West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Uh, Mrs. West, you're in the back seat and, and can you identify yourself?
West, (Mrs.)
My name is Sheila west, I'm Dave's mom.
Jones
And you approve of this taped statement?
West (Mrs.)
Yes, I do.
Jones
Okay. At this time uh, I'm taking this taped statement in reference to the events on August 20th, 2008, that occurred during the PRP football practice. Ple...(coughs). I'm sorry. Please describe the events of August 20th, 2008 from the beginning to the end of practice.
West
Uh, at the beginning of practice we started out watchin' films and liftin' weights and then we come over here to the practice field and we stretched and we warmed up and we did team take-off. And then we got, I believe we got water right after that. Then we did individuals and then we got water again. And then we did like...I don't remember if we did seven on seven that day or not. I'm pretty sure we did, then we got water after that, and came back. And uh, after we got water after that time uh, a bunch of people were slackin', like they was not hustlin' so Coach got mad at us so we had to go run uh, sprints.
Jones
Okay.
West
And...
Jones
Okay. So it's safe to say uh, what you just told
Page 3 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
me, that your training consisted of running drills, uh, would that be considered contact, full contact? West
Uh, no.
Jones
(Inaudible).
West
No contact.
Jones
Okay. But running over plays and, and offensive/defensive plays...
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
And uh, as any team will…to prepare themselves for a game. Correct?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Okay. Uh, and you stated that while doing this uh, your, the team was allowed to uh, take breaks and such?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Okay. And uh, what's your position on the team?
West
I'm quarterback.
Jones
You're quarterback? Okay.
West
Yes.
Jones
And uh, let me get in to some questions here. Uh, how are water breaks given? Individually or as a team?
Page 4 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
West
Uh, mostly as a team. Sometimes we'll do like just each position, like running backs and receivers and stuff, go at different times, but like the whole team gets 'em in general at the same time.
Jones
Mostly as a team and then uh, the team in general, meaning the entire team?
West
Uh, yeah, like certain groups will go over, but everybody like right back to back.
Jones
Okay. Would it safe...okay, your question...your answer will be mostly as a team, in groups, and sometimes as a, as a whole team in general?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
okay. Okay...Now you're referring to groups, uh, is it to my understanding that uh, the team is broke down in different groups and, and categories?
West
By positions you play.
Jones
By positions? Okay.
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
So mostly as a team, groups, and as a whole team, as the whole team. On August 20th, 2008, how many water breaks did you take?
West
Uh, about three or four. I'm not real 100% sure.
Page 5 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
Jones
After the last water break, what, what did the practice consist of?
West
Running.
Jones
And is running considered the same thing as gassers or sprints?
West
Yeah. Yes, sir.
Jones
Okay. Okay, so it's safe to say I'm gonna write down running gassers?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Okay. That, that would be the proper term for it?
West
Um-hmm.
Jones
And why was the team running sprints?
West
Because a whole group of people was just walkin' to their places instead of hustlin'.
Jones
Now you refer to whole group, would that be the whole offense or defense or just...
West
...uh, make sure the defense, or make sure the offensive line and some running backs.
Jones
Okay. Uh, so the answer will be players from offense and defense, and what were they doing?
West
They was walkin' instead o' hustlin'.
Jones
Okay.
So the que...the answer will be the
Page 6 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
offensive and defensive players were not hustling? West
Yes, sir.
Jones
How many sprints did you run in your group?
West
Uh, I'm not sure, I didn't count. I'd say I ran about 20 maybe, 'cause me and Antonio got out because we was hustlin' and everybody else started runnin'. He called us out early for hustlin'...
Jones
...So you, so you ran 20?
West
Yes, sir. Pro'bly around about that.
Jones
And what group were you in?
West
I was in the backs...the running backs and receivers and all the little guys. The skills guys.
Jones
Running backs, receivers?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
That's referred to as skill guys...skill persons. Skill group. How many sprints did you run before taking off gear?
West
Uhm, uh...I'm guessin' about eight, maybe.
Jones
And after taking...how many did you run after taking off your gear...consis...consisting of a helmet or shoulder pads?
West
Uh, I'm not really sure.
Page 7 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
Jones
How long do you think the team was running sprints?
West
About 20, 25 minutes.
Jones
Where do, uh, I'm sorry...did you or any of your teammates ask for water breaks or try to get water during the running of sprints?
West
I didn't and I didn't hear nobody ask.
Jones
Be safe to say no?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Not that you know of.
West
Not that I know of.
Jones
Okay. I didn’t see... No. Okay. Did any of your teammates become ill during the running of sprints?
West
Uh, yeah. Antonio, he did, well, he was breathin' real heavy.
Jones
Antonio...last name?
West
...Calloway.
Jones
Calloway?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
And who else?
West
Uh, Max Gilpin.
Page 8 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
Jones
And when did An...Antonio become ill?
West
Uh, right before he called me and him out to, for hustlin'. He started breathin' real heavy.
Jones
Is this during the sprints or after the sprints?
West
It was right, yeah, it was during his last gasser we were in.
Jones
So Antonio became ill during his last gasser.
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
And when did Max become ill?
West
Uh, I'm not sure. I wasn't paying attention. I was helping Antonio.
Jones
And what Antonio had was just uh, was it breathing?
West
He was breathing ex...extremely heavy.
Jones
Couldn't catch his breath?
West
No.
Jones
Okay. During the practice, during any of the practices this year, have you personally seen or heard of any teammates being injured or quitting the team?
West
Uh, uh...not that I know of. Let, yeah, during that, that practice on the 20th, two kids quit.
Jones
On August 20th two players quit?
Page 9 of 9 Statement: David West / Case #08197(i) September 10, 2008
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
And do you recall those players?
West
Uh, David Englert and Chris Bryant.
Jones
Anyone else?
West
Uh, that's all that I recall.
Jones
Okay. Has anyone influenced you in any way to withhold information or change any of the facts that actually occurred during the practice?
West
No, sir.
Jones
Is this statement truthful?
West
Yes, sir.
Jones
Do you have anything else to add?
West
No, sir.
Jones
Okay. We will go off tape at this time. The time now is 1553 hours.
