5.What were the primary findings of the research? Annotated In this article, Michael Katz, discusses why heBibliography believes U.S. cities aren't burned due to protests Worksheet and riots, as this action happened quite frequently prior to the 1970's. He believes one reason is

that there are a set of mechanisms that work with the new ecology of urban power. These

The threat of deportation and unemployment have shown to be an effective mechanism of social control because it lowers the potential for violent civil actions and promotes peaceful protest. The United States has limited civil violence by facilitating the incorporation of immigrants. 2.What is the primary research question or thesis of this article? What accounts for the absence of civil violence on American streets? The author wants to

know why so much urban violence occurred prior to the 1970's but does not occur nearly as much today.

The method used for this research project suited it well. The researcher was able to make the primary purpose of the research very clear as well as the primary findings. It was an interesting article that brought an idea to my attention that I probably would have never thought about on my own.

4.What research method(s) was employed by the researchers? Was this appropriate for the population and the research question? Were there limitations to this method?

For this study, the researcher used grounded theory approach. I fell that this particular method was appropriate for the population because grounded theory is an inductive approach to the study of social life. It creates theories through constant comparing of observations. It analyzes patterns, themes, and common categories discovered in the observed data. Grounded theory tries to combine a naturalist approach with a positivist concern for a "systematic set of procedures" in qualitative research. (Babbie, p.324). There are guidelines to grounded theory but I don't feel as if they hindered or took away from the results of the research.
