 'I noticed that you used three commandments in the gospel tract you gave. Why three?' 'Actually, one would have been enough for some people to receive Christ, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” (James 2:10 NAS). For example, the Samaritan woman was convicted of living-in with one not her husband (John 4:8), received Christ as her Messiah and convinced many to come to Jesus (v. 28-30,42). The rich young man was convicted of unwillingness to give his possessions to the poor (Matthew 19:16-22). When Peter preached at Pentecost, he told them of one great sin—murder of Jesus (Acts 2:36; John 16:8-9). 'God may lead you to use two as when Jesus rebuked Nicodemus for committing two sins—for not knowing the necessity of being born again though he was a teacher (Jn 3:10) of the Law which talks about being born of God (De 32:18) and for not receiving Jesus' witness (Jn 3:11-12). Thus, to use two commandments as witnesses against the one to whom you are witnessing is good; three is better when space in the gospel tract allows (De 19:15) 'However, if time allows, I want to help them see as many of their sins as

possible, for doing so would allow them to see more the greatness of God's grace. “And the Law came in that the transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Romans 5:20 NAS). Seeing the kindness and love of God in forgiving them, they would repent (Romans 2:4)—love God more. Concerning the woman who poured perfume on Jesus' feet, He said, "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." (Luke 7:36,47 NAS). 'During our next meeting with Nel, I will demonstrate to you how to use the Law of God to help him love God more. I learned this when I read the book, "Toward Lasting Change". 'Because of limitation of time for people in the cities, I thought, "What would be a good number of commands should I use?" I remembered 2Corinthians 13:1 NAS: “....EVERY FACT IS TO BE CONFIRMED BY THE TESTIMONY OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES.” So I thought of taking only two or three. Three of the most common sins that people commit are murder, adultery in their heart and lying (Matthew 5:21-22,27-37). I chose to use these sins in the gospel tract I reproduce because I want to save more money and time. To save space, for some languages, I placed only two commandments in the gospel tract that I use. In my experience, most people admitted they have either committed murder in their heart or lied. 'So in the gospel presentation, I use two or three witnesses—two or three commandments of the Law which many violated. In the same way, Jesus rebuked Nicodemus for committing two sins—not understanding the need to be born again (Jn 3:10) and not accepting Jesus' witness (v.11-12) ‘In our next appointment with Nel, I will use the rest of the Ten Commandments.' 'What translation did you use for the second verse?' 'Actually, I made a translation from the study I made. Matthew 5:22 NIV says,“... anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ ... ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” (Matthew 5:22 NIV). 'Raca ... is a Syriac word, expressive of great contempt. It comes from a verb signifying to be empty, vain; and hence, as a word of contempt, denotes senseless, stupid, shallowbrains' (Barnes New Testament Notes). In the English Majority Text Version, it is translated ‘Empty–head!’. In the Message, it is translated, 'idiot'. 'You have Christ's death, resurrection and deity in the gospel tract. Others do not have one, two or all of them. Is each one of them necessary?' 'In the second, third and fourth follow-up appointment with Nel, you will understand better why they should be part of our preaching of the gospel and hence should be included in the gospel tract. 'You have a different drawing of the bridge. Why was Jesus not the bridge to God?' 'Jesus said, “I am the way... no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” (John 14:6 NAS). He was not the bridge but "the way". To go to God,

you must follow Jesus. Those to whom Jesus gives eternal life follow Him (John 10:27-28). But our salvation is not dependent on our ability to follow Him but in His faithfulness and power to keep us in the right track to God. Being one of His sheep, if you get lost, He will look for you until He finds you (Luke 15:3-10). 'You use Revelation 3:20 to encourage Nel to pray to receive Christ. Is that verse not given for a church?' 'The letters in Revelation 2 and 3 were sent to the seven churches (Revelation 1:11) but a closer look would show that they are written to the 'angels' or 'messengers' of those churches (Revelation 2:1,8,12,15; 3:1,7,14). For the messenger of Laodicea, his description does not indicate that he can lead his flock to a saving knowledge of Jesus, because Jesus told him, “17 ... you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18 I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich, and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.” (3:17-18 NAS). Because of this, Jesus tells him, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20 NAS). If anyone of his flock, or he himself, hears Jesus' voice and opens the door, Christ will come in! 'You led Nel in a prayer to receive Christ? Can he be saved without praying the prayer?' 'Prayer is a good work. Therefore, it cannot save a person (Ephesians 2:8,9). Furthermore, we do not find people being asked to receive Christ in prayer in the Bible. However, audible prayer is a way by which people can express their faith in Christ. If they cannot express their faith by works, it is dead (James 2:26). Furthermore, to be saved, a person has to confess with his mouth that Jesus is Lord. Paul says, “ 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; 10 for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 NAS). 'So I start by encouraging a person to pray audibly to receive Christ. That way I know he has the faith to be saved. If he choses to pray silently, I then ask him if he prayed to receive Christ. If he admits, I consider that as an expression of his faith. 'For a person to be saved, he has to repent (Mr 1:4,15 Lu 24:46-47 Ac 2:38 20:20-21) or change his mind (Greek word for repent), turn away from dead works (He 6:1) and turn toward God (Ac 20:21). 'Why is it that repentance is not mentioned in your gospel presentation?' A person has undergone the repentance or change of mind that leads to salvation when he realizes some facts: 1. He has sinned (Ro 1:1-3:31) by disobeying the commands of God (1Jo 3:4) who made him and gave him physical life (Ac 17:22-29).

2. As a result of his sins, he is now spiritually dead (Eph 2:1)—separated from God (Is 59:2)—and in danger of the death (Ro 6:23), the second death, the lake of fire and brimstone where he will be eternally tormented (Re 21:8). His righteous deeds, being dead also (He 6:1; 9:14), like menstrous garment (Is 64:6), cannot save him (Ep 2:9; Ti 3:5). 3. Since man cannot save himself, Christ had to suffer (Ac 17:3)--to die for his sins according the Old Testament prophecies (Is 52:13-53:12). A very important sign to prove that He has come is His resurrection from the dead. Thus, He also had to rise again from the dead to fulfill the Scriptures (Ps 16:10). 4. There is only one person who has done everything expected of that Christ--Jesus Himself (Ac 17:3)! 5. He died for our sins, offenses (1Co 15:3; Ro 5:8 4:25). He bore our sins on his body on the cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness (1Pe 2:24). Indeed, He offered Himself, shedding His blood to cleanse our “conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (He 9:14,22; Ac 14:15; 1Th 1:9). 6. God raised Him from the dead (Ro 4:24)) on the third day and appeared to different persons and groups of people (1Co 15:4-8). If Jesus was not raised, it is worthless and dangerous to believe in Him for those who do so remain in their sins (1Co 15:13-19). But He did! 7. In raising Him from the dead, God declared Him to be His Son (Ro 1:4) through whom He will judge the world (Ac 17:31). God would not raise Jesus who claimed to be His Son and thus his equal (Jn 5:16-18) unless He really was and forever is. 8. That is why, salvation is found in no one else (Ac 4:12). The way to God is not through a map—the Law, a religious system, good works, etc. It is through a person—Jesus (John 14:6). One just need to express faith (John 3:16) by being with Him.. ‘You assured Nel immediately of his salvation after he prayed to receive Christ. Isn’t that too soon?’ ‘When Nel prayed to receive Jesus Christ as Savior after I presented the gospel, I wanted him to see the light that Jesus abolished spiritual death and brought life and immortality already for him. “...God ... has saved us ... not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,” (2Ti 1:8-10 NAS95) That way, I hope that God will establish him according to the gospel. “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ ....” (Ro 16:25 NAS95) Moreover, it is the Holy Spirit can truly testify that he is indeed saved (Ro 8:16), not my use of any verse. So even if you quote any verse that gives assurance of salvation, if it was not God’s timing for Him to be assured, he

won’t. 'The Biblical references are not given immediately after the quotations. Why? Would not people doubt the integrity of the quotation without the references?' 'The references are not inspired, because they were not part of the original autographs of the Scripture--the authors did not write them. They were just added later to enable people to easily locate the text. Since I do not want to distract people with the references, I just place them at the end of the tract. Anyway, if the one to whom I am witnessing wants to obey God, he would know if the verses quoted are from God. Jesus said, “If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself.” (John 7:17 NAS). 'I noticed that you added “WHO REIGNS” in the title. Why? ‘Because it is part of the gospel. In Isa 52:7, it says, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns! 'Thank you so much for the information!'

OVERVIEW OF DISCIPLESHIP OF A SON OF PEACE 'You are most welcome, Tim, By the way, beginning tomorrow, can you take care of checking the attendance? (Pol gives him a copy of the attendance sheet given in page 31.) 'What are these codes, J0, J1,...?' 'They correspond to objectives for the lessons that we will teach (in pages 38-39) except L1-6 which correspond to chapters in Leading Gospel Studies in New Berea. You will see some of the lesson plans I'll give tomorrow. 'Would you like to try sharing the gospel tomorrow? I'll help you.' 'Agreed!' There seems to be a bulk of information here. Can you give me an overview on what I am to do to the person I will teach? ‘Here’s something for you to read.’ ‘Okay!’ 'I'll pass by your house 7:15 tomorrow night before we proceed to Nel's house. Okay?' 'Okay! See you 7:15!' -oOoWhen Tim arrived home, he read the following: The J series (J1-J6, Be Sure You are Saved lessons) are designed to accomplish the most important things about the gospel. At the end of it, encourage the one you are helping to attend a week-end Toward a Lasting Change Seminar. It is designed that he should bring forth fruit in keeping with repentance—a change of mind (Mt 3:8). For him to have a change of

mind and be transformed (Ro 12:2): 1. It would be good that the seminar be held in an environment where he can grow to the maximum. The first century believer grew to the maximum when they continued daily in the apostles’ teaching, breaking of bread and prayer (Ac 2:41-47). 2. Let him realize the gravity of his sins that he will love God more (Lu 7:47). Use the law for this purpose (Ga 3:24,25) {T1-10 seek to accomplish these.}.After this, it would be good to explain again in detail the judgment of unbelievers (T11). 3. The gospel spreads faster as Christians love each other (Jn 13:34,35). So Satan will try to hinder this by causing them to be bitter with each other (Eph 4:26-27). So we need to forgive one another (T12) 4. For him to be able to bring fruit in keeping with repentance, he needs the power of the Spirit {T13} 5. The other thing Satan does is accuse believers (Re 12:10). The new believer will be able to overcome him by the word of his testimony—as he testifies about the good things God said about him (T14) 6. Remember, the kindness of God leads to repentance (Ro 2:4). Therefore, he should be taught of God’s kindness (1Pe 2:3). Help him understand that God has forgiven him of his sins (1Jn 2:14) - that he will no longer die because of his sins, that he has eternal life (1Jn 5:9-13) {J5 can be reviewed here}. Let him also see the benefits of what Christ has done for him {T15}. Knowing what Jesus did for him better, he will love Jesus more (1Jn 4:19) {J6, TT14}. Christ’s love will control him to live no longer for himself but for Christ (2Co 5:14-15). Having counted the cost, his love for his family and even for his own life will be hatred in comparison to his love for Jesus (Lk 14:25-35). He will then not entangle “himself in the affairs of everyday life so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier” (2Ti 2:4). An instrument God uses to cause this assurance is the Bible (1Pe 2:2). So, it is best for him to examine for himself the Bible. That is what made the Bereans more noble-minded than the Thessalonians (Ac 17:2). Ask him to read the gospel according to John (Jn 20:30-31) {J0, J1-J6 reading assignments}. 7. Baptism is taught during the seminar so that if he wants to be baptized, he can do so at that site.(T16). More than identifying him with your church, you are to seek to identify him with the one God and Father and with His Son and His Spirit who are also called God (Mt 18:19). However, let him experience oneness with your church, for the degree that he is one with your church demonstrates to the world that the Father sent Jesus (Jn 17:20-23). 8. When about three thousand “were pierced to their heart” after Peter shared the gospel to them, they ‘said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren...”‘, wanting to be identified with the apostles. They asked, “...what shall we do?” So Peter commanded them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for (because of) the

forgiveness of your sins...” (Ac 2:38-41). Having believed in Jesus, he is expected to be baptized in a church that believes in the Trinity (Mt 28:18-20) - in an evangelical church that believes that there is one name for the three persons (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) Expecting believers to be baptized, Jesus said “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” (Mk 16:16). As soon as he shows “fruit in keeping with repentance” (Mt 3:8), that he has changed his mind and now believes with all his heart “that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Ac 8:37) and he wants to be identified with your church, you can help arrange for the schedule of his baptism as soon as possible (Ps 119:60). These constitute part of instruction about washings (He 6:2) {T16}. Then you may do the following weekly after the seminar: 9. Make use of the fact that the hope of Christ’s coming purifies (1Jn 3:1-3). Yes, teach him about eternal judgment of believers (He 6;2; 1Co 3:9-15) {A1}. 10. Teach him how to abide in Jesus (Jn 15) and let the Bible (2Ti 3:16,17) abide in him (1Jn 2:14) {A2}. 11. Teach him that he is already dead to sin and alive to God (Ro 6:1-13) {A3}. 12. Guide him to confess his sins immediately (1Jn 1:3-2:2) {A4}, to be empowered by the Holy Spirit (Ga 5:16) {T13} 13. You are to teach those who believe to obey all that Jesus commanded (Mt 28:20). This is best done through small groups. So involve each new believer in multiplying small groups which gathers for teaching, fellowship, evangelistic breaking of the bread and prayer (Ac 2:42,46; 1Co 14:26; 11:26) {A6-8}. If you have enough disciples already, let someone in that group be his companion, personally be accountable for him, helping him grow (Ec 4:9-12) {A6,7}. 14. That he can have all the resources to do these things unhindered and to help others as well, teach him to give cheerfully to the preachers and teachers of the word and for his personal growth (2Co 8-9) {A8, TT16}. To teach him many things, it would be good to do this during a concentrated time (Ac 2:40) in a weekend Discipleship Retreat. Satan will oppose his growth. So you need to teach him how to be strong (1Jn 2:14; 1Co 14:4) “in the Lord and in the strength of His might” (Ep 6:10) and overcome Satan (1Jn 2:13b,14). He can do so because of the word of his testimony and the blood of the Lamb and if he does not love his life even to death (Re 12:11). 15. The word or message of his testimony will be powerful if he is being transformed by the renewing of his mind (Romans 12:2). So you need to teach him how to let the word of Christ richly dwell in him (Co 3:16) {S1}. More than using the materials enclosed in {brackets}, you are to freely use the Bible during your meetings with him (2Ti 3:16,17). As

he knows the Bible more, his faith will increase (Ro 10:17) and he will be able to better “extinguish all the flaming missiles of” Satan (Ep 6:16) and even attack Satan and his demons by speaking the word (Ep 6:17). 16. He is to do these things prayerfully (Jn 15:16). So teach him how to pray also (Ep 6::18-20) {S2}. 17. Use the laying on of hands (He 6:2) to affirm his salvation, edification and calling (Mt 19:13-14) {S3}. Encourage him to do the same to others (Ph 4:9). 18. The blood of the Lamb made it possible through the Holy Spirit for the believer to know the things freely given to him by God (1Co 2:6-13). Encourage him to look for that which will give God glory and to ask anything in Jesus’ name for God’s glory (Jn 14:12-14) {S4, TT15}. 19. In overcoming Satan, you can also help others overcome him. This will give you joy when you see them walk in truth (3Jn 1:3). Like a child who has not yet begotten a son but can take care his younger brothers and sisters, the one you are helping can spiritually lead younger believers already as he continues with his Bible-based training (2Ti 3:16-17) {S5}. In helping him lead others, begin by teaching him how to lead a group discussion {L1-6}. 20. What can cause him to become a spiritual parent--to help cause the birth of others into the kingdom of God is the knowledge of Christ who has been from the beginning (1Jn 2:14; 1:1-4) {W5-7, J2-4, TT11}. With this knowledge, he is to do the following: ● ●

Intercede for the people God placed in his heart (1Ti 2:1-8) {W1}, Fast (Isa 58). Becoming strong, he will also love to spend time with God that even food will not control him {W2}. Preach the gospel (1Co 4:15) of peace (Ep 6:15) “to all creation” (Mk 16:15) {W3} Lead a house of prayer or at least be an assistant leader of that house {Toward Lasting Change Appendix I}. Care for, exhort, encourage and implore them (1Th 2:7,11) {L1-6}.

21. Paul’s knowledge of Christ made him effective in sharing the gospel (1Co 2:1-5). That is why before you end your discipleship meetings with him, see to it that knowing and obeying Christ better is his life-long pursuit (Php 3:7-16; Mt 28:20), especially in helping disciple all the nations too {Teaching New Bereans to Know the Father, Teaching New Bereans to be Strong in the Lord}. As you do all these things, pray. Jesus, who has all the authority, says, “lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:18,20). Therefore, so that he will be more effective in as a witness, teach him how he can receive the power of the Holy Spirit (Ac 1:8) not only in words but also in deeds (Ac 7:22; 1Co 2:4; 4:19,20)—that he will be followed by signs (Mr 16:15-18). Do all these things as an expression of your love for God and others (Mr 12:29-31). Ask him to do the same.

Witnessing in New Berea The author has been preaching the gospel in buses, vans, trains, streets, market places since 1980. This book and that which follows illustrate a better approach to evangelism than that ministry. It is reaching out to the neighbors of a son or sons of peace through Spirit-empowered, evangelistic Bible studies in a house or houses of prayer. It is a combination of what he learned in the past 27 years as an evangelist. This book will equip you (Ephesians 4:11-16) to do the work of an evangelist (2Timothy 4:5) of helping preach the gospel to all men in the power of the Holy Spirit (Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1:8) with all wisdom (Colossians 1:28-29) so that you can help save as many as possible (1Corinthians 9:19-23), to the glory of God! As you read this booklet, you will see from what Pol and Tim did how to start evangelizing a town. You will know how to effectively fast and pray for the place you want to reach—be it your neighborhood, your school or workplace. You will also see a seven minute presentation of the gospel which I have used for the more than 27 years. A plan to help a person spiritually grow from a little child to a father (1John 2:12-14).
