Using your notebook materials, write the name of the explorer beside the description of his achievements. You will only use each explorer’s name once.

________________________________ 1. I explored for both the Dutch and the English. I enjoyed happy times sailing in the New World on my ship, the Half-Moon, but once on my ship, the Discovery, my crew and I spent a long winter surrounded in ice. There is a river in the English colony of New York named for me and a bay in Canada named after me as well. ________________________________ 2. I was a Portuguese sailor who was the 1st person to realize that the new lands Columbus found was not part of Asia, but a new continent. My sketches of the South American coast were the first to be drawn by map makers, who put my name on the two new continents. ________________________________ 3. I was an Italian navigator who had to wait seven long years before the King and Queen of Spain gave me money, ships and supplies to make a journey west to find the Indies. I made four voyages in all, but never found Asia even though I thought I did. ________________________________ 4. I was an Italian living in England when the king announced his desire for someone to find the Northwest Passage, an allwater route to Asia across North America. My crew and I sailed west and landed in what we thought was China but was in was Newfoundland, Canada. I disappeared on my 2nd voyage. _________________________________ 5. I was a Spanish conquistador who landed in Mexico in 1519. My men and I managed to defeat and control the mighty Aztec empire. Our superior weapons helped, but it was our germs that weakened the native people the most. __________________________________ 6. I am a Frenchman that some people call the “Father of New France” because I helped establish the great city of Quebec. There is a lake between New York and Vermont named for me. I saw that lake myself while on an Indian raid. I spent time in a British prison after Canada fell under the control of England. __________________________________ 7. I am also a Frenchman who played an important role in the exploration of Canada. I was the first European to sail down the St Lawrence River. I set up a settlement in what is now Montreal. I thought I found gold, but it was something that only looked like it.

___________________________________ 8. I was a Spanish explorer who landed on the eastern coast of Panama in 1513. My men and I cut our way through the thick forests and emerged on the west coast. It is said that I plunged my sword into the surf and claimed the vast body of water for the King of Spain. ____________________________________ 9. I was a Spanish conquistador who traveled along the western coast of South America in search of gold. I was told that a mighty empire rich in the metal was located in the mountains of Peru. My men and I managed to trick the Incan ruler to give us all the gold and we defeated them, claiming the land for our king. _____________________________________ 10. I was a Portuguese sailor who spent several years traveling the oceans. We crossed the Atlantic fairly easily but had a very hard time rounding Cape Horn, the tip of South America. Once we entered the Pacific Ocean we were happy to find the waters peaceful and calm. We landed in the Philippines and got involved in tribal war. Unfortunately, I did not make it out alive, but one of my ships made it back to Europe in 1522.
