What is AVID?

What does AVID stand for?

AVID: A dvancement V ia I ndividual D etermination AVID is a national program and curriculum designed to support students in a challenging college preparatory course of study. Created in 1980 by a single classroom teacher in San Diego, CA.: Mary Catherine Swanson.

The AVID Curriculum The AVID Elective class features: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading, Notetaking, and Study Skills AVID activities include a focus on college, career, citizenship, leadership and motivation Students travel throughout the year to visit area colleges and universities

The AVID Curriculum The elective class features tutoring twice a week in all subjects, led by college students. AVID students are expected to enroll in at least one Honors/Pre AP course each semester AVID students maintain an AVID binder and take notes in all their subject area classes

An AVID nominee should: Currently be an average student making mostly B’s and C’s in REGULAR courses Potential to be a successful in honors and Pre-AP courses with AVID SUPPORT (extra time, tutoring and AVID elective) Show the ability or tendency to be SELF-MOTIVATED Have APPROPRIATE classroom behavior

An AVID nominee should: Have GOOD attendance (fewer than 5 absences/semester) Show the desire to WORK HARD and prepare themselves for high school graduation Express an INTEREST and WILLINGNESS to work to be admitted to college

One or more of the following should apply to the student: First in the family to attend college Low income/ economically disadvantaged Underserved ethnicity in four-year colleges Other special circumstances

If you are unsure of student circumstances…that’s okay!!

Once nominated… A student’s grades and behavior/attendance reports are compiled in preparation for their interview. Then each nominee is interviewed.

Please carefully consider these issues before recommending that the committee initiates this process for a student.

If you see a potentially successful match, DEFINITELY nominate the student!
