WEEKLY JOURNALS This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Week Three - Research
RESEARCH What did you learn from your research?
Since last time I have learnt how to do split screen, correctly convey tropes, glitch edit and intro cut outs. I have also learnt about what techniques professionals have used.
How has the research into your target audience helped you improve your ideas?
I have improved my idea by going through what my target audience has said and extrapolating the idea of multiple characters, some sort of romance, a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously but can cover serious topics, an established fact of it being a British series which means it has very blunt comedy and sexual comedy, strong character traits that are stuck too. People have said to use fixed characters that stick to archetypes, that the characters should contradict each other in both looks and personalities and that the set should look a certain way due to the premise.
How has the research into your platform helped you improve your ideas?
My research into the platform has helped because it has shown me more people would view it on YouTube even though the copyright systems are slightly off for uploading things such as student films and show pilots.
How has researching characters and actors helped you decide who to cast?
I have started to write for a cast I have in mind. I have also started my auditions. I have gone for a cast with a distinct visual look, two females and three males and each cast member has a very distinct look which works for their characters.
What have you learned from your test shoots? How will you use these ideas in your production?
I have learnt how to do a split screen, how tropes for characters can be conveyed, how to edit glitches and create intro cut outs. I also looked into how to shoot a sitcom using only one camera.
What work do you need to complete outside of lessons to stay on track?
I still need to finish off the infographics, do problem solving and do Josie and Oscar’s auditions and start the production schedule.
High Grade Tips Research ● ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information ● ‘relevant & coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media product you hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning ● ‘sustained’ – continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and don’t just limit it to the first two weeks ● ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections
