WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN BALOCHISTAN: Balochistan is a water scarce province of Pakistan and is known as the 'fruit basket' of Pakistan because of production high quality fruit, which is the major source of income especially in the uplands of the province. Agriculture and livestock rearing have been the main source of income for majority of the population. It is spatially the largest province of Pakistan whereas population wise, the smallest with only 7.5 million people residing there. Rainfall in this region is highly variable thus requiring irrigation necessary for agriculture. The rainfall is just suitable for natural vegetation and land growth which provides pastures for livestock grazing. The water resources of the province consist of ground water and surface water. These can not be considered dependable sources for water . Some local alternative methods of irrigation are being used to overcome this problem. One of them is the Karez system. Karezs are developed to use groundwater for irrigation system. The other methods include the Dug /Open Wells , Tube Wells, and Spate which is like the Sailaba system.
