OVERPRODUCTION Producing items earlier or in greater quantities than needed by the customer. Inventory can be physical inventory or a queue of information.

WAITING (Time on Hand) Workers serving as watch persons for an automated machine or having to stand around waiting for the next process step, tool, supply, part, etc., or no work because of delays. TRANSPORTATION Moving WIP from place to place in a process even if a short distance. Moving parts into and out of storage between processes.

OVERPROCESSING / INCORRECT PROCESSING Taking unneeded steps to process parts. Inefficient processing causing unnecessary motion and producing defects. Producing higher quality part than necessary.

EXCESS INVENTORY Excess raw material, WIP, or finished goods causing longer lead times, damaged goods, transportation and storage costs and delays.

UNNECESSARY MOVEMENT Motions that do not add value to the production of the part such as reaching, looking for, stacking parts, walking.

DEFECTS Production of defective parts or correction. Repair, rework, scrap replacement.

UNUSED EMPLOYEE CREATIVITY Losing time, ideas, skills, improvements and learning opportunities by not engaging or listening to your employees.
