From the President /CEO Can it be that another incredible year has already passed? 2004 will be remembered as a dynamic year of exciting change for Winona Health, as we came to a crossroads and chose our path. We dedicated time this past year to review our mission statement and gain consensus and commitment to our organizational purpose. These efforts engaged our board members, management, staff and physicians. The result is a new mission statement that captures the purpose of our organization and our commitment to serve the community:

Winona Health is devoted to improving the health and well-being of our family, friends and neighbors. The Winona Health Board of Directors approved this mission statement in September. It is such an important organizational statement, as it guides all of our decisions and actions. Our strategic plan is based on this statement; our capital plan is based on it; and every departments’ efforts are aligned with meeting this mission. Beyond a statement of commitment, Winona Health has to demonstrate how we are meeting this mission every day. Every one of us at Winona Health expresses our devotion to you, the people we serve, through our Values. The Winona Health values of Integrity, Compassion, Family, Spirituality, Excellence, People, Environment and Communication include specific service standards and expectations that we must all meet. These standards and expectations are integrated throughout our organization and are commitments we make to everyone who seeks services throughout Winona Health.

Improving health and well-being is another demonstrable challenge we have committed to through our mission statement. While this challenge may seem a bit daunting, Winona Health is an organization up to the task. Winona Health is a remarkable healthcare organization living through a sea of nation-wide healthcare changes and challenges. Our Four Cornerstones anchor us to the foundation upon which we align our goals, strategies, actions and resources. They provide clarity in setting priorities and have proven constant over time. These cornerstones are: Our People, Care and Service, Collaboration and Financial Stewardship. Physician recruitment, the building project, service excellence, pursuit of the Malcolm Baldrige Quality criteria, participation in the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) quality project, our new Foundation Board, and retention and recruitment of our excellent staff are all strategies aligned with our cornerstones. They demonstrate the means by which Winona Health pursues improving the health and well-being of our family, friends and neighbors. Throughout this annual report, you will see glimpses of the remarkable people and outcomes we have achieved in this organization – and I can assure you these glimpses are only the tip of the iceberg. Every day I consider myself blessed to be a part of an organization and a community that has truly extraordinary physicians and staff committed to caring for them. I believe this often gets lost in the “bigger is better” mythology that haunts many smaller communities. But I know I sleep better at night because of the confidence I have in our community’s healthcare providers. 2004 was a year when all the pieces were put into place to offer Winona area residents a wonderful new era in health care.

Thinking about 2004 is a pleasant exercise. It was an exciting year for Winona Health…perhaps the most progressive year in the organization’s 110-year history. It was a year when all the pieces were put into place to offer Winona area residents a wonderful new era in health care. After months of collaborative negotiations with the Winona Clinic, Winona Health in August announced a $32 million building project – a project that will move the Winona Clinic’s operations onto the Winona Health campus. New construction immediately southeast of Community Memorial Hospital will include a Clinic/Medical Office Building, Outpatient Diagnostic Center, a parking ramp and will also renovate a number of hospital facilities. All phases of the project should be completed by March of 2006. Upon completion of the project, Winona Health will have state-of-the-art facilities and technologies to care for the healthcare needs of our community’s residents. Over the years, Winona Health has invested in an extensive array of surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and information services equipment and technology so we can deliver excellent healthcare to those in need of our services. The new and renovated facilities will meet our commitment to move health care in the Winona area to an even higher level. Winona Health’s new Diagnostic Center will house a permanent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine, providing greater access to these tests for community residents. Add to this our digital Radiography and PACS system – which transmits, stores, and retrieves digital medical images for viewing – and you better understand why we believe our new building project will move us into the future of healthcare diagnostic services. Winona Health already is a leader in its seamless community-wide electronic medical record (EMR) – one of the reasons Community Memorial Hospital has

been named a “Most Wired – Small & Rural Hospital” for three consecutive years! Winona’s secure system allows all local healthcare providers to access your EMR. So, if you arrive in the CMH Emergency Department late one evening, the doctors and nurses can review your EMR to learn of recent physician visits and lab test results. As all of us on the board of directors watch the progress being made on these new buildings, it was gratifying to see the completion of one of the first stages of the hospital remodeling: the new heliport, located on CMH’s rooftop. Helicopters from Medlink Air (LaCrosse) and Mayo One (Rochester) both test landed on the new helipad on November 30, and their pilots applauded the rooftop location, which provides a safer landing for them and safer transport for our patients. The collaborative relationships our organization and Winona’s physicians enjoy with tertiary centers such as Gundersen and Mayo is also a comfort. We know that when our residents need the services of specialists at those centers, access is both open and convenient. I can assure you that the Winona Health’s board will continue to foster and expand these collaborative efforts while, at the same time, we recruit the best and brightest healthcare providers to serve our community. Recruitment of new physicians and healthcare providers to the Winona area remains one of our key priorities – and we believe our state-of-theart facilities will help in those recruitment efforts. Yes, for more than a century, Winona Health has been a friend for life to the residents of this area. And the steps taken in 2004 will ensure our residents convenience and the best in facilities, equipment and healthcare providers for years to come. While we are pleased with the developments 2004 has initiated, all of us on the Winona Health board are committed to continuing the progress in the years ahead. That is necessary to meet our pledge to provide exceptional healthcare services to the residents of this area. CMH’s Emergency Department Saves Lives BY ELIZABETH HOUGH

Jon Nienow was 52 years old. He walked three miles a day, lifted weights and was in great shape. But in November of 2003, as he entered Community Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), none of that seemed to matter. He was having a heart attack and he needed help. Enter Community Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department team. Mr. Nienow was assessed, treated, and transported within 38 minutes. “They were angels,” Nienow said of the staff that he believes saved his life that day. “I can’t say enough about the nurses and the doctor who took care of me.” The doctors who treated him at Mayo Clinic told him how lucky he was to get the treatment he did at the CMH ED. “They said that if I hadn’t gotten the excellent, immediate care that I got at CMH, I wouldn’t be here today,” Nienow shared. He sings the praises of Dr. Brett Whyte, who made the diagnosis and was so quick to treat the problem, giving him a clot-busting drug within 13 minutes of his arrival that seized the attack and saved his life. 17,000 PATIENTS SERVED EACH YEAR Though not every trip to the ED is quite as serious, almost no one can escape a visit at some point. There will inevitably be an ear infection at 2:00 a.m. or a broken bone that needs immediate attention. And

life-threatening situations don’t wait for office hours. So we turn to the people we know will have their light on for us – the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Community Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department. They are prepared for whatever crisis may enter their doors. “We had 17,206 visits to the ER in Jon Nienow, happy and healthy one 2004,” says Bev Speltz, manager of the year after his trip Emergency Department and Certified to CMH’s ED. Emergency Nurse. And whether it is a heart attack or an ear infection, the patients who enter the ED are often scared and uncertain. They are looking for friendly and familiar faces that will calm, soothe and heal. Bev, who has been a nurse for almost 15 years, understands this. She worked as an ED nurse for eight years before taking over as manager. She proudly leads her team of nurses, doctors and secretaries in serving patients with skilled compassion. That’s exactly what Edith and Byrle Tschumper were looking for when they entered the ED on a recent Wednesday morning. They weren’t sure which doctor or nurse they would see, but they were sure of the kind of care they would receive. It was not their first visit to

CMH’s Emergency Department, and they smiled as they remembered previous visits. “Our care has always been very good,” noted Edith, who happened to be the patient this time. “We think a lot of our hospital here.” As her husband stands at her bedside, he is thankful for the time and attention that has always been given to them in the ED. “Everyone always explains things so well,” says Byrle. “The doctors are so helpful. And the nurses, they are just wonderful.” ED NURSES PROVIDE CALM, COMFORTING CARE Nurses are most often the first faces seen upon entering CMH’s ED. They quickly and efficiently assess the patient’s situation with a calm confidence that reassures even the most frightened patient. Their skill and dedication are evident in the treatment they provide. “We have a team in place that is truly devoted to serving our mission of improving the health and well being of our family, friends, and

definitely noticed the benefits of a small town hospital. “People here have a sense of community,” Erika noted. “They really are caring for their neighbors.” She understands that people want reassurance when they come here and they want to know they will receive the best care possible from well-trained professionals. “Patients want to know that we are going to take care of them, that they will be okay.”

We have a team in place that is truly devoted to serving our mission of improving the health and well being of our family, friends and neighbors. Though the nursing team does not do it alone, their smiles of reassurance and their gentle kindness – along with their skill and dedication – greatly contribute to each patient’s healing.

neighbors,” says Speltz. Community Memorial Hospital employs 18 fulltime Registered Nurses in their Emergency Department, with nine more on call. They range from brand new recruits right out of nursing school to veteran nurses who have been with the hospital for nearly 30 years. They each joined the Emergency team for a variety of reasons, but the common goal is to provide skilled, quality care for the patients who enter their department. Sheryl Klug has been a CMH nurse for almost 25 years, the last eight of them in the ED. “I came to the ED in search of a new challenge. And I love the variety of people we care for,” she said. Sheryl credits the success of CMH’s Emergency Department to a true team effort. The nurses, the doctors, the support staff, as well as other hospital departments, all contribute to ED patients’ well-being. Erika Ping is one of the newest members of the Emergency team. She relocated to Winona after working in a larger facility in the Twin Cities area. A graduate of the UW-Eau Claire nursing program, she has been working in the field for two years. In joining the Winona Health team, she

ED DOCTORS: CAPABLE AND COMPASSIONATE After the initial assessment by the nurse, ED patients are seen by a physician. Winona Health employs five full-time physicians in CMH’s Emergency Department. Each has a diverse background and their own specialty, yet they are united in providing the community with quality, topnotch emergency care. (See sidebar on the following page.) This physician team includes Dr. Terry Donnal, a former physician with the U.S. Air Force who works with local allergy patients when he’s not in the ED. Or patients may be treated by Dr. Marc Dummit, president of the Winona County Medical Society, who takes great pride in the tree house he built for his family. Dr. Chris Schubert brings a pediatric background to his work, and Dr. Brett Whyte is Winona Area Ambulance Service’s Medical Director. Dr. Carlos Morales, a native of Puerto Rico and a Mayo graduate in Internal Medicine, has taken his medical expertise around the world and is rarely without a smile.

CMH’s Emergency Department Doctors DR. TERRY DONNAL is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) and completed his residency at Wheeling Hospital Family Practice in Wheeling, West Virginia. He is a board-certified Family Practice physician with extensive training in Emergency Medicine, Allergies, and Sports/Wilderness Medicine. “I hope to provide outstanding emergency care and enrich my community through involvement,” Dr. Donnal stated. DR. MARC DUMMIT received his degree in Emergency Medicine from UCLA Medical School in Los Angeles, CA, where he also completed his residency. He joined Winona Health’s Emergency team in April, 1997. Dr. Dummit is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is President of the Winona County Medical Society. A father of two boys, he lists “building my boys’ treehouse” as one of his most meaningful accomplishments. DR. CARLOS MORALES, boardcertified in Internal Medicine from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, received his medical degree from the University Central Del Caribe in Puerto Rico. He joined the Winona Health Emergency team in May, 2002. Dr. Morales is a member of the American and Minnesota Medical Associations. He has traveled to Cuba for information exchanges on Emergency Medicine. He enjoys motorcycles, scuba diving and spending time with his family. DR. BRETT WHYTE came to Winona Health in January of 2001, after receiving his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School and completing his residency at St. Luke’s Memorial Clinic in Bend, OR. He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Family Practice and serves as the Medical Director of the Winona Area Ambulance Service. He enjoys cycling and triathlons. DR. CHRIS SCHUBERT joined the Winona Health Emergency team in February, 2003. He received his medical degree from the Bowan Grey School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and completed his residency at the University of Florida Shands Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Schubert volunteers twice a week at his son’s elementary school and also belongs to a Triathlon Club.

COMPETENT, CUTTING EDGE SUPPORT STAFF AND TECHNOLOGIES Most patients are familiar with doctors’ and nurses’ hands-on involvement in emergency medicine. But what people may not realize is the work that goes on behind the scenes: ED secretaries order X-rays and lab work and enter information on patient charts. They also serve as unit dispatchers, communicating with incoming ambulances and reporting the news to the physicians. Stacy Fredrickson has been a Secretary/Dispatcher in the CMH Emergency Department for about three years. “We do whatever needs to be done,” she said of her duties. “Whatever the doctors and nurses need, we are there for them.” CMH also has adopted numerous technological advances to benefit patient care, including linking the community’s healthcare providers via an Electronic Medical Record (EMR). “The EMR is nice, because we have all the [patient] information right there for us,” said Klug. “If a patient

was in the ED three days ago or had seen their physician for something the day before, we can pull it up right away on the EMR.” In addition to the EMR, the newest advancement for the Emergency Department is the heliport located on CMH’s rooftop. Previously, helicopters landed on the ground adjacent to the ER. Relocating it to the rooftop provides easier access for the pilot and more efficient care for the patient. “Patients spend less time exposed to the elements,” explained Speltz. “And we eliminate the safety risk of having the public on the ground when a helicopter lands.” The heliport opened on November 30, with test landings by Mayo One and Medlink Air pilots. Both commented on Winona Health’s “state of the art” heliport and its patient care benefits. While no one looks forward to an ED visit, Winona Health’s competent, qualified medical experts and state-of-the-art technologies ensure patients are treated promptly, expertly with great comfort and care. If you ask Jon Nienow, who has fully recovered from his heart attack, the CMH emergency team far exceeds that goal. “Dr. Whyte and those nurses saved me,” he said. “When they say a friend for life, they aren’t kidding!”

Winona Health Builds for the Community’s Healthcare Future “This is a very important day in our history and a great project for our community,” stated Gary Evans, chairman of the Winona Health Board of Directors. He is referring to a collaborative building project being undertaken by Winona Health and Winona Clinic that includes: ~ A Clinic/Medical Office Building ~ Outpatient Diagnostic Center ~ A new and remodeled Surgical Suite area ~ A three-story Parking Ramp Winona Health will undertake the approximately $32 million project. Winona Clinic then will purchase about 52,000 square feet of the Clinic/Medical Office Building, built adjacent to the hospital facing Hwy. 61. “Our physicians and staff are excited to be moving into new offices so convenient to Community Memorial Hospital,” said Jerry Knuesel, Winona Clinic Administrator. “They know this will result in greater efficiencies and services to their clinic and hospital patients.” A WIN-WIN-WIN PROJECT “All of us involved in this project believe it’s a ‘Win-Win-Win’ situation,” noted Rachelle Schultz, Winona Health President/CEO.

“While Winona Health and Winona Clinic and our staffs will benefit from new space and state-of-the-art equipment, we are most excited by the long-term benefits to those seeking healthcare in Winona. “The hospital will have a new Surgical area, with four new operating rooms and a remodeled operating room dedicated to performing Caesarean Sections,” Schultz explained “In addition, those needing outpatient diagnostic or surgical services will have be able to register and receive needed lab and radiology services in one convenient location designed with comfortable waiting areas.” Added Dr. Dennis Nolan, Winona Clinic board chair, “These new, state-of-the-art healthcare facilities will enhance our ability to recruit new physicians – from internists and family practitioners to physician specialists. Attracting new doctors to the community will benefit all of us who live and work here.” BUILDING PROJECT COMPONENTS The project will be constructed in three parts, with the 280-space parking ramp scheduled for completion in March, 2005. The Clinic/Medical Office Building will be finished about March of 2006. Winona Clinic will own half the first floor and the entire second floor, which will be connected to the hospital. The

third floor will be available for independent physicians and other healthcare providers. Winona Health’s Outpatient Diagnostic Center and hospital renovation, scheduled for completion in March of 2006, will include: • A new surgical suite with four operating rooms, one procedure room, and one designated endoscopy suite • Remodeling the existing surgery area to accommodate 18 recovery bays, a waiting room, and one operating room designated for C-sections • A new outpatient area, including registration, pharmacy, blood draw, mammography, and radiology services • A fixed MRI machine • Relocation of the helipad to the hospital roof Winona Health staff looks at MayoOne after it completed its inaugural landing on Winona Health’s new rooftop heliport.

NEW HELIPORT ALREADY SERVING PATIENTS On Tuesday, November 30, Winona Health was pleased to announce the completion of one of the first stages of the hospital remodeling – its new heliport. Located on the hospital’s roof, the heliport provides air transport services a safer approach and results in less patient time outdoors. “The new heliport protects the safety of the patients, crew and the public,” stated Sara Gabrick, Winona Health patient care administrator. “It keeps the patients indoors longer; it’s clear for the helicopters to land; it keeps debris from flying up.” Added Rand Gettler, Winona Health COO, “The heliport features are cutting edge. A lot of planning went into making this heliport, and many people feel that adding this rooftop helipad puts us in the big leagues.” Flad and Associates (Madison, WI) are the architects on this project. Kraus Anderson (Minneapolis) are the general contractors, working closely with Schwab Co. (Winona) and other local contractors.

Winona Health Physician Clinics Growing to Meet Community Needs BY AMANDA ATLAS

ALLERGY & ASTHMA CLINIC OPENS The sniffles, sneezes and headaches that come with allergy and asthma season are hard to ignore. Relief from the agony of allergies and asthma now can be found at Winona Health’s newest physician clinic – the Allergy & Asthma Clinic. Located on the second floor of Community Memorial Hospital, the clinic is staffed by Dr. Terry Donnal, who offers a multitude of treatments for allergy and asthma sufferers, including: ~ Allergy and asthma evaluations and management ~ Asthma education program ~ Allergy skin testing ~ Medication instruction and management ~ Immunotherapy and allergy shots Dr. Donnal, a board-certified Family Practice physician, was Chief of Allergy and Immunizations for three years in the United States Air Force before joining Winona Health in 2003. “While [with the Air Force], I provided allergy services, including skin testing and allergy shots for people of all ages. I customdesigned allergy treatment plans for each patient to care for their allergies and asthma,” Dr. Donnal said. “I look forward to working with Winona area residents in understanding and treating their allergies and asthma,” he concluded. RUSHFORD CLINIC WELCOMES NEW PHYSICIAN Rushford Clinic is pleased to announce the addition of another Family Practice physician: Dr. Marc Molis. “I want Rushford and Rushford’s neighbors to feel comfortable coming to Rushford Clinic for their care,” stated Dr. Molis. “I enjoy working with people of all ages, especially children, as I have a strong background in pediatrics.” Dr. Molis graduated from Northwestern University Medical School and interned at Children’s Memorial Hospital/ Northwestern in Chicago. He completed his Family Practice residency at Hinsdale Hospital in Illinois. Dr. Molis joins two other physicians at Rushford Clinic: Dr. Robert Breitenbach, a General and Family Medicine physician, and Dr. Carmen Scudiero, an Internal Medicine physician. Linda Runstrom serves the Rushford community as a Nurse Practitioner. The clinic has expanded evening hours on Mondays and Wednesdays and Saturday morning hours to better meet community needs. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES OFFERS FULL SPECTRUM CARE Winona Health Mental Health Services is designed to meet the community’s mental and behavioral health needs. Offering both inpatient and outpatient care, the staff brings key expertise in evaluating and treating mental health issues, including: ~ Child/adolescent counseling ~ Medication management ~ Marriage/family therapy ~ Mental health and psychiatric counseling ~ Psychiatric evaluations Dr. Cullen Schwemer, psychiatrist and Medical Director for WHMHS, is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. From the Winona Health Foundation Chair The Winona Health Foundation has been busy this year, recruiting and installing a new Board of Directors to carry out the Foundation’s mission to support Winona Health. As Foundation board members, we are responsible for foundation oversight, its policies and procedures, and generating stewardship opportunities to benefit Winona Health. Wishes do come true – just ask Erin Latten, a registered nurse at Lake Winona Manor. Latten lost an eye to cancer 20 years ago and, after many reconstructive surgeries, learned that only a prosthetic device would be able to restore what she had lost. The cost of that device was beyond her means.

Karen Andresen, whose mother-in-law is a Lake Winona Manor resident, had great respect for Latten and her work. Andresen decided to write a letter. The letter was sent to CBS News' "The Early Show's Week of Wishes" series. It was immediately chosen to be part of their program. Latten, along with Andresen, appeared live on the show where Erin was shocked to learn of the surprise. She received the prosthesis in September, just in time to walk down the aisle in her youngest brother's wedding. "I believe in miracles now," says Latten. "This was a miracle. I don't deserve it, but I am very grateful."

Each September, Watkins Manor staff plans a special Garden Party -- a day when residents and their loved ones enjoy socializing, refreshments, and the Watkins Manor’s garden. Watkins Manor held its Fourth Annual Garden Party on September 12 this year. Family and community members gathered to celebrate the residents of Watkins Manor. “It is a beautiful day that the residents share with their families,” said Sara Blair, Watkins Manor social worker.

Watkins residents tend the garden, which is landscaped to portray the original Watkins family garden. Throughout the gardening season, the residents plant annuals, perennials and vegetables. As the flowers bloom and the vegetables ripen, the residents bring the harvest indoors for all to share. While residents and their children gathered at the picnic tables and benches in the garden, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren took advantage of the putting green and play area. Young and old alike tossed coins into the fountain, wishing for another joy-filled year in the beautiful Watkins Manor garden.

On March 26, 1894, about 50 Winona women gathered at the home of Mrs. Hannibal Choate Sr. to discuss forming a new organization – a ladies hospital aid association to work with the monthold Winona General Hospital. That organization is going strong 110 years later and is now known as the Winona Health Auxiliary. The current Auxiliary is 300 members strong and provides a wealth of services to the patients and residents served by Winona Health – from delivering mail to greeting visitors, providing healthcare directives training, calling homebound community members, and more. In addition to donating hours of volunteer time to Winona Health, the Auxiliary raises funds for needed hospital equipment and nursing scholarships.

The Winona Health Auxiliary is a separate entity working to support the good work of Winona Health through a variety of activities and events. In addition, the Auxiliary receives gifts to celebrate Happy Occasions and to Memorialize loved ones. The names listed reflect gifts made between October 1, 2003 and September 30, 2004 to the Winona Health Auxiliary’s Happy Occasion and Remembrance Funds.

The Ben & Adith Miller Classic reached new heights in 2004, raising $125,0000 for the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund. This year’s event featured twotime RE/Max World Long Drive Champion, Sean Fister. Both Youth and Main Event participants were able to take advantage of Fister’s long-drive skills, using one of his drives during the tournaments. While the Classic means lots of fun for all participants, the reason for the event is serious business – raising money for the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund.

The Patient Care Fund provides financial support for individuals in the community and improves the hospital’s ability to serve the community of Winona. Through use of this fund, Winona Health’s Community Memorial Hospital is able to offer needed assistance to our family, friends and neighbors experiencing unforeseen or extensive medical expenses. In this past year, the need for Patient Care Fund assistance nearly doubled. Potential recipients work one-onone with a Winona Health representative to determine eligibility. This process results in recipients being able to fulfill their obligations to Winona Health while maintaining their dignity. A special “thank you” is extended to all of the title sponsors, Youth Tournament sponsor, Pro sponsor, hole sponsors, and volunteers who helped make the 2004 Ben & Adith Miller Golf Classic a tremendous success!

Capital Campaign Report Winona Health wrapped up the Caring Today ... Preparing for Tomorrow Capital Campaign and sends its thanks to the many donors who made this campaign a success. (1) Mark McGrory, Greg Evans and Rod Nelson of Merchants Bank with Rachelle Schultz in the Family Lounge in the Lake View Court addition of Lake Winona Manor. (2) Mark Jacobs of Watkins, Inc. and Watkins Online and Rachelle Schultz outside one of the Birthing Suites in the Family Birth Center. (3) Fred and Dianne Morgan, Lucille Thern Messman, Chris Baudhuin with Rachelle Schultz in front of the first floor lounge of Watkins Manor. Thern, Inc. issued a $50,000 challenge grant in the name of Royal G. Thern, the company’s founder. (4) Barb and Steve Slaggie with Rachelle Schultz in the Dialysis Center, which allows Winona Health to serve 65 dialysis patients a year with eight dialysis chairs. Cornwell; a gift made in honor of Fastenal Employees; and the Family Birth Center Nurses Station and Nursery were made possible with a gift from Pat and Dan Rukavina and Muriel and Dave Arnold. In addition, Watkins Manor residents enjoy a new Beauty Salon made possible by a gift from Dr. M.L. (Max) DeBolt in memory of his wife, Jean.

Diane Noeske was to have spent this early fall evening enjoying the play Annie with her friends. But cancer had other plans. Instead, Diane was spending her final days at Lake Winona Manor. “LWM has a special Make a Wish program for residents who are at an end-of-life experience,” explained Mary Miller-Hyland, LWM administrator. Enter Patti Volkman, director of nursing; Holli Wieser, therapeautic recreation manager; and LWM's management team. Holli rented the CD of Annie and Patti organized a party, inviting Diane's friends to come to LWM to watch Annie with her. Patti also called people in the community who had played Annie in local productions. “By the night of the party, four actresses had offered to perform a private show for Diane and her friends. I was overwhelmed,” Volkman said. With wine, a cheese tray and a costumed Tess Polachek performing as Annie, Diane and her friends enjoyed a final Girls Night Out. “Diane opened her eyes and smiled at Annie as she sang The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow,” Volkman remembered. “Her friends put wine on her lips. As she licked them, they were all in tears at such a touching experience.” Two nights later, Diane passed away. “Not a day goes by that I don't remember what Patti did for my mother,” Mandy Noeske, Diane's daughter, said. Added Miller-Hyland, “What a wonderful gift Patti and LWM staff gave to Diane and those who loved her.”
